This is the book we wish our own parents had read when we were teens, and just the balm today's parents are looking for to navigate the messiness of current day diet culture. Perfect for anyone whose own food and body journey has been on the wobbly side of things and wanting something different for our own young people, this gem will be on my go-to recommended list for many years to come.--Fiona Sutherland, ADP, RYT. Director, The Mindful Dietitian and Host, The Mindful Dietitian Podcast
This smart, well-researched book guides parents through every hard conversation and stumbling block we're likely to encounter as we work to empower our kids to love and care for their bodies, and to understand the harm caused by anti-fat bias. - Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2022I'm a therapist and have recommended this book time and time again to my clients, and I always hear nothing but glowing praise. By sharing information on topics like promoting restful sleep, encouraging joyful movement, learning hunger cues, implementing stress management strategies, healing our relationship with food, and even sharing plans for diet-free meal prep, the authors provide answers to practically every question when it comes to having a peaceful relationship with our bodies. One of the best parts of the book is at the very beginning, in which the authors encourage the reader (most likely a parent or caregiver) to examine their own relationship with body image and see how it might be shaping the messages their children are receiving. Though media and peers play major roles in how teens see their bodies, often the most impactful messages come from how their parents talk about food, exercise, weight, bodies, and health — which often link back to how their own parents and peers talked about these topics. This book provides a framework for parents who want to break generational cycles of stigma and teach their children to love and listen to their own bodies. Clients have told me reading this book has helped them with their own body image struggles and have given them strategies to address and prevent the same thing happening to their kids. Whether or not you currently have kids in your life, consider picking up this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2022We grew up dieting and never intended to put that onto our kids - but after reading Raising Body Positive Teens, I feel so much more aware of my own issues with food and weight. This book came along at the right moment for us - and saved our family! My daughter hated eating with us because I tried to micromanage what she ate. But this book guides parents on how to raise confident eaters, who hopefully won’t spend the next several decades dieting like I did. A MUST-READ!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2022As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist working with adolescent eating disorders and being a mom of three, this is the best book I have read to help parents navigate raising kids in our world today. Kids are exposed to diet culture, harmful social media, misinformation about food/body, unrealistic expectations of eating, movement and body size.
Written by a team of experts- an MD, Therapist, and Eating Disorder Dietitian, this book guides parents on how to foster positive food/body relationships and create a home environment that offers compassion, understanding and acceptance during the adolescent years. I will be recommending it to all parents!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2022Absolutely wonderful book. Full of incredible information. A well researched optimistic wholesome guide for parents who want to raise healthy children. In a world so enamored by physical shape, this book shines in it's genuine sincerity in caring for the health and well being of the entire child. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2022Extremely knowledgeable, every teen should read and follow for wellbeing and healthy lifestyle.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2022In her book Raising Body Positive Teens: A Parent’s Guide to Diet Free Living, Exercise, and Body Image, Wendy Sterling provides a must-have manual on fostering a healthy relationship with food and exercise. Exploring topics like diet-free parenting, the importance of managing stress, and setting boundaries, Wendy offers gentle yet practical guidance on changing the way we think about health.
Wendy Sterling is an expert in the field of sports nutrition and eating disorders, holding board certifications as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) and as a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS, formally CEDRD). She reminds us why there is no such thing as a “good” food or “bad” food, providing ways to deliver these messages in a meaningful way. Raising Body Positive Teens uses a framework that engages the reader by including pages for taking notes and ending each chapter with a variety of exploration activities. Whether you are an experienced dietitian in the field of eating disorders or a student pursuing nutrition and dietetics, you will walk away with information that can be used when working with families.
Raising Body Positive Teens proves to not only be an invaluable resource for parents and caregivers, but should also be required reading for all healthcare professionals working with adolescents and teens.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2022I didn't realize how many personal biases and beliefs I was bringing into the food conversation with kids and others around me. This really helped in thinking through that and making different choices. Must read!
