Alexander Vasudevan is an Associate Professor of Human Geography at Oxford University. He is the author of Metropolitan Preoccupations. His work has been published in several prestigious journals and he has also written for the Guardian, and openDemocracy.

This is a fine book if you are looking for a partisan history of the squatters' movement in various cities across the world. It does not, however, shed much on light why non-squatters respond to squatters the way they often do. Nor for that matter does it reveal much about the differences and psychologies of squatters themselves: they are presented here as a homogenous group of wholly virtuous and selfless activists against tyrannical states. For a more human and nuanced look at the squatters movement (albeit only in The Netherlands), I would recommend 'The Autonomous Life?' by Nazima Kadir. It is thoughtful, very well written, and contains many first-hand accounts.
