- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2014The book definitely covers the details well, but lacks the "I don't want to put it down" factor.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2015This was an enjoyable book about what is often overlooked. The young boys who faced the same hardship and danger of being a soldier doing the civil war. His devotion to duty was as great as another other soldier and fulfilled a needed duty. I highly recommend this book
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2015An excellent true story about the Civil War and this little Bugler boy. A book you will probably read more than once, that's how good it is. Makes a great gift to your Civil War buff friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Little Bugler
The life and time of Gustav Schurmann, joining the union army with his father and becoming a bugler and drummer boy at the age of 11 years old, one of or the youngest soldier serving at that time. This young boy took part bravely in many battles with most of the latter as a generals aide, many of his close friends died including his father but his wartime experiences were remarkable. Elevated to the position of sergeant at the age of thirteen he had the pleasure of meeting President Lincoln himself and became a firm friend of his son Tad, spending time at the White House. At fifteen he was presented with the Kearney Medal Of Honour after being a veteran of ten battles, then sent to school to with the honour of eventually going to West Point to learn to become an officer. Gustav's mother died before he could attend West Point and he had instead to stay and take care of her, after a long life he eventually died of Consumption at age 55yrs, a good well written book.
