- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2021Time traveling to your younger self, stopping someone you’re close with from spreading a virus, lies, deceit....this book had me hooked. I enjoyed the time travel and the mystery of who is the person that’s suppose to die to save humanity. Just when I thought I figured it out, here comes the plot twist. I thoroughly enjoyed this and interested in other works that she’s done.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2020** spoiler alert ** What if you needed to rewrite the past to save your daughter and about 2/3rd of the human population? What would you do? Would you kill someone you love, the person who hasn't done anything wrong yet but who will be responsible for the deathly epidemic? And can altering one key event really be enough to change the overall outcome?
I read the premise and was immediately intrigued. Time-travel? Romance? Possible extinction of the human race? Yup, I'm in.
I read this book in one day. It's well written, the suspense had me turning the pages like they were on fire and the romance is both sweet and captivating. Blue-haired Bandit definitely stole my heart!
That's not to say that this book isn't without its flaws. Time travel is a tricky subject to write--even my all-time favorite movie trilogy 'Back to the Future' wasn't flawless--and here there were some obvious choices both the Future and Present Characters could've made in their bid to save the human race, but didn't. It's impossible to discuss those without spoilers, so beware...

Time travel in this story is complicated and it doesn't really seem to be sure which road it wants to take. After Alice planted the weed in Laylana's locker (this seemed a pretty fruitless effort to change the future to start off with anyway), Future Alice claimed that what Teenage Alice did had no effect; she still lives in a cave and people are still dying because of the virus. But I couldn't help but wonder how that would work: if Teenage Alice's actions somehow miraculously avoided the virus outbreak from happening would Future Alice's world and all the other people living there just be altered in the blink of an eye? Would 2/3rd of the human populace just pop back into life because the virus didn't happen? That doesn't seem very feasible. What would logically happen is that Alice's actions would create an entirely new timeline that Future Alice wouldn't be aware of? In fact, that new timeline without the virus might already have happened and then there's no way Future Alice would know about it, because it wouldn't be her timeline. Yes, it's enough to make your head hurt :-)
At the end, Future Bandit talks about all the different outcomes he's seen for their daughter Hope and there's some talk about diverging, melding and breaking of timelines but it's complicated and, unless I missed something, it doesn't really add up.
According to Alice's Dad his Future Self instructed him to shut Alice out, because apparently a timeline exists where he doesn't do that and it makes her brother feel like Alice is the favored one. So there's reason to believe that the timeline in which this Alice lives has been altered significantly already when the book starts.
Still with me? :-)
So far, so good. However, since it is confirmed that Alice's father has also been visited by his Future Self the most obvious solution would've been for her dad to just kill Charlie at some point. Sure, Charlie's taken some precautions, but he still managed to get run off the road, so there must've been opportunity. That way he would've taken the load of his daughter's shoulders. Killing Charlie would've been a far more obvious solution than killing Archie.
Alice as a character is... I don't know. If I would start to hear Voices telling me they're me from the future and urging to kill someone, accompanying with a splitting headache, I would've had had my head checked. I at least would've asked my Super Brain of a brother if time travel like in End Game would be possible at all (yes, she was told not to talk about it by the Voice... but End Game is mentioned in the book, so a casual conversation about time travel would've been within the realm of possibility). Alice doesn't ask any questions, she just does as she's told. This is a character trait and part of Alice's grow arc--in the end she starts to rely on her own decision-making abilities more-- but when it comes to questions of life and death, her actually getting a gun and going over to kill to someone, I would like for her to ask a little more questions. Okay, at this point we might've established that time travel is real, but that still doesn't mean that Future Alice doesn't have a hidden Agenda with a capital A.
And even if they had succeeded taking Bandit out of the equation, it only would've removed a small cog out the wheel of time that's already set in motion. It's very debatable if Bandit's death would've had had that much impact on the overall outcome at all.
Though this doesn't end on a cliffhanger, it's likely there's a sequel (well, I really hope there is!), because it is somewhat open-ended. What really happened to Alice's mother? What role does douche-bag Lee play in all this? Has Future Alice's life intersected with her Future Dad? Who did what exactly in their effort to change the past to rewrite the future.
Criticism and plot holes aside (at least what I consider to be plot holes at this point) I really did enjoy this story and definitely will read more by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2020First time reading Pintip and I will definitely keep up with her books now. This book kept me guessing and I absolutely loved it. Definitely check her out!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2020I loved the premise behind this one, and the story seemed like it was going to be nonstop twisty-turny goodness. And in some ways it was; in others, it was pretty problematic.
The pluses: I liked Alice and Bandit, and the Avengers/Harry Potter references were a lot of fun. The story definitely had me turning pages to find out what the heck was going on and what would happen next.
The minuses:(view spoiler on Goodreads)
So...yeah. This isn't going to be my favorite book by this author, but it's not going to stop me from wanting to pick up her next one, either, so there's that.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2020I really enjoyed the twisty turns of this book and its time-travel premise, at least once I got past the often-corny similes and the unnecessarily crude text or two Bandit sends Alice after they meet (she’s seriously okay with that??). I liked the interesting Thai references throughout to learn about that culture. I guessed early on who the Virus Maker was, and then had fun seeing how it all played out. I didn’t expect the ending; it did solve Alice’s dilemma, and I was glad to see the threads tied up instead of leaving the reader on a cliffhanger for a sequel/series. I didn’t believe she really was going to try to shoot her target person; that just seemed weird. The novel does involve a pandemic, in case anyone is not interested in reading about a virus that wipes out most of the world. But that’s obvious in the book summary.
