From Library Journal

The gardener or cook who wishes to grow herbs on a small scale will find this a useful guide to raising 22 kinds in pots, either for decoration or for cooking. Zabar covers soil preparation, methods of starting plants, care, and includes 17 recipes. In one excellent chapter he covers training herbs into topiaries, and in another discusses using them to make wreaths, sachets, and similar items. (Zabar acknowledges the help of herb farmer Sal Gilbertie, whose more comprehensive Kitchen Herbs , LJ 4/15/88, deals with growing herbs in a garden and has over 100 more recipes.) Zabar's is an appealing title for apartment dwellers or those needing only a few fresh herbs. Small line drawings by the author. Terry M. Cole, Harrisville Central Sch. Lib., N.Y.

I am an avid gardener and especially enjoy growing herbs. This book is absolutely wonderful! I have read and re-read it. The writing style and drawings make this book enchanting! I would recommend this to anyone who loves herbs.

This is a handsome little book on herbs and has some of the best information in some areas that
I have encountered. There is a history of herbs, which also reminds you that you are growing "the descendents of the very herbs that were cultivated more than 2,000 years ago at villas in Herculaneum".
How to plant, with very good directions, is included; but realize, as the book's title says, these will not be field grown herbs but in containers. There is elegant and simple organic advice on dealing with bugs and fertilizers and even the beauty of terra cotta pots.

The illustrations of the herbs are drawings, that will not really help you identify which variety you might be trying to look up - they are just not detailed enough - just very simple. There is also not too much direction on how to plant each specific variety of herbs and only 22 herbs are described, but those descriptions, again are excellent.
This book does have some of the better instructions on how to harvest herbs, this is so sadly lacking in other books. Included in the contents are, history, cultivating, some herbs to grow, herbal topiaries, some simple recipes and uses of herbs. There is no index included.
If you are interested in growing herbs in pots, this would be a useful book as long as you are aware of its limitations.

This was a lovely little book, with delicate drawings & a lovely, romantic cover. But it is not for the serious gardener who wants to learn more about growing topiary. It’s a “gift” book, designed to set in a guest room or as a hostess gift. But def NOT what I was looking for. Returned.
