There are rumors that Golden Cove is haunted. That's why Joe Bierden and his crew are hired to take a group of scientists to the area for a month of research. For Joe, it's easy money. He plans to do a little fishing, some relaxing and simply enjoy the easiest gig of his life. At least that's the plan. Sometimes easy money isn't as easy as you expect. There are things moving in the water, and ghostly apparitions which seem undeniably real. Joe's problems get worse when he and his crew save a drowning girl who disappears only minutes later, and the scientific team captures an aquatic monster that appears almost...human. They drag it aboard and take it back to shore for experimentation, realizing only too late that the monster has a family who wants it back. A very, very big family. All the whispers about Golden Cove and its strange inhabitants are as true today as they were when the little fishing village had a different name and a truly dark reputation. Those who thought that the horror in Innsmouth had been vanquished one-hundred years ago were wrong. And it just might cost Joe and his colleagues their lives. “James A. Moore is the new prince of grimdark fantasy. His work is full of dark philosophy and savage violence, desperate warriors and capricious gods. This is fantasy for people who like to wander nighttime forests and scream at the moon. Exhilarating as hell."

—Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of SNOWBLIND and ARARAT

“Gripping, horrific, and unique, James Moore continues to be a winner, whatever genre he’s writing in. Well worth your time.”

– Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling author of the InCryptid and Toby Daye series

James A. Moore’s, The Last Sacrifice, the 1st book in The Tides of War series, delivers on every level. A pulse quickening dark fantasy ripe with fascinating, multifaceted heroes and villains, and a vein of the horrific that barely hides, squirming just below the surface of it all. I can’t wait to see where this goes in Book 2.

Thomas E. Sniegoski – New York Times Best Selling author of The Fallen series, and the Remy Chandler books.

"You emerge from any Moore novel feeling like you've spent some time in that world––traumatised, beaten up, bloodied from battle––and The Last Sacrifice is no exception. Brilliantly imaginative, intricately drawn, this is a novel and an experience you won't forget in a hurry." - Tim Lebbon, author of The Silence and Relics

“THE LAST SACRIFICE is brilliant, devious, dark and compelling. This is epic fantasy at its very best. Highly recommended!” –Jonathan Maberry, NY Times bestselling author of KILL SWITCH and MARS ONE

JAMES A. MOORE is the author of over forty novels, including the critically acclaimed Fireworks, Under The Overtree, Blood Red, Blood Harvest, the Serenity Falls trilogy (featuring his recurring anti-hero, Jonathan Crowley) Cherry Hill, Alien: Sea of Sorrows and the Seven Forges series of novels. He has twice been nominated for the Bram Stoker Award and spent three years as an officer in the Horror Writers Association, first as Secretary and later as Vice President.

Never one to stay in one genre for too long, James has recently written epic fantasy novels in the series SEVEN FORGES (Seven Forges, the Blasted Lands, City of Wonders and The Silent Army). He is working on a new series called The Tides Of War. The first book in the series The Last Sacrifice, came out this last January and the sequel, Fallen Gods, is due out in late December. Pending novels also include A Hell Within (a Griffin & Price Novel) co-written with Charles R. Rutledge and an apocalyptic Sci-Fi novel tentatively called Spores. Why be normal?

Being a confirmed Luddite, he is working up the nerve to plunge completely into the electronic publications age.

James Moore's writing is among the best. All the characters have their own stories and the way Moore tells a tale keeps you guessing about what will happen next. Definitely a page Turner tale!

This was an exciting fun read for me. It's not filled with scientific jargon and psuedo-explanations---it is just plain fun! It is a quick read that will quickly ensnare many readers into a mile-a-minute action adventure. Although labeled as a book of horror, it is likely more appropriately an action adventure wrapped in a science fiction fantasy. Yes you have to suspend your sense of disbelief but isn't that expected, even required, in science fiction/horror genres.

"Deeper" is a first person account of Captain Joe Bierden who hires out his yacht, Isabella's Dream, to a group of college instructors and students along with a couple of noted parapsychologists who are set on exploring a series of mysterious underwater caves near Golden Cove--a town that may have a history blacker than many imagine. There is, of course, something or some things down in those caves best left alone but our explorers, with varying motivations, soon capture one of the "Deep Ones" and that sets off a tragic chain of events that doesn't reach resolution until the last page of the book.

Joe and perhaps Charlie, his friend and first mate, are the only truly deeply fleshed characters in the book--most of the rest are two-dimensional and predictable. Joe was an enigma to me as he was something less than a swashbuckling hero and more of an Everyman capable of making errors in judgement at just the wrong moment. There is nothing particularly deep (pun intended) about the storyline yet it is a thrill-paced fast read that kept me hooked most of the book. It has that movie spectator sense where we say "don't be stupid and go in there or don't do that" kind of suspense--and, of course, they do go in there and they do do that--but that's the joy of the book, it makes you stay with the characters and story to see what happens next.

I found James A. Moore to write in a style that flows so comfortably and so naturally that I seldom had to stop and reread a passage for meaning nor did I ever get the sensation that something was too awkward or too inappropriately presented to affect the flow of the plot or the characters. There is nothing profound or deeply prophetic in "Deeper" but the true fan of this sub genre should have a rollicking good time with this fast paced novel.

This book barely got 3 stars. When all is said and done it's a quick, okay read with some interesting action scenes that pull you along through the story.
The narrative quickly arrives in Lovecraft's Innsmouth but in modern times so you have to give it some points for that. The downside is the reader sees the whole thing through the viewpoint of the least interesting character. In fact the protagonist is not even interested in the story! That is until later, when it hits home and finally gets personal. The protagonist is your average Joe. Yeah, his name is actually Joe. He's a yacht captain who is paid to take a group of scientists and divers out for exploratory research. He's a two-dimensional character who seems to have a lot of stereotypical blue collar ideas about his brainy passengers. He does occasionally lift his head up out of the flat page by having self reflective moments where he's aware of this. Those moments helped me to finally get comfortable with him, just accept that I gave him my money so now let's just leave the dock and head out.
Looking at supernatural events through the eyes of Joe, you're not going to get much creep factor. Things do happen that alot of people would think are unnerving but Joe just shrugs them off. The biggest minus for me was that this is a horror book that contains very little fear. You will get apprehension, disgust, shock, and loss. Fearful situations are definitely there, but it just doesn't sink in until the do or die moments and by then it's just shoved aside with rage and instinct for survival.
It was a little hard to relate to the ways that some of the characters reacted to strange and serious situations. So the paranormal has hit the fan. College age crew member missing in the night? Well obviously he could've just found a hooker and didn't come back to work! Hmmm.. he's got a girlfriend he loves, left his cell phone in his cabin and his best friend said he'd never done anything like that before. Fortunately there were a few background characters that had some common sense and kind of saved the verisimilitude of these scenes by finally calling his parents for example.
If you just gloss over the people parts, the setting is interesting and the action, though often a stretch, has a momentum that keeps it going. It's got deep ones! We get to see them up close and Joe does have some clever moments where he takes care of business. The action is the book's strongest point if you can just accept that sometimes they get through things by "luck" as Joe puts it.
The second strongest point is getting up in the face of a deep one and talking to it. They communicate through a limited dream-like telepathy and that's pretty cool. Don't worry too much about Captain Joe. If you want to dive with the deep ones, Joe knows a pretty good spot and he can definitely take you out there.

If u read all some of the other reviews (like I did) u will get the storyline of this book. So I will not repeat all that stuff. It was recommended to me by Amazon so I ordered it and saved it for a later read. My mistake. The cover pic made me think of a cheezy horror novel, but by the end, I think it is a perfect cover. I was hooked by this book within the first few pages. The story has three main characters; the people, the deep ones, and the paranormal. I fell in love with the Capt and his love for his wife right away. All the people got into your head or heart. U will experience love, fear, awe, sadness, and the extream desire to kick someones butt in this novel! I was suprised at what the horror part of the book entailed, and the paranormal that was added in complemented the storyline. Everything fit together well. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to read a really good story, not just horror.
