Never Seduce a Scot: The Montgomerys and Armstrongs Mass Market Paperback – September 25, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
Eveline Armstrong is fiercely loved and protected by her powerful clan, but outsiders consider her “touched.” Beautiful, fey, with a level, intent gaze, she doesn’t speak. No one, not even her family, knows that she cannot hear. Content with her life of seclusion, Eveline has taught herself to read lips and allows the outside world to view her as daft. But when an arranged marriage into a rival clan makes Graeme Montgomery her husband, Eveline accepts her duty—unprepared for the delights to come. Graeme is a rugged warrior with a voice so deep and powerful that his new bride can hear it, and hands and kisses so tender and skilled that he stirs her deepest passions.
Graeme is intrigued by the mysterious Eveline, whose silent lips are ripe with temptation and whose bright, intelligent eyes can see into his soul. As intimacy deepens, he learns her secret. But when clan rivalries and dark deeds threaten the wife he has only begun to cherish, the Scottish warrior will move heaven and earth to save the woman who has awakened his heart to the beautiful song of a rare and magical love.

Graeme Montgomery stared grimly back at his brother, unable to formulate a response for the growing rage in his chest. The king’s messenger had departed and was even now riding beyond the Montgomery border. Graeme had made sure of it. He felt deeply betrayed by his king and wanted no representative of the crown on his lands for a second longer.
“She’s but a child,” Bowen said in disgust. “And she’s . . . she’s . . . well, everyone knows she isn’t right. What the hell are you supposed to do with her, Graeme?”
Graeme held up his hand for silence and his fi ngers trembled, betraying his fury. He turned and stalked away from his brother, needing the distance and solitude to take in the magnitude of what had just been done to him. To his clan.
His king hadn’t just made a simple decree of marriage in an effort to halt hostilities between two feuding clans. He’d effectively chosen to end Graeme’s chance to pass the mantle of leadership on to his heirs.
Because there wouldn’t be any.
It would all end with Graeme.
With no sons to become laird, it would be up to one of his brothers—Bowen or Teague—to assume the role and provide heirs so that the Montgomery name would be carried into the future. His clan might even decide that one of his brothers would be a better choice for laird simply because he would be in a position of having a wife who couldn’t assume her role in the clan and he wouldn’t be able to sire children.
What a damnable mess the whole thing was.
How could his liege have done this? Surely he understood the future he was consigning Graeme to.
He paced into the small antechamber down the narrow hallway from the great hall. The room was darkened, the furs not yet thrown back from the windows. He chose to leave them covered and instead lit a candle from one of the wall sconces in the hallway.
The glow from the candle did little to illuminate the room, but he found his way to the sturdy table where his da had sat many a night scratching his quill over ledgers. The old laird had been a tightfisted, scrutinizing man who held into account every thing of value owned by the clan.
But he had a heart the size of a mountain and he was fair and equal with his clan. He made sure everyone had what they needed. All were clothed and no one went hungry even if it meant he, himself, went without.
Graeme missed him every single day.
He sank heavily into the gnarled chair and ran his hands over the aged wood, almost as if he could feel the essence of his father in this very room.
Marriage. To an Armstrong. It didn’t bear thinking about.
And then there was Bowen with all his babbling about the girl being daft. Graeme hadn’t ever paid much heed to the rumors about the lass being touched. It hadn’t concerned him. Not until now. It was widely known that something was off about the girl and that the Armstrong clan had closed ranks around her.
She’d even been betrothed before, to the McHugh whelp. The McHugh chieftain coveted an alliance with the Armstrongs, because once allied with them, he became a force to be reckoned with. There was no love lost between the Montgomerys and McHughs. The McHughs were every bit as culpable in the death of Graeme’s father, but Graeme knew who’d been directly responsible. And so it was the Armstrongs who were most deserving of his hatred.
He hadn’t been sorry that the betrothal had been dissolved and that the two clans weren’t formally bound by marriage. The Armstrongs weren’t quick to ally themselves with neighboring clans. They didn’t need to. They were a powerful enough force that unless many other clans stood against them, they would be assured a victory in battle.
Tavis Armstrong was just as his father was before him. Mistrustful of treaties and promises. He gave no one opportunity to betray him and he trusted his clan’s welfare to no one save himself.
If they weren’t such bitter enemies, Graeme could almost respect the vigor with which Tavis wielded his power and the fact that he relied on no one for support.
Once the betrothal had been dissolved between the Armstrong daughter and McHugh’s son, not much else was said, other than the occasional murmurs that called into question the lass’s state of mind. Since the Armstrongs weren’t exactly a social clan, and they most definitely held to their own, not much escaped about the only daughter.
No, Graeme wasn’t sorry that the marriage hadn’t taken place. He knew that McHugh would use his position with Armstrong to feed the fury against the Montgomerys. McHugh wanted more land, more power, and the Montgomery holding was a thorn in his side because they had him boxed in to the north.
But now he was going to be saddled with a woman he knew next to nothing about? It was bad enough she was addled and couldn’t perform as a wife, but she was an Armstrong, which meant no matter if she was the most perfect woman in all of the highlands, Graeme wanted nothing to do with her.
When he married, it would be to a lass of his own clan. He’d never marry someone who would bring danger, anger, and dissension to his people. And Eveline Armstrong would certainly do just that.
“Graeme?”
The small whisper came from the doorway, and some of his anger and tension fl ed as his sister, Rorie, peered in, her expression anxious.
“What is it, sweeting?” he asked, motioning her forward.
Rorie was fifteen winters, but she was behind most other lasses her age. While most had found their womanly shapes and had grown breasts, Rorie was still thin and slight, and were it not for her startling beautiful green eyes and the delicate femininity of her face, she could well pass for a lad.
With three older brothers, one would think she would have grown up able to take on anything, but she was extremely shy, quieter than any lass of his acquaintance. Except around him and his brothers. With them she was bossy, demanding, and impish. She mostly avoided the rest of the clan and preferred to go her own way.
“Is it true what Bowen said?”
She was but a few feet away now, standing in front of the table where he sat, his hands still clenched into fists as they rested on the wooden surface.
“Are you marrying an Armstrong?”
He searched her expression for fear because he’d do anything to soothe her worries. Losing their father had been especially difficult for her because she had been his da’s treasure. She more than any of them viewed the Armstrongs as monsters.
But all he saw was a troubled, worried look in her expressive eyes.
“’Tis what the king has decreed.”
She frowned. “But why? Why would he do such a thing?”
“It’s not your place to question his dictates,” he said with no heat. He couldn’t reprimand her for such a lack of respect when he himself questioned the very thing.
“They killed Da,” she said emphatically. “How can there ever be peace between us? How could the king believe that forcing a marriage between you and one of them would solve anything?”
“Shhh,” he said gently. “Enough, Rorie. We’ve been summoned to the Armstrongs and there we’ll go.”
Her look of horror was instantaneous. “Go there? To their lands? Where they could kill us all? Why can’t they come here? Why are we the ones who must sacrifice everything? Have they done something to gain the king’s favor?”
For a moment Graeme smiled, finding amusement in her statement. “It’s not likely they feel that handing their daughter over to me in marriage is the result of gaining his favor. I doubt they have any more liking for the matter than we do.”
“ ’Tis said she’s touched,” Rorie asserted.
Graeme sighed. “I guess we’ll fi nd out at the wedding, now won’t we?”
Just then, Teague’s bellow could be heard down the hallway. “Graeme! God’s teeth, where are you?”
Graeme sighed again. Rorie spared a slight smile and turned just as Teague burst through the door, sweat and blood caked on his body.
“Tell me it isn’t true,” Teague spat.
“You left training to ask if what Bowen told you was truth?” Graeme asked. “Are you suggesting he would lie to you and that you should leave your duties to question me on such a thing?”
Teague scowled and started to say something, but stopped, only just now realizing Rorie was in attendance. He clamped his lips shut, then glanced down at the blood covering him
Rorie was . . . well, she was different. To most of the women of their clan, blood, violence, battle . . . It was all a way of life. As normal as eating and sleeping. But Rorie was sensitive to such things. The sight of blood made her go pale, and she hated to hear any sounds of pain or violence.

Graeme became the laird of the Montgomery clan when his father was murdered by the Armstrongs; the Armstrongs maintain that they were retaliating against a wrongful death of their kin... and on and on. The Hatfields and McCoys had a bromance going on compared to the level of hate these two clans have for each other, and the king has had enough. Now that he has secured his rule, he needs to stop infighting between clans, especially his two strongest who have been at each other for generations. What better way to bring families together than a marriage? At least that's what he hopes will finally bring an end to the bordering clans' hatefest. And since Graeme has not yet wed, the king decrees that he is to wed the only daughter of the Armstrongs: Eveline.
The king's messenger could not get away fast enough after having to deliver those edicts as both families were in an uproar upon hearing the news. The Montgomery laird feels betrayed by his king to be saddled with a wife who cannot truly ever be a wife as she the rumors are that she is "defective" and "touched." The Armstrongs are devastated that their only precious daughter is being sacrificed to their most hated enemy --- how will she possibly survive in such circumstances given her afflictions? Though either side is loathe to carry out the king's orders, they know that they must, or they will become enemies of the kingdom and sacrifice the well-being their entire clans in doing so.
Eveline is not all that she seems.... Three years ago, she ran away from her home as she was being forced to wed a man (Ian McHugh) who tormented her with all the terrible things he planned to do to her once they were wed. Her family believed that she was just nervous about getting married, and no matter how much she insisted that wasn't the case, she was ignored as her fiance played the perfect gentleman in front of her parents and brothers. In fleeing her fate, she was thrown from her horse into a deep gorge and remained there for several days until one of her brothers finally found her very near death. Because of the injuries she sustained, she lost her hearing; she also stopped talking (voluntarily); thus, many believe her to be mad. She did not corrected this misconception as it allowed her to be released from her marriage contract, and if she were to show that she was not afflicted, she would be forced to marry the monster she knows Ian to truly be. Now she has no choice but to marry as the king decrees.... One look at Graeme, though, and she suddenly has no fear. Even better, his voice is such a deep timber that she can actually hear something when he speaks.
Graeme doesn't know what to make of the slip of a lass he encounters when he arrives to claim the bride that has been forced upon him. First of all, she is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Secondly, she completely breaks decorum by approaching him and grabbing his arm when she first meets him. Third, when he retires for the evening before his wedding, he finds Eveline sitting on his bed waiting for him --- and she keeps gesturing at him like she wants him to talk? But most puzzling of all is when he looks into her eyes and sees the intelligence there, it just doesn't add up to what he has been told about her being "touched in the mind." How can she seem so with it one moment and then oblivious the next? And how can he be so attracted to a woman he can never really have? Will Eveline be able to be her true self with Graeme? And will the Montgomery clan who has sworn to hate their bitter rival ever accept an Armstrong as one of them?
What I liked:
--- The story was great - there was pretty much everything in it: love, drama, danger, etc.
--- The main characters were very likeable, and the H was definitely swoon-worthy
--- Eveline's "condition" could have been used longer in the story to draw out that angst, but the author didn't do that, which I GREATLY appreciated (unnecessary angst is a major pet peeve of mine)
--- The kinds of stories I like best are the "us against the world" where the couple is together most of the book, battling external elements, and that is what happened here after about the halfway point
What I didn't like as much:
--- This sounds terrible, and maybe it's my own cynicism talking here, but Graeme was a little too good to be true - he immediately accepted Eveline, let her do whatever she wanted, and went to bat for her whenever anyone slighted her - seems a little over the top when he was originally so enraged that he was being forced to marry a woman not of his choosing
--- I could have used a more steam
Overall, a wonderful story with elements of danger, family drama, and love!
Plot --- 5/5
Main Characters --- 4.5/5
Supporting Cast --- 4.5/5
Steam Level* --- 3.5/5
Violence --- nothing graphic
Language --- not egregious
POV --- 3rd
*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild; 2/5 - sensual but nothing descriptive; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere; 4/5 - yes please! ; 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all
Though I plain do not like to read about a heroine who is physically impaired in some way, and who does not at least, recover by the end of the story, I still bought this book knowing (by the reviews I read) that she would not ever hear again, I did it, because I was so intrigue by the description of the hero. And yes I did enjoy my read, but I still so desperately wished she had regained her hearing. This genre to me is all about the fantasy without any relation to real life, and in my fantasy I like for the heroine to be whole. Some examples from this book to follow, to make my case that this book does not resemble real life in the least: 1) a hero who is forced to marry, but plans to be faithful to her none the less, even though he has no intention of ever consumating the union, 2) A heroine who is all forgiveness, 3) A love more perfect than a fairy tale, 4) Nora becoming devoted to the heroine, 5) A long and bitter blood feud comes to an end in a very short period of time, 6) The clans not only beccome allys but friends as well. And is not just the hero who lets by gone be by gone (after all he is in love with the heroine), his brothers do as well. Don't get me wrong I completely loved all the above mentioned elements, that is why I liked the story so much. But there is no reality in such elements, why could the fantasy read not extend to the recovery of the heroine? But I guess this series is about whole, fine looking men, paired with heroines who are tragically and physically impaired. After all one of the heroine is lame, the other has a terrible scarred face, and Eveline is of course deaf. Not my kind of series.

🌶️🌶️.5/5.
Loved this! I loved Graeme and level headed he was. I knew how to separate the fact that he hated the Armstrong family and the fact that his wife was a Armstrong too but had no part in why he hated her family. I loved how he treated her. He didn't take her for granted and he always made the effort to understand and communicate with her. He didn't matter to him if she was daft or not, she was his wife now and he would treated her as such.
I loved how much effort he put in trying to make his wife happy and accommodate her. He didn't got it right every time but i appreciated the fact that he always tried to make it better for her.
Eveline was amazing. I loved her personality. I loved the way Maya described Eveline's interactions with people, i felt like i understood her too and she didn't wasn't speaking but gesturing. I loved how some interactions was funny and i loved how she and Graeme's sister got along so well. Even his brothers were a delight once they got into their heads that she was an amazing and she should be treated as such.
I wasn't expecting the tumultuous last part of the book but it made sense once i remember again that Ian was mentioned a lot in the beginning so it shouldn't have been a surprise to me. I loved how everyone, Armstrong and Montgomery, came together as one to rescue Eveline. I loved how revenge and hatred was forgotten because there was something much valuable in play than get revenge. Love conquers all.
I really hope there is more books coming in this series.
I can't tell you how much I loved this novel.
Ok, I'm quite biased. When I find in the plot a Scottish setting (and obviously with Highlanders ;)), a main character beautiful but fragile due to a physical problem (in this case the deafness), a war between clans and a Laird proud but tender ... ok , you already know! I melt in a puddle.
And if the expectations are not only met ...but more! What can I say?
Only this last thing, it made me cry. At some point in the story ... you know, when you empathize so much that emotions flow uncontrolled and you find yourself crying like a fool. Here you are.
Surely my first approach to this author was very lucky (oh yeah! Centered in one shot! An uncommon luck seeing the last novels I read ;)) ... now I can't wait for the sequels. The second novel, Highlander Most Wanted will be released in February 2013 ... not so much to wait ... I can do it! ;)
Highlands
Peace has finally come to the highlands, King Alexander II can be pleased ... if not for one thing.
Two of his most powerful allies are at war with each other, but he can't allow the situation to continue. He needs a united, and ready to respond to his call, Scotland. Not a Scotland engaged in internal conflicts that cause the death of valuable men.
The solution? A wedding!
So, by royal decree, Eveline Armstrong -the "touched" daughter of the Laird - and Graeme Montgomery -Laird of his clan- find themselves betrothed with the order to cease immediately the hostilities.
Graeme 's pride is injured but he can't put in danger the whole clan for an egoistic feeling. So he meets the murderers of his father, to proceed with the marriage... though the anger burns every second much brighter: not only because he will become related to the people who hates from the cradle, but considering the rumors about his future wife, he cannot even hope in a normal marital life. In an heir.
On the other hand Eveline, who for some time had resigned herself to a meaningless life, is probably the only one who hasn't so many bad thoughts for the upcoming event. Immediately after the incident that brought her from a normal life to one without sound, Evie (for a reason I can't tell you or I will spoil your reading ;)) thought it was better to pretend to be mindless. And she learned to read lips in order to didn't feel totally unrelated to the world around her.
Now, this wedding presents the opportunity to begin a new life, where she will build her own family.
It's true, the difficulties that lie ahead are so many! Away from a family that loves her, in an hostile clan, without friends...
But the first meeting with her future husband present many fascinations and hopefully an interesting future for they both.
I dare not tell you more, infact I have already said too much ... read the novel, if you like as much as me a romance novel of this kind I'm also sure you will love Never Seduce a Scot!

The heroine Eveline Armstrong is badly disabled in a riding accident. Despite this the Scottish King forces her to marry the chief of a warring clan, Graeme Montgomery. The hatred between the Armstrongs and Mongomerys is intense and Eveline is bullied by her new clan. But her husband shows her so much kindness and consideration that she entrusts him with a secret she has hidden for 3 years.
Eveline's courage and vulnerability make her a really engaging character. I like that she doesn't melt the hearts of her new clan as would happen in most HR novels. The prejudice and resentment she faces feels more realistic. Eveline is also brave. Despite being so very vulnerable, a hated stranger and unable to speak, she refuses to be sidelined by her new husband. As a reader I was on her side all the way through to the satisfying end.
Long, long, long ago two clans , Montgomerys and Armstrong, started to hate each other, that hate continued throughout MANY years ( 100 to 200). Until they finally reached the limit where they would stop at nothing to kill one another, and their hate for each other slowly became their addiction. The king of Scotland got sick of their fighting, because both clans were very loyal and they both had huge armies. He didn't want to risk them, so he decided to arrange marriage between the two families ( the leaders children) hoping it would sort the conflict between them. The clans had to follow the demand because if they wouldn't it would show disloyalty towards the king. Never Seduce a Scot is about a girl named Eveline Armstrong, who everyone thinks of as ' touched', stupid or crazy. She doesn't speak. No one knows the truth about what truly is wrong with her. She isn't prepared to get married and she never thought she would because of her condition, and as much as her family supports her in that matter, they all have no choice but to marry her of to Graeme ( Montgomerys leader). They know that Montgomerys and Armstrongs don't mix, and that it might end in disaster. Graeme is so not happy about it, but soon finds himself irresistibly drawn to Eviline. As intimacy deepens, he learns her secret. But as a foreign source threaten the wife he has only began to cherish, the Scottich warrior will move heaven to save the woman who awakened his heart to a rare and magical love.
OMG!!! I L-O-V-E-D THIS BOOK!
The characters were so awesome and realistic! They were very well developed.
Eveline was such a beautiful character to read about. And can i just say - i totally love her name. She was very strong and never gave up without a fight.
Graeme was kind, nice and understanding. The way he treated Eveline and the things he said to her made my heart melt. He was so sweet! And his love for her was pure.
I loved Graemes sister, she was such an epic and interesting character to read about.
I just ADORED Evelines and Graemes brothers, they rocked!
Evelines and Graemes relationship wasn't rushed, but wasn't slow either. It was just right. I love how at first they didn't like each other but then that feeling turned into love. There was MANY romantic and sweet scenes between them that just made me go " AWWWWWW!"
This wasn't the first book i read by Maya Banks, but it was the first in historical romance genre. Maya Banks is such a great author!
The beginning, when Eveline was moving into Montgomerys clan, was so freaking hilarious.
In the middle i felt a bit upset and my heart was aching for Eveline because of the things she had to go through.
The ending had me on edge. I can not wait to read book 2!
Overall, Never Seduce a Scot is a wonderfully written book that will make your heart melt. I think it's one of the most sweetest books i have read so far. Definitely worth the money and time.
