A rising body count.
A deadly creature.
A boy who inherits the mother of all monster problems.
Bookish and sickly Rob Stevenson knows he can’t kill the monster terrorizing his village alone so he sets out to hire Scotland’s best hunter.
Fire-breathing, trigger-happy Cat Mornay is hardly Rob’s idea of a hero.
But her kill list is impressive.
If her past encounter with this monster shows what she can do, then she’s the perfect hunter for the job.
But can Cat kill a creature who is faster, stronger, and growing smarter every day?
Reluctant heroes.
An unlikely friendship.
A gas-lit adventure in a world of dazzling magic, underworld crime, and mythical beasts.
And the hunt of a century...

- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2015Make sure you have a couple hours free before you start reading because this is one of those books that is impossible to put down. From the first page, the author really sucks you in. Her writing is crisp and clean, the settings are gorgeously detailed, and the characters are all a mixture of good and bad qualities that make them feel like real people. Because of this, the romance in this book feels genuine, and is probably one of my favorite love stories in a long time.
There are also some truly terrifying moments in this book. The monsters are really well-written and as the title suggests, they are a big part of this story. Almost as terrifying is the woman who hunts them, Cat. She is like no other heroine I've read, and I really loved her as a character. Despite a deeply flawed personality, she has this surprising noble streak that makes you root for her regardless of what else she's done.
This is definitely a must-read book, perfect for a rainy day. I can't recommend it enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2015This book is amazing. It absolutely needs to be made into a movie. It has elements of Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Twilight, etc. (basically any fantasy-fiction novel) which makes the novel very intriguing and popular. It has a unique story full of twists and shocking events that leave the reader hungry for more. This novel has a little bit of everything- so anyone can enjoy. It mixes many different genres together- adventure, horror, humor, superhero fantasy, science fiction, suspense, tragedy, etc.
The characters are definitely interesting. We have the lead female, Cat, who is a hunter and has the skills and strength to kill monsters that can easily wipe out 10 men. In contrast, the lead male, Rob, is someone who couldn't even kill a bird or rabbit. We also have children as characters, in particular Waverley and Jim Hawkins, who are strong and clever. And then we have Mr. Hyde and Liam, two characters whom we cannot tell if they are bad or good. There are also homosexual elements in the story, which also adds to the uniqueness of the book. A definite must-read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2022I loved this book!! I didn’t want it to end!!
I loved Rob so much, I felt bad for Cat. I really loved the “short people” too. The many characters were really well written with so much depth and so much in life that’s haunting them. The world in this book was so easy to picture, with all it’s beauty, and it’s flaws. Just such a great fantasy, or romantasy as the say!
I love to read Yea’s wonderful RomCom’s, but it was interesting to see that she writes just as well in the fantasy genre. I’m trying to get all her books read, and always eager for any new ones. She’s definitely on my list of favorites!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2015The writing in this book is great. It flows quickly without rushing important events, and the prose is descriptive while leaving just enough details to the imagination. I never could properly visualize the monster, which just made it that much creepier to read at night.
The characters especially make the story. Each was unique and deeply flawed, with a diversity that was both disturbing and impressive. No one was whole and untroubled, and I felt drawn to their struggles and triumphs. And, equally enjoyable, no character made it through the novel unchanged. Everyone underwent some dramatic transformation and, by the end, no one could be defined as simply "good" or "bad."
Aside from the troubled characters, my favorite thing about this novel was that it broke all my expectations. The author did a great job setting up what looked like a fantasy or romance trope...then steering the story in a totally different direction. Nothing went as I expected, which was refreshing.
There were a few characters that felt inconsistent at times, and a few scenes that were more violent or disturbing than I felt was necessary. But overall, this struck me as not only an excellent story, but a new one, breaking cliches, avoiding the perfect hero/heroine tropes, and allowing the main characters to be damaged and grow through their struggles.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2015This is such a badass, adventurous, exciting & even sexy book. I was extremely fascinated and captivated by the characters and storyline.
Rob and Cat are an awesome duo (sort of Duo because Cat is really leading the show!) as they encounter monsters and make their way through amazing settings. Castles and forests and Scotland--come on! I was so immersed in this story that I felt like I was following behind them. Teresa's writing is dark, gorgeous and layered--you won't regret taking this journey!
The one flaw you'll probably find with this book is that it doesn't have a movie deal---yet. : )

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging
What an engaging novel. A story that should be clichéd isn't at all. Well written in a lively style and with real whit. it was easy to fall into the story and stay there for a happy few hours. Grim, sharp, fun and clever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Damn!!!
Well damn, I've been reading so much junk that I'd forgotten the cost of a true writer.
This book took me back to my younger years, when stories were rich and lush, characters fleshed out and made of many
