NB – the summary above the reviews implies the opposite of what reviewers have actually said. Some do state it is "hard to read" but this is due to its sad content, NOT due to it being badly written.

Baby P was just 17 months old when his mother’s boyfriend and his brother abused and murdered him, while his mother sat by, surfing the internet.

Sylvia Likens was a shy teenager who loved The Beatles, whose foster mother encouraged the neighbourhood children to humiliate and torture her.

Read these and six other
heart-breaking child abuse true crime stories told in the voices of children murdered by their caregivers.

How can we raise awareness of this horrific crime and prevent 27 children in the US and 2 children in the UK, every week, from suffering and dying?

Other children in this volume include:

  • Michael, whose mother convinced doctors to treat him for epilepsy in a case of Munchausen’s by Proxy
  • Jeanette, who was ‘homeschooled’ to hide the torture from those who cared
  • 3-year-old JaQuinn, who was burned with a blowtorch to punish him for bed-wetting
  • Amy, who was 4 years old when she was hung up by her hair and used as a punch-bag

You will also read about the injuries each child suffered, the trials and sentencing of their murderers, the possible reasons why parents commit these horrific crimes, warning signs to look out for, and steps towards prevention.

Join me in my search for answers to the question, “How can we save children's lives?”

Not suitable for children, nor those who find depictions of children's suffering deeply upsetting.

"YOU'RE WRITING WHAT?!?" is the thing most people say about my books.

A child is abused to death every few minutes, and I write to raise awareness, and to honour the memory of the children, such as Gabriel Fernandez, Sylvia Likens, and Baby P, telling the stories they cannot tell us.

I begin with a fictionalised version of each child's story, based firmly on the facts, then follow up with details of the trials and sentencing.

I'm on Facebook: Jessica Jackson – Writer Against Abuse

I live in the UK, and when I'm not writing about horrific cases, I love walking by the river, and eating chocolate. I'm a fan of soul, reggae and r&b music.

It's heartbreaking, but we must read to learn. We need to learn the signs of abused children, they need someone. So thank you for telling their stories, they aren't here to do that. Taken too soon from weak, mean people.

My heart broke whilst reading the tragic stories of these children. I was not prepared for the uncontrollable tears that streamed down my face, forcing me to take breaks.
The author did an amazing job of giving the children a voice. Reading it from their point of view packed a deep punch. It brought me in closer, forced me to take notice and contemplate as I was left imagining what they may have been feeling in the hours leading to their death. There were moments when I spat furious outbursts at the pages. Not understanding why people would do such heinous things to children or stand by and allow someone else to.
This book is one that I shall remember. Thank you for bringing awareness to child abuse and keeping their memories alive. My eyes are open.
Amazing!!!

The author returns with the 2nd volume in this series : eight cases of children between the ages of 2 and 13 who are fatally abused by adult caregivers. (4 cases occur in the US, 3 in the UK and 1 in Australia) The author tells the story of the abuse first from the child's perspective (filled with rationalizations to explain why their parent would hurt them so...along with hope that it will never happen again.) Then she sums up the tragic death of the child through police and court reports and records.
Ms. Jackson concludes with listing some warning signs of abuse and some ways to prevent future abuse. Her concept of preventing child abuse is effectively presented in her books through her multi-perspective presentation of these cases. Highly recommended.

This book was such a heartfelt book. These poor children of God that lost their lives at the hands of a person that was suppose to love and nurture them. I to am a victim of abuse. Physical and sexual. Its horrible when you can't count on your own parents for safety.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Voice for the Voiceless
Reviewed in Canada on November 22, 2021
These are the stories of 8 children whose deaths occurred because of broken systems and no voice to speak on their behalf. Until now.
Author, Jessica Jackson, describes the horrific torture these victims endured all through the eyes of the children themselves. Their stories are heart wrenching and incomprehensible and I asked myself repeatedly, "How can a person do these things to a child?" I don't know the answer, but Jackson's mission is to reveal the brokenness of our agencies and departments whose very mandate is to indeed protect the innocent and vulnerable - the ones that can't speak up for themselves.
Although it is a tough read, pretending it doesn't happen is not the answer. Kudos to the author for shining the light on what can be corrected and changes that can be made in order to prevent the repetition of these heinous crimes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and disturbing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 30, 2021
This book is excellent, so well written and researched. The way in which the initial part of each story portrays how the children suffered is delivered sensitively before moving to the factual aftermath of adult failure, it is both intriguing and difficult to accept. It shocks as it highlights the abhorrent side of human nature and reminds us that any one of us in a professional and non professional capacity can make mistakes and miss obvious signs of neglect. We must all be more vigilant. Well done Jessica, this is a moving and much needed novel. I hope it’s a great success and we see a Sky or Netflix adaptation to follow that will further highlight the plight of some of our most unfortunate children, and saves some of them from harm they don’t deserve.

5.0 out of 5 stars SHOCKING & DISTURBING!!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 27, 2021
This book broke my heart. I read this book over a week ago now and normally I would start another book right after, but still after reading these shocking and disturbing stories I'm finding it hard because it's still playing on my mind and will say it's one of the hardest books I've had to read.

I love to read all sorts from light to dark reads but in fiction, I know it's made up and not real, then I read a non - fiction book like this and I have to say it did mess with my head because these stories are based on true events and to real children.

These stories are just absolutely heartbreaking that left me emotionally drained, after each one I put my kindle down and I just broke down and cried. It's absolutely shocking what these poor children went through and by the very people who should of been looking out for them and not the ones who neglected and tortured them. It made me sick to my stomach with the evil these evil people did.

I think the author Jessica Jackson has done amazing telling these stories and how she told them and brilliantly written too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard hitting
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 23, 2024
This is a difficult book to read. I think it's meant to be though. I mean what sort of person could enjoy reading about such depravity? And I found myself wondering why I was reading it. And I think I agree with the author. There's a certain respect rewarded to the children in these cases by learning their story. Their betrayal. They're not forgotten. To understand what they went through, means we care. It means lessons can be learnt. I admit, I had to skim through parts, because I'd like to sleep at night, but the fact that these children are not lost to us, their stories not forgotten, that they remain in our thoughts, means their pain is no longer alone. I just wish these stories never existed. That we didn't need to learn these lessons, or fail so badly to protect those most vulnerable.
