Purchase options and add-ons
But now, stranded on a seemingly deserted island paradise with no radio and no food, reconciliation becomes a desperate fight for survival.
For when night falls on The Forgotten Island, the dark secrets of the jungle reveal themselves. Something is watching them from the trees.
Something ancient.
Something evil.
Combining the cosmic horrors of HP Lovecraft with the grimy sensibilities of the Video Nasties, The Forgotten Island is an outrageous old-school horror novel packed with mayhem and violence.
Praise for The Forgotten Island
"Lots of sex, violence, gore and laughs - this one is sure to be a hit with classic and modern fans alike!"
Sadie Hartmann, Scream Horror Magazine
"This book read like a blood-drenched love letter to Lovecraft, and didn't hold back on the splatter factor. But what impressed me more was Sodergren's masterful control of dread[...]this book is handled with impressive authority and confidence."
James Fahy, author of The Changeling series
"Nothing is going to prepare you for the mayhem Sodergren throws at you once he shows his cards. A novel packed with with old movie references, gore, violence, humour, wit and originality."

About the author
David Sodergren lives in Scotland with his wife Heather and his best friend, Boris the Pug.
Growing up, he was the kind of kid who collected rubber skeletons and lived for horror movies. Not much has changed since then.
His best known books include the gory and romantic fairy tale The Haar, the blood-drenched folk-horror Maggie’s Grave, and the analog-horror fever dream Rotten Tommy. David also writes under the pseudonym Carl John Lee, publishing splatterpunk
novels such as Psychic Teenage Bloodbath and Cannibal Vengeance.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2018This debut horror novel has it all: beaches, booze, boats, spiders, sex, despicable people whose death you root for, visceral body horror, and even a pug.
It’s obvious that Sodergren has spent a long time steeped in the horror tradition, and as a longtime follower of his Instagram, @paperbacksandpugs, I can say that this is—without a doubt—definitely the case. He knows it all, from the most obscure reference to the pop culture stalwarts. His personal love of the horror genre comes across in the style and substance of this novel, and while it feels like it could be a vintage horror paperback from the 80s paying homage to the video nasties, it is a wholly original tale.
Here’s the setup: two sisters, one boyfriend, and a new guy they just met on holiday in Thailand. They party wildly all night and wind up on a boat headed for an island that seems deserted—but as any good horror hound knows, “seems” is just another way to say that this is where things are about to get crazy.
And crazy is only the start of it.
This is a story I found myself really lost in, the type of book that as you’re reading it, the background falls away and you don’t notice time passing or people trying to talk to you, or even if your house might be burning down.
I appreciated getting to see from the perspectives of a variety of the characters. They were an interesting (and sometimes nasty—in all senses of the word!) bunch and getting into their heads gave each one room to become a more rounded and believable character. It also made me unsure of who was going to make it to the end of the book and who was toast. The characters filled horror tropes without becoming total clichés—not the easiest thing to do.
Ana, the main character, is quite brilliant. I loved how she was an average girl, not super good-looking or skinny, definitely has some bad moments in her past, tends to be insecure, and uses sarcasm to keep people away. Watching her transformation throughout the book is quite great. It’s not like she turns into Lara Croft or anything, but I felt she realistically took on the horrific events around her, adapted how she could, and badassed her way through it. I’d like to think I’d do the same, given the chance.
And the monsters—I think you’re going to like them. The opening scene alone is nightmare-inducing, but what’s worse: not knowing what’s down the dark, black hole or having to confront it face to face and try to stay alive? You’ll have to read on to find out!
I definitely recommend this horror novel to fans looking for something a little different and unique and a lot of blood-spattering, gore-infested (but still character-driven) madness—especially if they have a fondness for vintage horror films and books. There is a lot to love here, and I know this isn’t the last we’ll see from Sodergren (or his pug).
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2021The Forgotten Island was a fun, little horror story with a lot of bite. Unfortunately, it also had quite a bit of cheese. Possibly intentional, as a kick back to 80s horror. The writing and dialogue was really good, but most of the characters were two dimensional. Sex was mentioned way to much, to the point of it being eye-roll inducing. The group are stranded in their underwear, one couple is constantly groping at each other, and one guy actually tries to rape a girl while monsters are around. And not one, but two guys are misogynistic creeps.
Except for the two main characters, Ana and her sister, most of the other characters are so awful that you can’t wait for them to die. Not necessarily a bad thing in a horror, as the deaths of some of these people were very satisfying.
All that being said, the horror in this was great. The last 100 pages were filled with grossness, gore, and cosmic horror. I enjoyed every bit of it. One death scene was one of the best I have read in quite a while. Not completely unpredictable overall, especially the very end, but still very enjoyable. I can’t wait to try some of his other work.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2021A group of tourists from all over come together to party in Thailand, then end up on a not so deserted island with no way to escape. Ancient creepy things come for them and it is a full-on fight to survive.
It has a classic sort of premise with a real old-school young people sex party survival vibe. An homage to Laymon, pretty much all the guys are despicable, and the girls get semi-naked and dirty pretty quickly. But man, those things that come out of the bowels of the island, that is where this book really stands out. *shiver*
This book moves pretty quickly into the action, then doesn't depart from it for very long during character building. I'm glad for that because I didn't really like any of the characters and secretly hoped they would all die. There were all kinds of national stereotypes with strong obnoxious personalities.
If you are freaked out by caves, spiders, dark jungles, and don't mind a lot of violence, sexualized everything, and gore, this is the book for you!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2021The author knows how to write an engaging opening chapter, your curiosity peaked from the very beginning as to what terrors will await the protagonists of this story. The Forgotten Island has some great humor in it. The dialogue was honestly terrific and the characters are really well written. They felt like real people; Sodergren portraying his characters in a truly magnificent way. You have characters, such as Ana, that you can easily relate to as well as characters such as Paul whom you are absolutely fine with whatever horror may happen to him. The writing seems to transport you to the scene that unfolds before the reader; you feel a part of the happenings and it makes it so much more nightmarish when the horror starts. The horror for this novel is truly spectacular. I found myself disgusted and fearful on more than one occasion as this novel continued to terrify and thrill me. The creatures were absolutely nightmarish and I was truly terrified of them as I read this.
The main protagonist Ana is a truly perfect final girl in my opinion. She grows as a character from the horror that she must contend with on the island. She completely transforms from the somewhat shy and anxious character we meet at the beginning of this novel. Seeing her character growth was a wonderful addition. The novel ends in typical horror fashion-- with the possibility of more horror awaiting our characters that seemingly survive the island.
Overall; this book is absolutely perfect for fans of classic horror and those that enjoy plenty of terror and gore in their horror stories. I plan to give it a thorough re-read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome fast paced horror!
This was a really gory and creative novel, it hits hard on violence but the vocabulary of the writer is exapnsive enough to make for an engaging read. Highly reccomended for fans of 80s horror paperbacks, the book itself is nicely printed as well.

*For International Readers* ENGLISH AS SECOND LANGUAGE
This book it's pretty easy to understand and follow the plot with vividly images troughout the book.
Fast-paced book with likeable characters (and very dislikeable ones, good to kill)
his writing is top-notch and even if the writing is descriptive, it's never in a way that got boring or exhaustive. For who like me is not a native english reader it's still easy to understand and follow the plot with vividly images troughout the book.
This is the best horror novels I’ve read this year until now. It has everything i like: tropical island, isolation from the world, young stupid people, crazy bad people and some Godlike villain.
The plot is very standard BUT there is NO one page i read bored or disengaged. This is so rare in the horror genre.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lots of splatter, no suspense
What bothered me the most, besides the unlikable characters und unlikely action, was the poor pacing and complete lack of continuity. After an introduction to a bunch of stereotype characters with as much personality as a CSI extra, it's non stop action but with no suspense. Enemies are really not more than an inconvenience for all but the minor characters. Allegedly two groups of military personnel had no chance on the island, but two Scottish hillbillies turn into Rambo in a matter of hours, only to be made completely helpless whenever it suits the plot, deflating any sense of dread. On top of that, the writer starts with a suspenseful backstory about the two main characters, which he fills in as the story progresses. But since it's non stop action, it leads to laughable scenes were characters are escaping grave danger, wading through a submerged structure in the pitch black after being chased two seconds ago, only to start reminiscen/argue lengthily about their childhood, at which point the author has them literally stop, stand and discuss, apparently forgetting their surroundings, until suddenly, enemies are everywhere and the chase continuous. This Adam Sandler click-style, pressing the pause button on reality to elaborate on a boring backstory was really irritating. Cant recommend the book.
