This celebrated classic gives a soldier's-eye-view of the Guadalcanal battles--crucial to World War II, the war that continues to fascinate us all, and to military history in general. Unlike some of those on Guadalcanal in the fall of 1942, Richard Tregaskis volunteered to be there. An on-location news correspondent (at the time, one of only two on Guadalcanal), he lived alongside the soldiers: sleeping on the ground--only to be awoken by air raids--eating the sometimes meager rations, and braving some of the most dangerous battlefields of World War II. He more than once narrowly escaped the enemy's fire, and so we have this incisive and exciting inside account of the groundbreaking initial landing of U.S. troops on Guadalcanal.

With a new Introduction by Mark Bowden--renowned journalist and author of Black Hawk Down--this edition of Guadalcanal Diary makes available once more one of the most important American works of the war.

Amazon.com Review

In the summer and fall of 1942, American Marines landed on the South Pacific island of Guadalcanal and began the slow, bloody work of defeating the Japanese empire. Their landing was significant not only for the outcome of World War II, but also for the conduct of war ever since, for the invasion of Guadalcanal marked the first time that a combined air, sea, and land assault had ever been attempted. It is for that reason that tacticians and military historians study the months-long battle today, and their primary guide to that conflict is Richard Tregaskis's extraordinary Guadalcanal Diary.

A volunteer combat correspondent, Tregaskis braved much danger to bring the story of the fighting to American readers. But he was not one to celebrate his own exploits, and in the pages of his book, he centers on the brave young men from all over the United States who fought and died in appalling numbers. His attention to detail yields arresting descriptions of attacks and counterattacks, of moments of low morale and of exaltation, of moments of quiet behind the lines and of sheer terror at the very point of engagement. Tregaskis's style is unadorned and matter-of-fact, and his present-tense narrative places the reader in the thick of the battle during those "hopeless weeks."

The direct literary ancestor of books of military reportage such as Mark Bowden's Black Hawk Down and Michael Herr's Dispatches, Guadalcanal Diary is an exemplary work of journalism, and as vivid a portrait of men under fire as has ever been committed to print. --Gregory McNamee

"A superb example of war reporting at its best."

The author describes his experiences as to what he heard and saw each day on Guadacanal. Some of the things he wrote about the bombings I wondered how in the world did they make it through that. It’s an enjoyable read. He uses words that were used back in the 40s to describe certain people and things that we don’t necessarily use today, but I like the fact that it’s written in his own words. If you’re like World War II history, I think you’ll really enjoy this book.

Got this as a gift for my cousin who loves WWII and Vietnam era non-fiction work. I remember reading this when I was younger as well as hearing about it in USMC boot camp, so I figured it would be a good read for him too.

Tregaskis did a very nice job on this--setting the standard for modern war correspondents. This book covers just the first two months of the Guadalcanal Campaign. Tregaskis was 26 at the time, Like a lot of folks on Guadalcanal, he was eventually evacuated when he got sick. He kept copious notes as the covered the campaign--making sure to note the hometown of every enlisted man or officer he talked to (the folks back home in Muleshoe Missouri would certainly like to hear that Billy Smith did this or that on Guadalcanal). He started to write this book while he was being flown from Espiritu Santu to Pearl Harbor for further medical treatment. When he got to Pearl Harbor the Navy took his notes--classified information after all--but let him continue to write the book in a secure room during the day. He sent his first draft to Bennett Cerf expecting that it would need further editing before being published. Cerf wrote back--"Your draft will be published as the next Book of The Month club selection!" And so it was.

Tregaskis went on to cover the war in Italy (where he received a head wound that left a metal plate in his head) the push out from Normandy, Korea, and Viet Nam.

His personal story is also interesting. He was 6 feet six or seven; rail thin; a diabetic who carried some early instructions on diabetic treatment in his knapsack on Guadalcanal. He had to eat a lot to maintain his weight--tough to do on Guadalcanal in the early going; he had a size fourteen foot--tough to get boots that size in the USMC supply chain in 1942.

While not a history buff, I purchased "Guadalcanal Diary" with two other autobiographical accounts of WWII in the Pacific theater, after having watched the HBO miniseries "The Pacific" not long before, I was interested to read the books from which much of the miniseries' action sequences were taken. I felt reading this book would help my overall understanding of what war in the Pacific was like for those who lived, fought and often died there. "Guadalcanal Diary" did not disappoint. Richard Tregaskis provides and very good recitation of what transpired during that period from July to September in 1942. Tregaskis was true to the events and the people he met while participating as a correspondent in the action the occurred during the months he spent on Guadalcanal. Reading "Guadalcanal Diary" one experiences the feeling the marines sailors and soldiers must have felt at what had to seem a never-ending succession of patrols, bombings and battles in an attempt to secure the island. However, I will also say that Tregaskis' narrative lacks a bit of the sense of frustration, futility, trepidation and desperation in a book like "With the Old Breed" by E. B. Sledge. Still, it was a very good narrative. On the purely functional side, I was quite disappointed to find that even with the gentleness with which I treat all paperback books, the spine of the book broke at the last 20 pages or so, before I even had a chance to turn to them. I'm passing this book along to one of my brothers and I imagine the last pages will likely fall out while he is reading the book, as they were near falling out for me. For that reason I could only give the book four stars.

....it's a diary. It's not a history book, not a tactical analysis, not a glorification of war, nor a protest against it. It's one man's account from his perspective alone. That said, the author was involved in the capacity of correspondent so the writing is clear, informant, and even waxes poetic a time or two.

I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in American operations in the Pacific during World War II.

Definitely a classic. The low key reporting of the reality of the battle was much different from the high drama and colour of today's war reporting and stories. I highly recommend this for all of it's historical value..
