Purchase options and add-ons
This breathtaking journey along the most important rivers in the world takes us from the Nile to the Amazon, the Mekong Delta to the Mississippi, the Murray to the Waikato.
Our seas and rivers tell a compelling story about our planet. Through tracking the life source of people, animals and the land itself, Peter Goes brings alive our history and our lives today. Each illustration includes major events and historical figures connected with its river, but also favorite stories and icons. This absorbing, playful book shows who we are, how we live and the myths we weave around our people and places.

Update: I never looked much at this book until this week. We didn’t use it for the rivers project that my daughter was working on, but a year later, my son and I are reading through it nightly. He is a child who is very into maps and geography, so it is very interesting to him to be able to pick out different places in the contents section and read about something new. I’m still not the biggest fan of the layout—there is no ‘sequence’ of the reading so you don’t really know where to start or follow on to. The colours are also quite overpowering in some sections (the salmony-red of Spain and Portugal, for instance, is just hard to look at, as is a similar shade for the Yangtze in China). The book seems like a graphic novel without the boxes. Anyhow, my son seems to be really enjoying it. (He’s eight) It’s very educational. He is not the best at reading, however, and some of the words are pretty advanced for him, although I wouldn’t say the book is particularly advanced overall. Just bear in mind that despite the graphic novel feel, it’s not a book that your kids can sit and just read and understand with no input from an adult (unless they’re pretty clever!).
