Marilyn A. Moran's seminal work on couples childbirth brought back to print for future generations to enjoy. From Marilyn's introduction in her own words - "This book is an exploration of the interpersonal aspect of childbirth for husband and wife and its effect on their growth and development in two-in-oneness." Author Marilyn A. Moran, the first advocate for husband and wife unassisted homebirth says, “Childbirth is a dialogue, not a monologue. The husband gives his wife a love gift and nine months later, she gives the gift of a baby into his loving hands. She’s present and accepting of his gift during coitus; he should participate and accept her gift during birth…At the moment of childbirth, when a woman is making her response to the genital gesture her man had initiated, no one should come between them then, not even briefly.” She said, “It is imperative that couples abandon the doctors’ quasi-pathological approach to birth…When an obstetrician steps in between the lovers at the moment of birth to catch the baby, the cyclic giving and receiving of significant genital gifts is shattered.” Originally published in 1981, the second edition of Birth and the Dialogue of Love remains faithful to its original content. The medical technology has changed since 1981, but the biological process and emotional power of birth has not. The birth stories read like love stories. What couple wouldn’t want to give birth in a sensual, romantic, loving environment? This classic and groundbreaking book explores a concept that might seem challenging and foreign to many. However, Moran says about the birthing mother, “Groundless fears and cultural taboos are the only obstacles holding her back from the goal nature intended that she achieve.”

Full of facts and wisdom, written in a very down to earth style. No fear mongering or harsh judgements here, although the clear bias is for unassisted (or rather "husband assisted") birth. This perspective on birth as an experience designed for lovers, and not just for the mother, is rare and refreshing, just very inspirational, worth the read even if you do not choose UC. We are having our 6th baby (2nd UC) and it has shifted my perspective and touched my 20yr marriage in a very positive way. Thank you!

What a thrill to have Lynn and Bob bring this book back to the forefront of the homebirth movement. It was my first introduction to birthing on our own without outside assistance (or interference.) I had three births in hospital, one with a radical episiotomy (flat on my back in stirrups,) one "emergency" un-necesarean for so-called transverse lie (baby did a 180 degree turn before the doctor fished him out, reaching for the head and finding the feet,) and one VBaC semi-flat, again in stirrups, with baby delivered sunny-side up.

I just knew there had to be a better way to birth, and had read "Silent Knife" on cesarean prevention after the fact. I learned that positioning is key and had been bullied out of the natural one I assumed in the last two births. Following my instincts would most likely have led to better outcomes in each scenario. That's when I found Marilyn's book and found my tribe in the Do-It-Yourself birthing movement. My next delivery was a breeze as I assumed the marriage proposal position in my bathtub. I could not believe how simple and easy the baby flowed from my body after two difficult births in hospital, plus a c-section, following everyone's direction but my own! I went on to meet Laura Shanley (Unassisted Childbirth) and the Griesemers (Unassisted Homebirth) and others who have become lifelong friends and supporters.

Blessed to have had five more successful freebirths at home (six total, one solo-came too fast to call hubby home!) All of our kids are naturally-spaced around 2-3 years apart, thanks to ecological breastfeeding and attachment parenting.
Marilyn Moran will always hold a special place in my heart for showing me the way home, instilling in me the confidence to take back my power and follow my instincts. Birthing in freedom is a beautiful thing. Thanks to Lynn and Bob for their tender loving care on this project!

Thought provoking, life changing.
I have an original copy of this book.  I was naturally excited to see any additions that were made to the second edition.  I was not disappointed.   The forwards Lynn and Bob Griesemer give offer wonderful personal insights to who the beautiful woman Marilyn Moran was. They both offer wonderful pertinent references.  Marilyn's thoughts on the significance of the moment of birth to a couple are beautiful, logical and precise.  This book helped  open my mind to the beautiful possibilities of birth and family life.  I referred to it, re read it as I prepared for each of the births of my children (Five of my six were born at home, unassisted.)  This book gave me not only the confidence, but the desire to allow my husband to lovingly be the only attendant of our children's births.  There is such a wealth of information contained in this book  to help a couple prepare to lovingly birth their baby.

What a refreshing read! It is so good to read about the beauty of home birth, the family, and the depth of husband and wife love through the miraculous procreative act! This is a must read for anyone pregnant and/or researching childbirth.

This book is one of only three or four books to change my life in dramatic fashion. After reading it, my wife and I had five children that we delivered at home together without the intrusive "help" of the hospital-in-your-home technicians (midwives). It is a great shame that this book is out of print because it is the only one to describe the common sense of birthing as an element in the sacrament of marriage and of the cycle of exchange between wedded man and woman from conception to delivery. The late Mrs. Moran was a wonderful woman and very generous in responding to correspondents. Here's hoping that Terra Publishing which owns the rights to this book brings it back into print soon.

It's been quite a few years since I read this book, but with the resurgence of unassisted childbirth at home, I felt that this would be a valuable resource for those who want to consider this as an option. The book is well written and very personal in the way it is presented. While all of the views of the author are not necessarily my own, she does present this material in a way that is thought provoking and informative. Birthing women and their partners can benefit from reading this material in that it gives back to them a sense of control that is sadly lacking in today's highly mechanized childbirth. I am a practicing midwife with over 22 years of experience and have seen many shifts and changes in the birthing community, many not for the better. Anyone interested in homebirth, "unassisted" birth, or just family will find this an interesting read.
