About the Author

Arthur Dorros (arthurdorros.com) has enjoyed words, pictures, and books for as long as he can remember. A photograph taken when he was one and a half years old shows him eating a few. Some of his later experiences led to his creating books. When he was four years old he sat on the tail of a ten-foot long alligator. Fortunately the alligator had been well fed. Out of that adventure grew one of his first published books, Alligator Shoes.

Since 1980, he has written and/or illustrated numerous popular titles about a broad variety of subjects from nonfiction, concept science books, to high-flying stories such as the award-winning
Abuela. Before he started making books he did many things: he worked as a carpenter, teacher, farm worker, longshoreman, and photographer at various times. He loves to travel, learning about and meeting people, and discovering similarities and differences around the world. As a writer and illustrator he brings what he finds into his books. Mr. Dorros currently lives in Seattle, Washington, and enjoys visiting schools throughout the US and internationally to speak with students about telling their own stories.

In addition to the much-appreciated reactions of his readers, his works have been selected as Reading Rainbow Books, ALA Notable Book, American Bookseller Pick of the Lists, NCSS Notable Trade Books in the Field of Social Studies, Parent's Choice Award, Storytime Public TV Selection, and
Booklist Editors' Choice, among other commendations.

Beautifully illustrated by Elisa Kleven
4 out of 5 stars
Beautifully illustrated by Elisa Kleven
Beautifully illustrated by Elisa Kleven, Arthur Dorros' picture book entitled Abuela is written in English with many Spanish phrases. This fantasy story is told by a little spanish girl about the adventures she and her grandmother (abuela) have; whether they are on the bus, on foot, on the plane, or through other mystical methods in her daydreams. The book includes a glossary that provides a list of all the Spanish phrases and words with their English translations.I really enjoy reading the phrases in both English and Spanish, this would be a great way to introduce culture into your classroom and have a different perspective of living in the United States. I think, it would be a great opportunity to allow your Spanish-speaking students to join in this read aloud in the classroom.

I remember reading this book as a child. Now, I'm 29 and have a daughter of my own, and I purchased this book as a gift for my mom to read to our daughter for a Mother's Day gift. We're Puerto Rican so my mom grew up calling her grandmother "Abuela," so this book brings up a lot of great memories for my mom spending time with her Abuela. The pictures are beautiful and this is a sweet story. Highly recommend this book.

This is a charming book about a little girl daydreaming of travels with her Spanish-speaking grandmother. It is a very sweet story, which flows from city to city. The usage of Spanish words is appropriate and doesn't make the book sound too Spanglish (a mixture of Spanish and English). Only one minor con - I wish this book would come in a hardboard format, rather than softcover. It is easier to use with smaller children.

    5.0 out of 5 stars おばあちゃんと一緒に空を飛ぶ・・・
Reviewed in Japan on November 19, 2011
