Editorial Reviews

Review

“It is the personality of Sgt. Mike blowing through this account like a clear breeze that gives it a refreshing quality. Everyone’s dream of a cop, he was also a romantic and understanding husband, the fondest of fathers; a man of honor and humor.”—New York Times

“This is a book the reader will be unable to put down until the last page is read.”—Library Journal

Mrs. Mike…is the story of the start of young love, its growth to maturity, and its acceptance of a dangerous, hard, but enthralling life. Its level of sheer entertainment is extremely high.”—Los Angeles Herald-Express

I was 13 the 1st time I read this book and I had a hard time getting through the beginning chapters. However, Once I got past those the book was wonderful! The story will make you laugh, cry, And rejoice with people you have never met. By the end, I needed a tissue to finish the book. I love this story and have read it several times since that initial reading... Highly highly recommended!

Exciting story of the wild Northern Canadian forests and the people who settled there. A hard, rugged life filled with loss as well as love and family.

A very sweet book that is well written and gives a good bit of history. While it does not claim to be an autobiography, there is a ring of truth to the story that is very appealing. Worth the read.

You cannot tell an honest story about the hashness of the far Northwest without seeing the brutal reality of that frozen world where there is little or no access to medicines. This story follows strong-willed 16 year old Katherine who is frail from pleurisy as she falls in love with sergeant Mike Flannigan of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Instead of killing her, the difficult conditions and challenges build her strength and character.

I have no idea why this book has so many high rated reviews. Okay, it's interesting but it's not what I would call a romance. I found this book to ultimately be kind of sad. Katherine and Mike, they meet and fall in love. Turns out she's young, but they marry and travel to the cold north. He does love her and takes great care of her. We read about their lives and toils. The way the author wrote about the characters and their experiences was very readable and interesting.
I don't and won't give away things, it's just there were certain twists and such made this book hard. It's definitely not a happy happy book. Oh, it has a hea. But, it's a hard, harsh book. There's love and kindness- but reflective of the harshness of real life.

I read this story in the ‘50s and loved it. It made a deep impression on me and helped shape my journey into adulthood. I reread it for my book club. It was just as impressive this time. The character and heart of Katherine and Mike Flannigan exude honesty, loyalty, love and respect for each other. One caveat to readers; it portrays the times vividly, including the racism toward Native peoples. I was shocked by that because I didn’t remember that part of the story. However, it is accurately portrayed and if one stays with the story, one will find it would be dishonest to have it any other way. The Freedmans are excellent storytellers who bring the best of stories and storytelling to light and print.

I read “Mrs. Mike” by Benedict and Nancy Freedman many years ago. It was first published in 1947, the year I was born. As a teenager, I read and re-read this book because it was such a beautiful love story.

It is the story of Mike Flannigan, Canadian Mounty, and Katherine Mary O’Fallon. Mary Katherine has been send to her uncle in Calgary, Alberta, Canada because of her health. She is introduced to the harshness of a Canadian winter straight away. Her introduction to Mike Flannigan was not an auspicious occasion, to say the least. Katherine Mary had a lot to learn in this harsh environment. She and Mike eventually became friends and fell in love. At sixteen years of age, Katherine Mary married Mike Flannigan and headed with him to Hudson’s Hope in the far north. What follows is a beautiful love story with all of the joys, trials, and heartache that are part of it.

I loved the book when I first read it, loved it the subsequent twenty times I read it, and now that it is in reprint, I love it more. The Freedman’s also wrote two sequels to “Mrs. Mike”, “The Search for Joyful” and “Kathy Little Bird”. I cannot wait to read them.

A well researched and written book. A terrific insight to remind us all of what hardships, loss and determination to keep going that pioneers experienced. Life was hard, life was joyful and people were creative with what they had. Look forward to reading the next book in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A charming love story
Reviewed in Australia on January 4, 2017
I first read this book decades ago as a teenager and always felt bereft that I mislaid my copy. A recent re-read did not disappoint. It is a charming account of a young woman's life in the most remote area of Canada with her Mounty husband. It will thrill you, interest you and then grieve you but to me remain an interesting read for a wide age range.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eine wunderbare Liebesgeschichte aus dem hohen Norden
Reviewed in Germany on December 4, 2013

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling reading
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 29, 2013
I have just finished this book. It was wonderful, well written, really got to the heart of the characters. The characters, and I know they were based on real people were well rounded, the description of the environment Kathy and Mike lived in was stunning. The story developed at such a pace you didn't realise where the time had slipped by. I was very much caught up with the whole situation of the essentially wilderness environment. The different people they lived alongside and the relationships that developed between them all.
Excellent read.
