- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2024I was thrilled to see in the other reviews that other people have reread it multiple times as I have over the past 60, yes 60 years. I first read it at my grandmother’s house when I was 10 years old and she gave me the book to keep. It was a treasure to me that I had to replace a couple of times over 60 years after losing the original and other copies I had but I have it now again. I can honestly say that this still remains my favorite read of all my time!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2025I had read this novel many years ago and reread it now, getting the same pleasure as before. It is a love story, but it is filled with hard times as well as joyful, with funny times woven in.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2024Exciting story of the wild Northern Canadian forests and the people who settled there. A hard, rugged life filled with loss as well as love and family.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2024I first read this when I was 15 years old in the 1960’s for English class. It touched me as much now as it did all those years ago. I am great full to find it once again.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2024Read this story as a teen and reread it now. One of the best stories ever written.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2013Mrs. Mike was chosen for the Lit-Chix's Classic read for 2013. I was excited to read this book due to the amazing reviews and personal recommendations. It is a love story, one that by today's standards would have never lasted.
It is well written but at some points very slow. It felt as though the story was historically accurate and during those slow times it was probably very much so for the characters living it. The courage that it would take for a young, Boston girl to traverse to the wild, frigid frontier is somewhat unrealistic but never say never.
I did learn some about the Indian customs and the frontiers way of life and found it to be very interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2022I read this story in the ‘50s and loved it. It made a deep impression on me and helped shape my journey into adulthood. I reread it for my book club. It was just as impressive this time. The character and heart of Katherine and Mike Flannigan exude honesty, loyalty, love and respect for each other. One caveat to readers; it portrays the times vividly, including the racism toward Native peoples. I was shocked by that because I didn’t remember that part of the story. However, it is accurately portrayed and if one stays with the story, one will find it would be dishonest to have it any other way. The Freedmans are excellent storytellers who bring the best of stories and storytelling to light and print.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2013“Mrs. Mike” is a true story recounting the early years of Katherine “Kathy” Mary O’Fallon, a 16 year old girl from Boston who marries Mike Flannigan, a Canadian Mounted Ranger. What makes the story interesting is the setting in Northwest Canada in the early 1900’s. The weather and land placed severe hardships on the Flannigan’s to the point of breaking, but it was also something beautiful to Kathy in her young married life.
People living in those times and especially in those rugged conditions formed a close-knit community that took care of each other. This became an important part of the story as the book takes the reader through multiple events in Kathy’s marriage. There were moments of happiness as well as sadness, and it was heartwarming to see how the young couple endured.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. The writing style jumped around a bit at times where the author would include some anecdote and then fast forward several months ahead. I found that a bit jarring at times, but I think it was important to understand how the people’s paths crossed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific insight to how life was.
A well researched and written book. A terrific insight to remind us all of what hardships, loss and determination to keep going that pioneers experienced. Life was hard, life was joyful and people were creative with what they had. Look forward to reading the next book in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A charming love story
I first read this book decades ago as a teenager and always felt bereft that I mislaid my copy. A recent re-read did not disappoint. It is a charming account of a young woman's life in the most remote area of Canada with her Mounty husband. It will thrill you, interest you and then grieve you but to me remain an interesting read for a wide age range.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly suprised :)
When I first decided to read this book I was a little nervous it would turn out much more Romance than Historical Fiction and that I wouldn't enjoy it. Partly because of the description given about the book. However I decided to give it a go and I am so glad I did!
Whilst Romance or Love is one of the themes in this book (but it is in most books if i'm honest) - its not the kind of love that you see in blockbuster romantic comedy films, but real love, which is hard work. The theme isn't so much love, but life which happens to have love in it, but much more also.
I also worried that because of the period the book was written in, and the concept of a city girl falling for a rugged Mountie, the character of Katherine Mary would be weak, or helpless - requiring a man to help her through. But she isn't. She is just real. Her relationship with Mike is shown as balanced. Also the character of Sarah is depicted as one of the strongest female characters I have read about and I loved her - She is Reminiscent of Sara from These Is My Words!
I think this book is such a triumph because it was written by both Benedict Freeman and Nancy Freeman, which provides not just one viewpoint of a relationship, which can often lead to a one sided understanding and incomplete depiction of a relationship, but a masterfully crafted relationship, with insights from both the male and female perspective

5.0 out of 5 stars Eine wunderbare Liebesgeschichte aus dem hohen Norden
