Hackworth (U.S. Army, ret.), author of the bestseller About Face

- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2014 Theodore Roosevelt is remembered today as one of the most dynamic and exciting presidents, the man who became a leading light of the Progressive Movement and helped America become a truly modern world power. As James Strock declares in Theodore Roosevelt on Leadership, “the overriding lesson of Theodore Roosevelt is that leadership is a way of life.” This book is both an efficient, finely-researched consideration of Roosevelt’s life and times and a broader meditation on the lessons of Roosevelt’s life and presidency. The guiding principles that Strock discovers explain why Roosevelt’s vision endures—and why leaders in our own time would do well to emulate Roosevelt himself.
Each chapter in Theodore Roosevelt on Leadership recounts episodes from Roosevelt’s career, and distills this information to generate useful, point-by-point leadership guidelines. “Ceasing to Be Afriaid”, “Always Learning”, and “Action, Action, and Still More Action” are a few of the themes that Strock has chosen. To provide a more standard survey of Roosevelt’s life, Strock has also provided a helpful timeline. But it may be best to wait on this until after you have read all the way through Roosevelt on Leadership: by the end of this book, you will feel that Roosevelt’s greatness has been reaffirmed, but will also understand that greatness in a new light.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2011In my experience, books on Leadership are either really bad or really good. TR on Leadership is really good mainly due to the way the author organized the material. There is a clear outline for each chapter, one point leading logically to the next. There is a clever publishing technique where a small gap between paragraphs indicates that you are about to begin a new topic. After the gap, a short, punchy sentence clearly states the next principle to be discussed. The other simple, yet elegant organizational technique is how Mr. Strock ended each chapter with a bulleted list of all of the leadership principles just described. These techniques helped me to retain the material better than most books that I read.
The author chose very interesting slices from the life of TR to illustrate his principles of leadership and, unlike other biographies or leadership books I've read, the illustrations truly illustrated the principle being discussed. The writing is vigourous and clear. I ordered the author's Leadership book on Reagan in part due to the skill of the author. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2010Mr. Strock, the author, again proves that he can glean the facts that create exemplary character and leadership ability. Jim Strock proves beyond a reasonable doubt that Theodore Roosevelt would have achieved great heights without the aid of the family wealth. It was Teddy's fortitude, courage and tenacity that propelled this great man. Mr. Strock has once again further established himself as a fine writer. I hope some day he turns his attention to fiction. Ted King

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2017Excellent work on leadership using one of as greatest presidents as a model. Well worth the read for leaders still learning.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2015Great read! Worth every dollar
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2023This book is good. Flat-out it is a solid piece of literature on the topic of leadership. It does a great job of breaking down aspects of Teddy Roosevelt’s leadership and what made him such an effective leader. The writing in this book is very strong. On the bad side however I believe that this author was much too enamored with President Roosevelt. He glossed over many of the controversial things to happen during Roosevelt time. Wether or not those belong in a book where the lense is aimed towards leadership is up for debate. Overall it was a very good book!
