Winner of the American Mystery Award for Best Novel of Romantic Suspense, and the Romantic Times Award for Best Historical Mystery

Miss Irene Adler, the beautiful American opera singer who once outwitted Sherlock Holmes, is also a superb detective, as Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker can attest. Even Holmes himself must admit--albeit grudgingly--that she acquits herself competently.

But in matters of the heart she encounters difficulty. The Crown Prince of Bohemia--tall, blonde, and handsome--proves to be a cad. Will dashing barrister Godfrey Norton be able to convince Irene that not all handsome men are cut from the same broadcloth?

Review

“Enchanting... remarkable... keen... saucy... delicious... irresistible...” ―The New York Times on Good Night, Mr. Holmes

“The game is afoot in this splendid addition to the Sherlock Holmes canon. That superior woman, Irene Adler, takes center stage in her own version of 'A Scandal in Bohemia', giving a delightfully convincing feminine slant to the events previously chronicled by Dr. Watson.” ―Sharyn McCrumb on Good Night, Mr. Holmes

“Setting herself the task of creating a heroine worthy of Sherlock Holmes, Douglas succeeds smashingly. Narrated with credible Victorian style and sensibility by Penelope 'Nell' Huexleigh, this lively caper establishes Adler's sleuthing skills... A truly original perspective of the one whom the great detective himself dubbed 'the woman.' She's a superior woman at that: readers will doff their deerstalkers.” ―
Publishers Weekly on Good Night, Mr. Holmes

USA Today Bestselling writer Carole Nelson Douglas is the author of nearly 70 novels and numerous short stories, including the Irene Adler Victorian mystery series and the Midnight Louie cozy noir mystery series. She was inducted into the Texas Literary Hall of Fame in 2012. Romantic Times Book Reviews has also named her a Pioneer of Publishing. She is a four-time Romance Writers Rita Award finalist and is the winner of Romantic Times Book Reviews Career Achievement awards in Suspense, Mystery, and Versatility. Other awards include the Johnny Cat Litter-ary Award, many Catwriters' Association Muse Medallions, and special recognitions from Malice Domestic. In total, she has been the finalist or winner of as many as 50 awards in multiple genres, including high fantasy, urban fantasy, science fiction, magical realism, mystery, and romance.

A graduate of the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, she was a finalist in Vogue magazine's Prix de Paris writing competition (won earlier by Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis) and earned degrees in English literature, Speech, and Theater, with a minor in philosophy. While working in journalism, she was the first woman elected to the executive board of The Newspaper Guild's Twin Cities local, the first woman show chairman of the local's annual Gridiron Show, and the first permanent woman member of the St. Paul Pioneer Press's Opinion Pages and Editorial Board. She was also the first woman to reinvent the Sherlock Holmes world from a female viewpoint with Good Night, Mr. Holmes, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and winner of American Mystery and Romantic Times magazine awards.

All of Douglas's novels use a mainstream matrix to blend elements of mystery or fantasy with contemporary issues and magical realism. A literary chameleon with an agenda, Douglas has reinvented the roles of women in a variety of fiction forms.

Carole's Irene Adler series features the only woman to outwit Sherlock Holmes, beginning with a re-telling of Arthur Conan Doyle's "A Scandal in Bohemia" from Irene's point of view in GOOD NIGHT, MR. HOLMES. From there, Irene continues to adventure with her husband Godfrey Norton and spinster companion Nell Huxleigh as they go head to head--sometimes competing with, sometimes cooperating with--the great detective Sherlock Holmes himself.

The Midnight Louie mystery series is comprised of 28 books titled in alphabetical order, beginning with CAT IN AN ALPHABET SOUP (formerly titled CATNAP) and features feline detective extraordinaire, Midnight Louie, Esq., and his purrson Temple Barr. Although Midnight Louie has his own very distinct writing voice, he never deigns to actually speak to humans. He has been described as a "Sam Spade with hairballs" and plays a key role in a romantic quadrangle of human characters that spans the length of the series.

The Delilah Street Paranormal Investigator noir urban fantasies feature the alluring amateur detective Delilah Street as she solves mysteries in a world populated with werewolf mobsters and Sliver Screen zombies in Sin City, Las Vegas.

Although Carole unexpectedly passed away in 2021, her estate is working to convert her older fiction into e-book format. Stay tuned.

What a well-written, tantalizing read! Stupendous plot, fascinating characters and fast paced. This tome far surpasses today's cozy, short mysteries.

Always on the lookout for anything Holmes, my eyes went right to a feature article in the current issue of Mystery Scene Magazine entitled "Why Can't TV Get Irene Adler Right?" Writer Carole Nelson Douglas wrote about TVs attempt to capture the true essence of "the woman," the only female in Arthur Canon Doyle's entire Holmes' canon to outsmart the Great Detective. In reading the article, I was reminded of Douglas' debut novel, Good Night, Mr. Holmes, a book I'd always meant to read.

In my quest to find new series mystery writers to add to my list, I ordered the book. What a wonderful surprise! I've read many Holmes parodies and I found Douglas' writing style as authentic as one can get to ACD's. Holmes plays a small role in the story, which was fine because I was quickly hooked into Irene's version of events leading to "A Scandal in Bohemia."

As the story begins, we are introduced to Penelope Huxleigh, a young parson's daughter who finds herself on the street, having just lost her position as a governess. She is rescued from having her only possession, a carpetbag, snatched by a "street Arab." Her savior is Irene Adler, who despite her flamboyant attire and wad of cash in her reticule, is near penniless herself. Irene takes Penelope (Nell) home and the two women, much to Nell's chagrin, join forces against the world. Irene peruses her operatic career, working as an agent of inquiry on the side, and Nell takes typewriting assignments to help ends meet. Soon Irene is the prima donna of the Imperial Opera of Warsaw where she becomes romantically involved with the future King of Bohemia. From here we learn Irene's version of this sordid love affair, which Holmes, although he never guesses, only had partially right. When Nell receives an urgent message from Irene pleading for her to "--come at once to Prague," the story takes off at breakneck speed and doesn't stop until she, her new husband Godfrey Norton, and Nell are safely in Paris. Irene concludes the caper with a toast. "Good Night, Mr. Sherlock Holmes--wherever you are."

Irene Adler shows up in the corpus of Sherlock Holmes' works, in "A Scandal in Bohemia." This book represents that story in a larger context--from the point of view of a close acquaintance of Adler's. And the effect is altogether delightful!

The story is overwritten in its style as is Doyle's body of work--but that is a good thing in this case, as it creates a parallelism between the Holmes works and this book about Adler. In the book the Bohemian scandal is only a small part of a much larger story. "Good Night, Mr. Holmes" is a work from the point of view of Penelope ("Nell") Huxleigh. The story is told from her diaries and writings, relating her experiences over time with Adler.

First, this is a character study. Irene Adler comes across as a very independent woman (the work starts when she is 22), who does not yield to societal norms. She is, in short, her own person. Her vocation is opera; her avocation is investigation. She comes from a modest background, has to hustle for every penny she can earn at the outset. She is clever, wearing costumes (including dressing as a man) to gain information in her investigations. She has a similar deductive skill to Holmes' himself.

Second, there is a mystery--the fate of the diamonds of Marie Antoinette. An American mogul, Tiffany, gives her a retainer to find it (covering his bets, he had also provided Holmes with a retainer!). The novel covers a period of about eight years, and the diamonds remain elusive to Adler over that period of time, although she has clues to work with (she beat Holmes to the clues by moments).

Third, it is a story of the time. We meet James Whistler, Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde, and so on. We get a sense of the times.

Fourth, there is the story of her getting caught in a trap by the Prince (later King) of Bohemia. She solves the murder of the old king, but is caught in a royal trap threatening her future and her honor. Her escape is nicely done.

Finally, it is a romance, as she at first disdains and later collaborates with Godfrey Norton in her pursuit of escape from Bohemia and acquisition of the diamonds.

How these threads come together is done well. And her tweaking of Holmes adds a nice twist to the closing of this novel. I am intrigued enough that I suspect that I will read at least one more of these novels featuring Irene Adler.

The Irene Adler series is about a very clever and independent American actress/singer who lives in London during the 1800's, solves crimes, and is the "mysterious woman" who fascinates the books' minor character... Sherlock Holmes. Well-written, well-paced, and quite an enjoyable read for my tastes. I love all of Carole Nelson's books, from the adventures of Irene Adler to the Midnight Louis series to the rather weird (urban fantasy) Delilah Street series, the Midnight Louis series being my favorite. :-) She writes murder mysteries, and Louis is a black cat who helps solve crimes, so it isn't exactly hard-core. But as much as I love Devon Monk, Faith Hunter, and other urban fantasy writers, I enjoy a good laid-back murder mystery written tongue-in-cheek like the Midnight Louis series as well.

I loved this historical action/mystery. Irene and Nell make a fantastic pair and the writer really captured the language and feel if the original Sherlock stories. I am now reading book 2 and thoroughly enjoying that too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent novel for Holmes fans
Reviewed in France on January 6, 2013
I have read lots of modern Holmes novels, written by others than Arthur Conan Doyle. Some are great, some are not so good and one was frankly awful. (The one where Holmes turns out to be Jack the Ripper!)

This one is excellent. Inventive, with interesting characters, numerous sub-plots to keep things going, and an excellent "fit" to the original Holmes stories. Well recommended.

I read the Kindle version. I think it is important to review also the quality of the Kindle conversion. Some are perfect, others are quite awful. This one was generally good, certainly acceptable. The only faults I found were the occasional mis-spelled work, e.g., a "1" (one) in place of an "l" (ell). Makes you think the book was copied with OCR software. Aside from this very minor inconvenience, the chapter advance function, used by pushing the right side of the square "ring" does not work. I find that very inconvenient, as I often skip around within a book.

All told though, a very enjoyable book in a quite acceptable Kindle version.

P.S. I encourage everyone who reads Kindle versions to evaluate them.

As a big Holmes fan iwas looking forward to this twist on the stories. All the ingredients are there but it just falls flat. Perhaps it's because it automatically invites comparison with sir Arthur Conan Doyle and suffers accordingly
