so..so...

Janet Backhouse was a leading authority in this field (unfortunately she left us in 2004), but her many works about the illuminated manuscript are and will always be available to us.

This introduction is probably the best book to start if you are interested in delving into the beauty of the illuminated manuscript. Not only a gallery, but also an historical overview on how they were made, who made them (not only monks), what themes they covered, who bought them, what resources were needed, what happened with the introduction of printed books, etc.

Some limitations exist: many pages are in black and white, losing considerable impact and all the displayed manuscripts are from the British Library Houses (although there are examples from almost the entire Europe, there are some absences like Scandinavian or early medieval Spanish works...obviously in an introduction we can't expect to have full coverage).

The comments on each plate focus not only on the author (if known), the production place, the style and theme. You will get a fine step stone for further studies.

Covering a wide span of time and styles, from the Lindisfarne Gospels (Interlace, c 700) to Italian neo-classical revival in the early 1500s, this book provides a good overview of the subject. Written for the layman rather than the scholar, it nevertheless has an informative introduction on manuscript creation. Since there are examples from 70 manuscripts, descriptions of each are necessarily brief, but still interesting. It is a pity that not all the illlustrations are in colour, but there are still many good-quality colour plates at or near full-size.
This is definitely one to have on the shelf.

3.0 out of 5 stars For a smallish book, it's a good intro to the subject, but it has limitations. Decent for the price, though.

Illuminated manuscripts are a fascinating item, coming as they do pre-publishing when everything required genuine love and artistic skills to produce. As such, I've spent many hours poring over illuminated manuscripts in the UK, as well as a few in places like Germany. They are both works of art and extremely interesting content in most cases, and not always Bible-related, despite people's general understanding.

This is a shortish book (running 80 pages with everything counted) and isn't very large (about 8 inches square), but there's a lot of illustrations (although a mix of black and white and colour) packed into these pages. The manuscripts under examination range from early (circo late 600s) to the early 1500s, for the most part, and the illustrations of the different books are used by the accompanying text to go into the rise and nature of the subject. The text is quite well done, albeit brief

For the size of the book, and the limitations on the colour illustrations, the book is well done. Having said that, the short number of pages and smaller size, plus the inclusion of black-and-white illustrations instead of colour disappointed me more than I expected. I suppose considering the price of the book I should not complain, but I have several much-larger books on the same subject that do a much better job, albeit at a much higher price.

So, if you're looking for a light treatment of the subject, or intend to give the book to someone to get them interested, this may well be the initial dose of information and images you need. For an indepth analysis of illuminated manuscripts, though, I'm afraid it's disappointing.

I recently left a review on Isobel Hall's lovely book, I went on a course with the spine, she immediately replaced it and is taking the matter up with the publisher. The book is well worth buying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thin but informative

Quite pricey for what is a thin book, but well-written and very informative indeed. There are bigger & better books on the subject out there, even by the same author, that don't cost much more,
