*WINNER OF THE NEWBERY MEDAL* kira-kira (kee ra kee ra): glittering; shining Glittering. That's how Katie Takeshima's sister, Lynn, makes everything seem. The sky is kira-kira because its color is deep but see-through at the same time. The sea is kira-kira for the same reason. And so are people's eyes. When Katie and her family move from a Japanese community in Iowa to the Deep South of Georgia, it's Lynn who explains to her why people stop on the street to stare. And it's Lynn who, with her special way of viewing the world, teaches Katie to look beyond tomorrow. But when Lynn becomes desperately ill, and the whole family begins to fall apart, it is up to Katie to find a way to remind them all that there is always something glittering -- kira-kira -- in the future.

As a child, Cynthia Kadohata’s biggest life goal was not to be a writer. It was to own a dog. Since then, she has had six rescue dogs as her best friends. And, she has been extremely fortunate to have mostly worked as a writer during her adult life. She is the author of ten children’s books, including Kira-Kira, winner of the Newbery Medal; The Thing About Luck, winner of the National Book Award; Weedflower, winner of the Jane Addams Peace Award; Cracker, winner of six state awards as voted on by kids; A Place to Belong, longlisted for the National Book Award; and the upcoming Saucy, about a piglet like millions of others, yet also TOTALLY herself.

I had originally read this book while I was in middle school I believe, and was absolutely inlove with it then. I was never a big reader but throughout the years always thought about this book as it was one of the only books I enjoyed. Recently after 10 years I’ve really gotten into reading and am a bit of a book worm now, so naturally I needed to purchase this as it was still on my mind. It was just as good as the first time I read it, would highly recommend to younger and older readers.

I taught this book to 5th/6th graders in a book club. It was deep, but emotionally appropriate for their development, met their skill levels in reading, was engaging, and offered amazing discussion on family themes, discrimination themes, history, loss, and symbolism. Heart moving. Poignant. Funny. Definitely read.

C. S. Lewis once said "A children's book which is good only to children must, of necesity, be a bad children's book." This book was written for children - well, middle-schoolers - but it's a beautiful book, warm and rich and moving. I loved spending time with Katie and Lynn, loved being a part of their world and their culture.

I first picked up this book because I thought it would be like a children's version of A Passage to India and The Namesake, two books I love because they capture perfectly how I feel as an American living in Peru; never quite fitting in to Peruvian culture, but also no longer fitting in to American culture.

The book does touch lightly on those themes, but the focus is much, much more on the strength of the relationship between the two sisters. It reminded me a lot of my sister, even though our relationship was very different, and I loved it for that.

Kira Kira is a living book - Charlotte Mason fans and most homeschoolers will know what I mean - and deserves its place on my shelves and in my heart.

And yes, I cried at the end. :)

This is a book I would definitely recommend. I wish there had been a bit more "kira-kira" - real sparkle! - to the writing in places. The reader needs to experience exactly what that feels like, and that would have to be created by an extremely good writer. And a good editor was needed at times along the way, too, especially for the ending. As with many books, the first part is much better written than the last, which feels rushed and under-polished. Too bad. Still, this is a good story, worth reading.

Kadohata's book is an extraordinary contribution to young adult literature. The story is about a Japanese family trying to assimilate into American Society. Most of the book takes place in a small town in Georgia. There are only 36 Japanese people in the whole town. All of them work at the chicken hatchery.

The book is narrated by a young girl of about 10 through 13. She tells innocently, yet with realization, the truths about the prejudice that she encounters, and that her family encounters. In the course of the tale, the deepest and most intimate feelings and concerns are expressed. The feelings of Katie, the protagonist with respect to her sister Lynnie are particularly precious. Lynnie had lymphoma and was slowly dying. Katie reacts to this mostly in a very good way. But occasionally, she slips in her own eyes in terms if her personal ethics and morality.

While many books have been written about oppressed minorities, in America, we usually don't consider Orientals as an oppressed minority. Yet even in America today, we surely have plenty of xenophobia and prejudice. The story goes around and around in America; over and over and over again.

This book is recommended for all those readers who wish to have a truly personal experience in terms of American integration. This book is a very fine offering.

An emotional and joyful book about a working-class Japanese American family in Iowa. Kira-Kira captures universal emotions of love, sadness, and healing with great empathy and captivating language.

Katie’s immigrant Japanese family faces economic hardships during an era of racism. They end up in the South. Katie loves her sister, Lynn, who makes her see that everything is kira-kira—glittering, beautiful, and miraculous. Lynn becomes sick, which complicates life further—and this sister-bonding and deepening of conflicts make this book into a tear-jerker during the last half. The writing is gorgeous and emotional.

きらきら、きらきら。輝く本でした。

多読用に購入。英語は素直で、文字も大きめ。
難しい単語はなく、辞書もほぼ不要です。
日本でいえば、小学校6年生の夏休みの推薦図書レベルでしょうか。
