For the first time in a generation, here is a bold new account of the Battle of the Marne, a cataclysmic encounter that prevented a quick German victory in World War I and changed the course of two wars and the world. With exclusive information based on newly unearthed documents, Holger H. Herwig re-creates the dramatic battle and reinterprets Germany’s aggressive “Schlieffen Plan” as a carefully crafted design to avoid a protracted war against superior coalitions. He paints a fresh portrait of the run-up to the Marne and puts in dazzling relief the Battle of the Marne itself: the French resolve to win, and the crucial lack of coordination between Germany’s First and Second Armies. Herwig also provides stunning cameos of all the important players, from Germany’s Chief of General Staff Helmuth von Moltke to his rival, France’s Joseph Joffre. Revelatory and riveting, this is the source on this seminal event.

The book begins examining the reasons to go to war,above all for Germany and the Absburg Empire, then analyzing the war plans of all the powers involved in this world war, including even a lot of "what if"s.
The author, then, follows the development of this huge conflict , on the Western Front, until the end of the battle of the Marne, analyzing, even on this case, a lot of very interesting "what if"s .
I don't want that from these words you can think that this is just a cold detailed research book about a battle, because, instead this book is full of first hand accounts coming from a lot of war diaries written by soldiers belogning to all the possible ranks, from private to general.
Even if this book is based mainly on german sources, this book is not onesided, indeed it includes even a complete list and description of the german crimes committed in Belgium, in thev first months of war.
The author thinks that this battle is the most important of the century because if the Germans had won it, it would not have happened the birth of the Nazism (the treaty of Versailles would not have existed) and of the Comunism ( winning at the Marne, the Germans would have defeated France, and so consequently even Russia, being, on this case , a nonsense to help Lenin to reach Russia).
The maps are excellent and for sure much better than many others found in other book about WWI.
A great research book with a great soul.

There have been precious few books just dealing with the Battle of the Marne in English since the end of WWI. This is perhaps the most definitive edition to date for the following reasons:

1) The Author uses previously unreleased (and unknown) material released from govt. and regimental archives in the former East Germany;
2) He therefore covers the initial campaign into France from a primarily German point of view (not the traditional French/English we have been used to);
3) He has a very good way of dealing decisively with pivotal events of the battle, in a way that banishes many preconcieved ideas, eg. The importance of the Taxis of the Marne, and the important decision by the Germans to "turn" their flank early inward, and their critical decision to withdraw from the Marne -- the time when German initiative was lost (well narrated I might add).

The Book is extremely good at getting into the heads of the senior German commanders in a way that I have rarely seen. Motivation is analysed and explained. These are not robots, but really men with deep senses of passion misson and conflict in the way they view the war, their relaitonship with their troops, and how they see the enemy. I enjoyed the book pretty much.

The few small problems I have with the book stem from such statements in the introduction, that the Battle of the Marne was the "most important battle of the 20th Century" -- I will not recount his argument since most people versed with even a little history would find this a little hard to swallow. Although he does force us to see the battle in a new and wholly significantly different way -- it was both the beginning and the end of the battle of movement, it was the end of the traditional regional German Army, it led to a loss of initiative which the Germans never regained, and thus they lost the way and (somehow related) WWII is a necessary outcome from this battle -- all of this is true in a certain sense, but to see the battle as the "cause" of events reaching far into the 20th Century is, I feel, a bit of a confusoin on what constitutes causation.

The Marne did determine events aftwards, but all battles do that to a degree or another. If the Germans were not turned on the Marne they would have been stopped somewhere else... In the end the aggregate grinding of battle demoralised the Germans and they lost the war (it is interesting to see the sometimes schizophrenic up and downs of the senior army commanders this early in the war). Surely in this sense it becomes difficult to localise a specific, one event, causation for the German loss of the war, especially so early in the conflict. The traditional interpretations usually focus on August 1918 as the day of reckoning for the German Army. I do not think that common sense position is challenged by the Authors thesis. It is interesting to note that the author only pushes this thesis in the prologue, and does not really return to it with papable force in his conclusion. Maybe he is making a grand statement at the beginning to get the sales numbers up....?

The book is usually told on unit actions at the Army Corps, Divisional and Brigade level. Although there is some narration of the individual combatants, there is precious few first-person accounts. This may leaven the book to a higher plain in academic circles, but it does deaden it to a degree that I removed one star.

Like most books of its ilk, the maps are next to useless, with the author knowingly citing places that are not to be found on his accompanying maps.

Finally, I am stimulated to read more of the action of the BEF. They were absolutely useless as the author describes in the events, and basically, wholely incidental from the battle, except in terms of their effect on German psychology.

I was impressed by the author's ability to weave together source material from English, French and German language sources. Too often English speaking historians limit their research to English language sources and a smattering of German or French accounts. Herwig has managed to combine these disparate (and sometimes contradictory) sources into an even-handed, comprehensive and seamless account of the Battle of the Frontiers, fighting in Belgium, and the first Battle of the Marne. While I have not been drawn to accounts of the First World War prior to this book, I am going to make it a point to keep an eye out for Herwig's work in the future. Highly recommended. One note - I do share the other reviewers concern about better maps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything a general reader need to know about the series of engagements that WW 1 kicked off with
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 16, 2021
It's important to do Justice to the unprecedented scale of and legacy of this battle. Essentially the Germans couldn't get through the allied armies and had to stop their attack. This book describes the complicated groups of attacking and opposing forces and how they came to end up in their final stalemate positions. It's strength is to explain the movements of the group's vis a vis each other and the enemy basically on a day by day basis. To my eyes it maybe overstates the hesitancy of the BEF's engagement and the slightness of their contribution. The maps are very unclear and should have started with a more detailed one of the basic geography especially the rivers, higher ground, and railways. I read it back to back with David Stevenson's 1914 to 1918 and they compliment each other well. Both give too little emphasis (speaking as a layman) to Germanys all out effort to stir up trouble to start with and their vision of the empire they wanted as portrayed by Fischer in his War Aims book.

Very careful and detailed account of the opening weeks of WWI, including many maps of changing positions throughout the period. This book is for someone who wants to dig down into the day-to-day tactical decisions that were made on both sides, with analysis of the successes and mistakes. The amount of research that had to be undertaken to present such a comprehensive narrative leaves me astonished. Having toured the battlefields of France and Belgium a 100 years after the events - a daunting experience even today - this book has helped me understand how the stage was set for the following four years of horrifying trench warfare.

Through the fog of 100 years of self serving partisan history only now are the facts being properly weighed up. I often wondered how arguably the best trained and equipped army in modern history could essentially lose the war in the first 6 weeks. Herwig dispassionately sets it out with wonderful clarity. It is depressing to yet again realise how great historical events swing on human personality vagaries.

And the maps!! At last a military history e-book with decent maps. Loved the web link that allowed a map to be viewed separate to the text. Only slight criticism is that if a locality is mentioned in the text it should be shown on the map.

The amount of research is staggering. I can understand why a casual reader might be put off by this book but if, like me, you are a serious student of the war, it is engrossing. I could not put it down until the last page.
