Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—There have been a spate of long-distance grandparent books this year, but it will be hard to find one more visually charming than this one. With die-cut holes, and constant patter of reassuring monologue, the young narrator explains why he or she cannot be with the grandmother now but how "See you someday soon" are watch words. Until the end of the book, they are never occupying the same space but never more than a few pages and a peephole away. It's not just space and distance that separate them, but time—the parents have jobs and a lot going on, and the grandparent or relative that is so far away has a life, too, of cats, and flowers, procured or maybe gardened, and making dinner. The pacing of the journey—there is a hug at the end—is so quiet and steady, like the beating of a hopeful heart about to get its dearest wish. This book will win over readers at both ends of the age range with the promise of the title and the narrator's clear-eyed belief that "soon" is not a movable post. This will happen. VERDICT This is a title sturdy enough for sharing, and soothing for all who live far from loved ones, as well as a handbook for the myriad ways to stay in touch before and after those precious visits.—Kimberly Olson Fakih

Pat Zietlow Miller knew she wanted to be a writer ever since her seventh-grade English teacher read her paper about square-dancing skirts out loud in class and said: "This is the first time anything a student has written has given me chills." (Thanks, Mrs. Mueller! You rock!)

Pat started out as a newspaper reporter and wrote about everything from dartball and deer-hunting to diets and decoupage. Then, she joined an insurance company and edited its newsletter and magazine.

Now, she writes insurance information by day and children's books by night. Her first picture book, SOPHIE'S SQUASH, illustrated by Anne Wilsdorf was released in 2013 from Schwartz & Wade. It won the Golden Kite Award for picture book text from the SCBWI and was named a Charlotte Zolotow and an Ezra Jack Keats New Author honor book

Her second picture book, WHEREVER YOU GO, illustrated by Eliza Wheeler, was released by Little, Brown in 2015. That was followed by SHARING THE BREAD, illustrated by Jill McElmurry (Schwartz & Wade); THE QUICKEST KID IN CLARKSVILLE, illustrated by Frank Morrison (Chronicle) and SOPHIE'S SQUASH GO TO SCHOOL, illustrated by Anne Wilsdorf (Schwartz & Wade).

In 2018, New York Times bestselling BE KIND, illustrated by Jen Hill (Roaring Brook), WIDE-AWAKE BEAR illustrated by Jean Kim (HarperCollins) and LORETTA'S GIFT, illustrated by Alea Marley (Little Bee) were published. REMARKABLY YOU, illustrated by Patrice Barton (HarperCollins) and WHEN YOU ARE BRAVE, illustrated by Eliza Wheeler (Little, Brown) were published in 2019, and MY BROTHER, THE DUCK, illustrated by Daniel Wiseman (Chronicle) came out in 2020.

Pat has one wonderful husband, two delightful daughters and two pampered cats. She doesn't watch much TV, but she does love "Chopped." Pat lives in Madison, Wisconsin.

Great for families that have long distance relationships. I got this for my kids who only see there dad a few times a year. Would recommend for families to discuss when you will see loved ones next.

Such a sweet story about how we can connect with family even if they're miles and miles away instead of next door. Add this charming story to your bookshelf stat!

This story makes me tear up, since my kids live far from their grandma. It’s so well done.

A beautifully illustrated book with a poignant message.

Last February, something magical happened to me. I became a grandmother! I live in Illinois and my identical twin granddaughters live in NJ. We’ve seen each other a lot during the past eight months, but not it’s not nearly enough. The Grandmother in this story feels exactly the same, and her grandchild agrees. This precious story tells us how they are yearning to be together, though they “are very far apart.” We also learn how they creatively solve the problem until they can “see you someday soon”.

They can talk on the phone or even see each other on the computer. Grandmother can see how much they’ve grown and marvel at their excellent spelling test. They can see what she had for dinner or the flowers in her garden. And every conversation always closes with “see you someday soon.” Because hugging in person is so much better.

You can be certain this is going to be on my girls’ bookshelves. It captures the feelings between a grandparent and grandchildren perfectly. And we’re going to begin saying “see you someday soon.”

What a perfect story for capturing the feeling of living far away from family and missing them.

See You Someday Soon is a short children’s audiobook about a child imagining ways to see their grandma who lives far away. As an audiobook, you miss out on the pictures that go with the story, and I suspect this would make a better physical book than audiobook. The first half of the story was just OK, but the second half was more entertaining as the child used their imagination. I would recommend this book in paper format.

Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio ARC of this book.

This book is just gorgeous from start to finish, both in writing and art. The die cuts and illustrations, the kid-perfect, clever language, and the sweet connection throughout make it a must have for anyone who loves someone who lives out of reach.

    Positive: a very good book.
Negative: Non-fulfillment with the delivery date. This order was placed on 29/June/23, the expected delivery date was 12 July and 02 August, and arrived at 04/August. I contacted the seller, and the answer was that I should wait a few more days - this delay defrauded my expectations when buying. I do not recommend this seller.
