This massive book offers a comprehensive study of the Gypsy jazz or Manouche guitar style as perceived by French guitarists Derek Sebastian and Romane, two of the finest modern day practitioners of the Django Reinhardt style. The MIDI tracks, which can be accessed via most audio players on PC or Macintosh computers, allow the student to play along with both short phrases and extensive rhythm tracks- at any desired tempo. Includes access to online audio. L'Esprit Manouche not only makes Gypsy jazz accessible; it offers an opportunity to master the Manouche style. While many exercises and tunes appear in both standard notation and tab, not to mention chord or fretboard diagrams, standard notation is predominant.

Gypsy Jazz guitar is an incredible style of music. You’d think that any book which could bring you closer to the work of Django would be a source of great joy. But this one was so annoying- Two problems: if you have a Mac, you have to figure out how you want to convert the stupid MIDI files to MP3. I paid $15 for an app. Life was easier when Mel Bay provided a cd or MP3 downloads. Dealing with MiDI files is taking 2 steps back and a major headache. Second problem: the MIDI files are played on a keyboard! Why the #%*%# would they sell a guitar method songbook with $@&;@ keyboard files??!! SO FRUSTRATING! This is supposed to be a celebration of a very special guitar genre! And they give you generic keyboard audio!!

Recordings by Romane show he and his fellow musicians know their stuff. And it may be that the original book in French is accurate and informative. But the book in English is full of weird translations and confusing sentences. And there are many instances of diagrams misplaced from the paragraphs that discuss them. The transcriptions seem to be accurate, and include tabs, so they are useful for study. But as for the rest, you'd better already know what they're talking about, or you'll be very confused about what they're trying to teach. My advice is look elsewhere. And my advice to publishers in general is to spend a bit more time and money to get good translators and careful proofreaders. This could have been the fiver star book I'd hoped for, but thanks mainly to sloppy production it is only worth three stars at best. Romane, you have been done a dis-service.

A fabulous book for diving into the Gypsy Jazz style and that of Romane in particular. I love his playing so for me this book is a must-have.
The Kindle version is, however, of sub-standard quality. The resolution is not high enough and it is A5 size. I'm using an A4(ish) tablet and the small size and low-quality of the sharps/flats and other various small notations is a real eye-strain. I'll be buying directly from Melbay as their pdfs are full-size and much, much better quality.

A bit early to leave a review as it's only just arrived, but like others here I'm finding it impossible to access the audio files. At £32+ I'd expect better. Have emailed melbay.com and awaiting response. Otherwise it's a return I'm afraid. Not good enough.
Update: got the audio, which I don't really like as it's midi files, but on the plus side, the book does get you playing proper music from the first lesson (though the samples take no prisoners and are way too advanced). It has the edge over Wrembel because it's not just mind-numbing arpeggios - probably best to get both if you can afford it.
A few errors here and there, but there's plenty to get your teeth into here.
