One of BuzzFeed's best YA books of 2021!
Perfect for fans of the Lady Janies and Stalking Jack the Ripper, the first book in the Jane Austen Murder Mysteries trilogy is a clever retelling of Pride and Prejudice that reimagines the iconic settings, characters, and romances in a thrilling and high-stakes whodunit.
When a scandalous murder shocks London high society, seventeen-year-old aspiring lawyer Lizzie Bennet seizes the opportunity to prove herself, despite the interference of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the stern young heir to the prestigious firm Pemberley Associates.
Convinced the authorities have imprisoned the wrong person, Lizzie vows to solve the murder on her own. But as the case—and her feelings for Darcy—become more complicated, Lizzie discovers that her dream job could make her happy, but it might also get her killed.
Three of Jane Austen’s classic novels receive a murder mystery makeover in this romantic and thrilling three-book series that’s perfect for fans of The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy.
Pride and Premeditation is followed by Sense and Second-Degree Murder, in which aspiring scientist Elinor Dashwood and her sister Marianne, a budding detective, work together to solve the mystery of their father’s murder.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2021This book was just so amazing!
Highlights:
- Pride and Prejudice retelling
- enemies-to-lovers
- YA murder mystery
- slightly more modern take on the Regency era
- strong female MC
- “trapped in a closet together” trope
Pride and Prejudice has always been one of my favorite love stories, so when I heard about this book, I just HAD to read it!
This book had much more of a YA feel than the original P&P story. I think part of that has to do with the fact that the characters are younger than in the original story.
One thing I really liked is that Lizzie seems even more headstrong and fiery in this retelling. She speaks her mind more and isn’t afraid to take chances, which I completely admire.
In fact, for most of the book, it was more about Lizzie trying to prove herself and less about her relationship with Darcy. But that relationship did come in at some point and it didn’t disappoint.
One thing I really want to say is I think the author did an amazing job of staying true to the personalities of the characters while still giving this story new life.
Also, the killer was so unexpected! Normally I am able to guess it pretty early on, but not with this book. I loved it!
I definitely recommend this book to P&P fans, mystery fans, and regency fans! And if you love books with strong women proving men wrong, this is the one for you!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2024I enjoyed reading this, but it's hard not to find yourself comparing it to the original story. There's just no one that can compare with Austen.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2022What a charming and delightful read! I loved this book. I'm a big fan of the original Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and this murder mystery is a fun take-off. One of my favorite lines (from p. 153): "...a woman may uncover many secrets before tea."
I loved remembering all the characters from Austen's original and seeing how they fit into this mystery. A few of the characters are new, but the rest you'll recognize. I laughed out loud at how Lady Catherine is depicted. No spoilers here, though.
I especially love how the author takes a bold step forward by giving Lizzie the ambition to want to be a solicitor in her father's law firm. Women in 1813 weren't allowed to do such things! This is Pride and Prejudice with actual business people, detectives, and lawyers solving crimes, instead of wealthy landowners who don't work at all. Hence, it's actually more exciting, especially for today's audience!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2024I simply loved it ☺ I know it's nowhere near historically accurate but it is a great read and it's fun to imagine an even more independent Lizzy. The romantic tension between Darcy and Lizzy was definitely missing something but I was happy to see the rewriting of some characters relationships while other original characters were simply cut all together.
It would have been 5 stars if the witty banter full of double meanings was there, but I get that modernizing the characters language was necessary for the narrative. But truly who is able to do witty conversation like Jane Austen? My expectations are always too high lol
Definitely reading more!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2023Price knocked this one out of the park! Using the wonderful “bones” of Jane Austen’s novel, she weaves together a tale as exciting as it is groundbreaking. The feminist bent is not subtle — and is, in my opinion, part of the charm of this coming-of-age (of-sorts) saga.
The whodunnit is nice. The characterization is on point. And the adventurous pace keeps up the excitement.
I highly recommend this book — and can’t wait to dig into the next.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2022Tirzah Price did a wonderful job of keeping the plot of her book flowing and interesting. With this, she has won me over as a fan of period pieces, never before a favorite genre. Being a huge mystery buff since grade school though, and fancying myself on being able to figure out the who, what, and why before being revealed, I was quite impressed with the author’s ability to make her story moderately difficult to figure out. The interaction between the main character, Lizzie, and the book's supporting characters, including her parents, Jane, Charlotte and Collins, Wickham, and Darcy were a pleasure to follow along with. This book has me looking forward to the next two books in her series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2021“Do you purposefully misunderstand everything I say, Miss Bennet?”
“Do you purposefully overlook all inconvenient truths, Mr. Darcy?”
When sixteen year old Lizzie Bennet hears about a scandalous society murder, she sees an opportunity to prove herself as a solicitor by solving the case and ensuring justice is served. Except the man accused of the crime already has a lawyer on his side: Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the stern young heir to the prestigious Pemberley Associates law firm.
Lizzie is determined to solve the murder before Darcy can so that she can show the world that a woman can be just as good as a man. (The fact that Darcy is an infuriating snob doesn’t help.) But there’s still a killer on the loose, and as the case gets more complicated, Lizzie and Darcy may have to start working together to avoid becoming the next victims themselves.
“My, how refreshing. A man who urges me to be careful rather than tells me to stop meddling.”
I love seeing threads of a base idea woven into an entirely new tale. Pride and Premeditation is now one of my favorite retellings to date and I'd recommend it to even those outside of the Pride and Prejudice circle...being familiar with the story not required as it holds itself up on its own.
My only complaint was I didn't get the usual insulting love confession that Darcy is known for but that's only because it's one of my favorites. Super minor, really.
I can't wait to see what else Price does.
Recommended for P&P fans as well as those looking for a light, female-led whodunit.

5.0 out of 5 stars ✨Book Review✨
Lizzie desperately wants to be trained as a solicitor by Mr Bennett at his law firm in London but of course, society and her mother are against this idea. When Mr Bingley is arrested for murder she sees an opportunity to prove herself and sets off in pursuit of the truth and is determined to get herself hired as Mr Bingley’s solicitor. But Bingley already has representation in the tall, dark and brooding form of the young and ambitious Mr Darcy, himself a solicitor at his father’s firm Pemberley & Associates.
When the men around her refuse to look closer into the dealings that see Mr Bingley facing trial, Lizzie uses her intuition to interview potential witnesses and gather evidence that those around her have overlooked. When dashing Runner George Wickham offers his assistance Lizzie realises that she might need a man to make things a little easier but is she putting her trust in the right man?
This was such a fun reimagining with murder, mystery and pirates! This YA P&P has all the classic characters taking on familiar roles within the story but with an interesting twist. I read this one in a day and cannot wait to read more about Lizzie and Darcy in this world in the new book In Want of a Suspect!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid retelling with some delightful twists
I relly enjoyed the Lizzie-Darcy dynamic. Some of the characters were really close to the originals. Others were a bit altered to fit the story (I loved Gorgiana in this version) but sadly some were far off from the original, mainly Mr. Bennett. He was very stern and strict (or at least he came across that way) and I could find little of his delightful character from the original. I really enjoyed the whole mystery/conspiracy aspect (although I did figure out parts of it quite early).
So if you like the original or are a fan of the YA-murder-mystery genre you should read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two of my favourite things: Jane Austen and murder mystery!
Lizzie is determined to prove herself as a solicitor to her father so sets about to solve the latest case of murder and ensure justice is served. However, she doesn't envision that the defendant already has a solicitor, Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy. Lizzie takes it upon herself to solve the case before infuriating Mr Darcy, but before long, the pair have to start working together before they become the next victims.
I was so intrigued when I read the blurb of this book and quite sceptical as to how a classic romance novel could be rewritten into a mystery. Tirzah Price has managed to find a perfect balance between the two!
Elizabeth and Darcy still have the unique qualities that I found so special in the original novel. But they are channelled in such a way that makes the book even more exciting. It's also not just a total rewrite of the original; there's new places and faces to breathe a fresh life into the story.
