Purchase options and add-ons
Told from three perspectives A Particular Man is about love, truth and the unpredictable consequences of loss.
When Edgar dies in a Far East prisoner-of-war camp it breaks the heart of fellow prisoner Starling. In Edgar’s final moments, Starling makes him a promise. When, after the war, he visits Edgar’s family, to fulfil this promise, Edgar's mother Clementine mistakes him for another man.
Her mistake allows him access to Edgar’s home and to those who loved him, stirring powerful and disorientating emotions, and embroiling him in a web of deceit.
The loss has driven his sister Aida to seek solace in the arms of a series of men – but the meeting with Starling sparks a powerful and complex connection, fuelled by their mutual longing for Edgar.
Meanwhile Clementine, also grieving for Edgar, has secrets of her own…

- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2024This book explores many themes & asks many good questions, via its plot. It then leaves them all unanswered, in an abrupt unsatisfying ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2025A Particular Man by Lesley Glaister is a well-written and engaging book. This profoundly heartbreaking story is full of great descriptions, real historical details, and extremely human people. The story revolves around Leonard Starling, a WWII POW burdened by a secret, and looks at identity, love, and cultural expectations. Leonard is mistaken for a fellow POW called Roland and becomes involved in the life of Edgar Everett's family, most notably his sister Aida. The letters and journal entries give a sense of being there, while Leonard's problems with being gay in the 1940s seem genuine and honest. Aida's personal issues, along with the love she and Leonard had for Edgar, provide tension to this riveting, thoughtful, and emotional journey of a story. Certainly an interesting and different kind of book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2024This was a fantastic book that got me very emotional, I couldn't put this book down. It covered the tense relationship a gay man had with the world during the 1940s as well as his journey to recover from not only being in a POW camp but grieving for the man he loved. It perfectly captures the confusion and tension between characters and their upcoming choices, and how they decide to move forward in life. An amazing read and perfect for pride month too.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2024As I started to read I anticipated a beautiful love story ended by war. I expected the fallout from this love to show the struggles faced by gay men in the 1940s. Instead it was a confused story that never explored that love, though vaguely implying it was there. It did talk about a gay man’s choice to live as a heterosexual, though never addressing the fallout that might have caused. “A Particular Man” is not a book I would particularly recommend
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2024This was a beautiful story about a solder who shows up and tells this family that he knew their son and fought in the war with him. The family has mixed feelings since they were trying to heal from their loss. Though the man does bond some with the sister of the fallen soldier and that’s when things get a little crazy and secrets get revealed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very very English novel
Surprisingly gentle novel dealing with some complex problems, sexuality, loss, alienation. Would recommend it and will be checking out to see if there is not from this author

5.0 out of 5 stars Five senses alive with detail
Have read every one of lesleys books 5 senses always, keeps you ‘there’ in the story with vivid detail, think I missed The Squeeze though must catch up. Still pondering the story and how it all relates, fits together, how the characters shine off each other my favourite characters the bit parts of the veteran singing by the phone box and the lady with the pram full of teddies do more of this Lesley I at least anyway love it wishing you continuing success in a long and productive career

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling sequel
A Particular Man is highly recommended if you enjoyed the prequel Blasted Things. We take up the family saga 25 years after the first novel ended, as England once more reels from the devastation of a second global conflict. Once again, through beautifully crafted characters, Glaister paints a vivid picture of class-ridden dysfunction and nascent sexual liberation. It's a fascinating and compelling study of English society as it comes to terms with loss and looks towards an uncertain future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blew me away
What a wonderful novel. It’s joined the ranks of my all-time favourites. It took me a little while to get into, not because the beginning isn’t good, but because it’s quite sad at first, but the more I read the more I loved it, until I couldn’t put it down. Beautifully, beautifully written. Can’t recommend it highly enough.
