A darkly funny, frightening novel about a young woman learning how to take what she wants from a witch who may be too good to be true, from the author of The Return.

All her life, Annie has played it nice and safe. After being unceremoniously dumped by her longtime boyfriend, Annie seeks a fresh start. She accepts a teaching position that moves her from Manhattan to a small village upstate. She’s stunned by how perfect and picturesque the town is. The people are all friendly and warm. Her new apartment is dreamy too, minus the oddly persistent spider infestation.

Then Annie meets Sophie. Beautiful, charming, magnetic Sophie, who takes a special interest in Annie, who wants to be her friend. More importantly, she wants Annie to stop apologizing and start living for herself. That’s how Sophie lives. Annie can’t help but gravitate toward the self-possessed Sophie, wanting to spend more and more time with her, despite the fact that the rest of the townsfolk seem…a little afraid of her. And like, okay. There are some things. Sophie’s appearance is uncanny and ageless, her mansion in the middle of the woods feels a little unearthly, and she does seem to wield a certain power…but she couldn’t be…could she?

Editorial Reviews

Review

“This witty page-turner put its spell on me! Cackle is a charming and very contemporary story about self-realization—a gal-pal Addams Family, in the best way. Clever and massively enjoyable.” —Zoje Stage, USA Today and internationally bestselling author of Baby Teeth and Getaway

“Reading
Cackle was like stumbling upon a candy cottage in a dark wood: utterly surprising, deceptively delightful, and a little bit scary, too. I gobbled it up in a weekend, cackling all the while.”—emily m. danforth, author of Plain Bad Heroines and The Miseducation of Cameron Post

“Cackle delivers a lesson that every woman needs to hear: embrace your inner witch! Sweet, sinister, and 100 percent delightful.” —Alma Katsu, author of The Hunger and The Deep

"Wry, dark, and deliciously witchy. I loved every page of this gripping feminist tale.”—
Alexis Henderson, author of The Year of the Witching

“As funny as it is frightening, Cackle by Rachel Harrison is the perfect book to cuddle up with on a crisp fall evening.” -PopSugar

"
Cackle is an all-too-relatable story about finding your inner strength even when you're at rock bottom, tackling the realities of post-break-up life with levity and charm. This book is an absolute delight, and everyone needs a friend like Sophie." - Genevieve Gornichec, Author of The Witch's Heart

"
Cackle is that rare book that has it all: a searingly honest portrayal of all-consuming heartbreak, an exploration of the pitfalls of making new friends past thirty, a few revenge fantasies come to life, and a whole lotta witchcraft. Harrison's clever prose will have you laughing and crying at once, and I promise you will never look at spiders the same way again."—Molly Pohlig, author of The Unsuitable

"It’s no surprise that Harrison’s latest traffics in witchcraft, but there’s nothing predictable about her take. She writes about women’s autonomy and how it can be seen as a threat; about heteronormative romance and how it can suppress who women truly are. It’s served in a friendship story that showcases Harrison’s strength at writing powerful and empowered women with razor-sharp wit and a touch of darkness. This book wonders why this kind of woman is feared; in Harrison’s hands, we’re totally under their spell." --
Library Journal (Starred Review)

"Weird, disturbing, creepy, and wonderful, Cackle is one of my favorite books of the year." -Mystery and Suspense Magazine

A witchy delight!

A witchy delight!
What a veritable October treat the new novel CACKLE by Rachel Harrison is! An unconfident, unhappy 30-year-old teacher at a crossroads in her life, Annie moves to a quaint town in upstate New York and gradually begins to come into her own through her friendship with longtime resident Sophie, who maybe, possibly might be a witch. A female-empowerment fable of poignance and wicked delight, CACKLE is wildly entertaining and cozy to a fault, featuring thoughtful prose, vivid characters, and more than a couple seriously creepy moments. I devoured it in a matter of days and was sad when it came to an end; I would have been perfectly happy to live with these characters for another 300 pages. CACKLE is the perfect witchy autumn read.

This book was so special. I was never sure where it would end up and I loved the feminine positivity, and Ralph.

This book was a slow read for me, but enjoyable nevertheless. It was really a female empowerment book masquerading as a tale of a misunderstood witch. Sophie never admits to being one, and the term is only used once during an argument. But as Annie tries to get comfortable in this new little town, she experiences enough to make it clear in my mind.

While I liked Annie, her constant self-deprecating humor and obvious low self esteem got a little grating after a while. It didn't end even after giving in to Sophie's world and becoming a close friend of hers. I just wanted to shake her many times.

"Maybe the hardest thing for me to believe would have been that Sophie would want to be my friend. That she would take a special interest in me, take me under her wing. Maybe that was the most severe bend in my reality. After that, it was easy to believe in magic, to accept that ghosts are real and to play with cute spider accomplices."

Her constant personal putdowns didn't always jive with her acceptance of the "witchy" things that went on all around her. I get it, she's finding her true self in this new place she's in, but does she have to assume the worst all the time? Sophie did things on her time, and never seemed to have doubts like Annie. The best part in the book is a disagreement between the two friends where everything is thrown out on the table. Sophie reveals how lonely she gets and how much she depends on Annie.

""...I’m not ashamed of who I am. Of what I am. What is it about a woman in full control of herself that is so utterly frightening? Can you tell me, Annie?”"

Sophie puts it all out there, and hopes that Annie won't be swayed by fear. While there's no huge drama in any of the book, this disagreement sets in motion events that will push Annie to change completely. Its an interesting feminist story, with men who are weak or fearful of the unknown. There isn't one competent man in this story, and its clearly done that way so the reader doesn't get bogged down by their opinions. While I wish the story wasn't so blatant with the messaging, it was written well and the relationship between Annie and Sophie does evolve enough to be satisfying.

I really enjoyed this book, even if I was lead to believe it was scary. The story was cozy and enlightening for someone who sees her old self in Annie at the beginning. I wish I had had a Sophie, but really I became my own.

First, I want to say that this book is not a horror. Don't go into this novel expecting it to be a horror story.

It is a story that focuses on a woman overcoming her insecurities due to a new friend coming into her life after a move. There is magic and other similar elements. But it's not spells being tossed around for no reason. No incantations being chanted throughout the chapters. Just a more grounded take on a witchcraft story.

Annie is a great lead character. Her sense of humor and her own insecurities reminded me a lot of myself so it was easy to immerse myself into her world. The other anchor of this book is obviously Sophie and she is another great character. Her flaws are different then Annie's but you still find yourself liking her. When she opens up a bit more about her own past, you will feel sympathy for what she went to as a woman who has spent a long time jus trying to live her life.

The story starts out seeming like such a sweet, cozy time with quirky small-town characters. But a little bit of darkness starts to creep in. Not enough for this book to be horror. But enough that your investment in the story keeps growing. Even with those little darker moments, the story doesn't lose its cozy and comfortable feel. I believe that contrasting mix works in the novel's favor. Any shifts in tone seem natural and are not jarring. I can see how some people wouldn't like the ending because it goes against what a more "Hollywood" ending would be if this were a movie. But I personally loved the ending (aside from a supporting character ending up not being as nice as I had thought they were. )

If you want a cozy read that feels like autumn, this book is a great choice. I've never read the original novel of Practical Magic but this book gives me the same comfortable vibes that I would get when I watched that movie.

I’ve got three words for this book: cozy, funny, quirky. I honestly enjoyed reading every page, as it was refreshing and unlike any other book I’ve ever read before! There’s a strong message in there as well, which I loved, and the characters really spoke to me.

Also, Ralph. Go read the book and fall in love with Ralph. (Yet not for romantic reasons lol)

I cannot recommend Cackle enough to anyone who’s looking for a cozy, witchy read!
