After the conquest of the South Pole by Amundsen, who, by a narrow margin of days only, was in advance of the British Expedition under Scott, there remained but one great main object of Antarctic journeyings—the crossing of the South Polar continent from sea to sea. When I returned from the Nimrod Expedition on which we had to turn back from our attempt to plant the British flag on the South Pole, being beaten by stress of circumstances within ninety-seven miles of our goal, my mind turned to the crossing of the continent, for I was morally certain that either Amundsen or Scott would reach the Pole on our own route or a parallel one. After hearing of the Norwegian success I began to make preparations to start a last great journey—so that the first crossing of the last continent should be achieved by a British Expedition. We failed in this object, but the story of our attempt is the subject for the following pages, and I think that though failure in the actual accomplishment must be recorded, there are chapters in this book of high adventure, strenuous days, lonely nights, unique experiences, and, above all, records of unflinching determination, supreme loyalty, and generous self-sacrifice on the part of my men which, even in these days that have witnessed the sacrifices of nations and regardlessness of self on the part of individuals, still will be of interest to readers who now turn gladly from the red horror of war and the strain of the last five years to read, perhaps with more understanding minds, the tale of the White Warfare of the South. The struggles, the disappointments, and the endurance of this small party of Britishers, hidden away for nearly two years in the fastnesses of the Polar ice, striving to carry out the ordained task and ignorant of the crises through which the world was passing, make a story which is unique in the history of Antarctic exploration.

A very well written account of the greatest Antarctic survival story in history. Sir Ernest Shackleton was an intelligent, resourceful leader of men who through a series of incredibly unfortunate events, followed by equally incredibly fortunate events, brought all 28 stranded members of his 1914-1917 expedition to cross the Antarctic continent safety home. His 800 Nm voyage, with 5 other crewmen, across the southern ocean in a 21' long open cutter to reach civilization at the whaling station in South Georgia Island is perhaps the most heralded rescue voyage ever attempted.

Excellent book, especially for the time it was written in. The reason that I took off a star was because the last part of the book after South Georgia is difficult to read which is about the other part of the expedition which did succeed. Endurance by Alfred Lansing details the extreme hardship that Shackleton and his men went through. I actually thought it was a better story of this unbelievable expedition.

A concise recollection of the harrowing experience of a group of common men who portrayed heroic behavior in the most unfathomable situation. This part of the globe was totally unknown to humanity at the time but these men undertook the challenge of discovery. It is hard to imagine anyone in today's age doing anything so daring. What is left? The whole globe is mapped by satellite, man has walked on the moon. These brave men were true heroes who managed to survive unthinkable hardships. Let's not forget just how helpless we all are without the technology available to us today.

This is a real lesson in history that I forgot from my high school days. Shows the courage and integrity of a man who would not let any man in his expedition be left behind. He lead every part of the expedition and rescue. In hind sight we can all say they should have done things differently but this is how we found out what to do and what not to do. They accomplished a lot of scientific and geographic work even if they did not reach their destination.

Hard to read all the details of the explorers struggles repeatedly, but do not know of any other way author could explain it. Not an enjoyable book to read, but a good reference to understanding the Antarctica continent.

For anyone interested in early arctic exploration this is an excellent read and Shackleton's journal's
account is confirmed independently by many of those men who accompanied him or were involved
in the later rescues. There is nothing to compare their bravery and thirst for knowledge to today, even
our space exploration is controlled by technology and not the astronauts, not to lightly pass on
their bravery but the arctic explorers were true men as attested to in their writings and wonderful
photographs that are so wonderfully portrayed in South.

The first hand story of an amazing survival story based on Shackleton's memory and journals (his and others). I actually found it helpful to read both this book and the one by Alfred Lansing - "Endurance:Shackleton's Incredible Voyage" to get a complete picture. Lansing includes much more detail from the other participants' journals as well as personal interviews with some of the survivors. But, to get the first hand account of one who was actually there this book by Shackleton is wonderful.

Another great story of human perseverence. I enjoyed it and found it interesting to plot the many Lat Long co-ordinates given in the story on a globe to get a feel for the distances involved.
But then again any Shackleton trek is great.

One of the best books I've ever read. Bought the Kindle version. This is the catalogue of events for heroic treks and survival across Antarctica. Men, dogs, mutual support across both human and dog teams; amazing endurance by ships in the ice, etc., etc. A must read.

A really interesting account and insight into the lives and experiences of these brave and enduring men. Some may find the initial few chapters tedious , eg. The ships movement back and forth in the ice but it does demonstrate just how much and for how long these men and dogs endured.
