"A fine collection of short tales to chill the bones of young and old with interesting notes for folktale buffs." -- -- Children's Books 1981 (NY Public Library).
From the Back Cover
Some boys and girls were at a party one night. There was a graveyard down the street, and they were talking about how scary it was.
"Don't ever stand on a grave after dark," one of the boys said. "The person inside will grab you."
"A grave doesn't scare me," said one of the girls. "I'll do it right now. . . ."

- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2010If You love horror, then I strongly recommend getting the Scary Stories To tell In The Dark Series.
These books have some of the greatest horror stories and pictures ever written.
They are perfect for reading on a dark Lonely night, Camp outs, Halloween gatherings, Slumber parties, College gatherings, Even reading underneath a blanket with a flashlight. Have some fun with your friends and made a video of yourself narrating some of your favorite Scary Stories and then post the video onto youtube to share with the world.
You can even write out the stories onto emails and print them out along with the pictures after scanning the books and then print them out on paper, and handing them out to friends at School, parties, or even to trick Or Treaters for HALLOWEEN.
You can even save your favorite images from these books onto your computer and send them to Custom [...] web site, To get them printed onto black T shirts that say SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK in dripping blood red text to help promote these great books and get them noticed by those who never heard about them.
You can even share the images to your local tattoo parlor and ask if they would post them onto their tattoo walls as suggestions to customers
If you really loved these books and they meant something to you in your childhood, why not have a few of the images tattooed onto your body? Just take these books to your tattoo artist and ask them if they would.
SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK BOOKS ARE THE BEST.
I only hope that a horror movie producer will make some horror movies about these books with some of the stories in it. something kinda like the urban legends movies or one missed call
The Movie A girl goes to a dance club and shows off her little brothers Scary Stories to tell in the dark books to friends.
Only each one of her friends die in the Styles of each story after reading them online or from watching the video from youtube on their cell phones.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2019I loved this book as a kid.
I remember waiting for the book fair days to come, the excitement of what there may be. When I bought this book, I was so happy as a child. Now I have children of my own, and we were telling ghost stories by the fire.
I realized - I know the perfect resource, and I went online and found the kindle edition of scary stories!
It was everything I remembered and it was a hit at the fireside ghost story chat!
The illustrations drive home the overall spook factor of this book. If you haven't read it, or heard these stories, grab it!
If you have, but don't own it, GRAB IT!
Seriously this is a great value - there are also 2 more books in the series which are well worth it - but nothing beats the original!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2016This book is nostalgic for me. As a kid, we'd hide in the closet and read this book by flashlight. Back then, the stories were scary and stuck with you. I made sure to buy this version of the book to get the original artwork that was in them. Reading them now, the stories are definitely directed toward children (as described) and aren't quite as terrifying as I remember, but still fun to read through and remember. What makes this a complete five star for me is the illustrations, which in my opinion, are even scarier as an adult!
Great purchase, great memories. I recommend it, especially for those who grew up with these books!
Also, I bought a used copy to make sure that I got the version with the original drawings. There is a newer version out there that doesn't have Stephen Gammell's work in it, so beware about that if you're buying it for the art work!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2016I found this book on Amazon while I was searching for good Halloween books. The reviews were great for both the stories and illustrations. I was aware this was a collection of children's stories culled from folklore by the author which is a cool concept. I was told by my friends who read these stories as children that this was a classic and it may be. However, this book is truly for kids right down the instructions to insert jump scares in certain places when reading aloud. Not what I was looking for as I'm a middle aged man interested more in Lovecraft. type stories.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2013My brother and I were obsessed with this book growing up. I remembered the cover completely and how insanely scary the stories were. Twenty years later, I knew what the cover looked like and even lines from some of the stories. I searched for the book for nostalgic purposes, but going back and reading a lot of the stories are just as funny as they are scary.
About half of this book's charm comes from the original illustrations by Stephen Gammell (1989). The original pictures were extremely horrifying yet somehow so silly that it's difficult to describe. Sometimes we'd even make up our own scary stories to go along with the pictures. Unfortunately, the book has been reissued with new illustrations by Brett Helquist--the new illustrations have been very disappointing to most reviewers and seem pretty dull. If you are inclined to buy the book for the stories, those are the same between editions. However, be careful if you want a copy with particular illustrations as the two prints are not often distinguished. Hope this helps!

5.0 out of 5 stars My imagination running wild with all the vivid tales and nicely sketched monsters
Oh boy if you never want to sleep again then this is the book for you. Many a night during my childhood this book kept me from sleeping. My imagination running wild with all the vivid tales and nicely sketched monsters. 10/10 because this takes me back 20 years again and brings forth the same feelings of unease when reading.
