Goddesses in Everywoman: Powerful Archetypes in Women's Lives Paperback – July 1, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
“A glorious book. Jean Shinoda Bolen’s weaving of myth, science and keen observation makes this an outstanding contribution to the humanities.” — Rita Mae Brown
Jean Shinoda Bolen’s celebrated work of female psychology that uses seven archetypical goddesses to describing behavior patterns and personality traits, as relevant and timeless today as when it was first published thirty years ago.
Myths are fascinating stories that become even more intriguing when we realize that they can reveal intimate truths about ourselves and others. Jean Shinoda Bolen brings the Greek pantheon to life as our inner archetypes and applies the power of myth to our personal lives. Once we understand the natural progression from myth to archetype to personal psychology, and realize that positive gifts and negative tendencies are qualities associated with a particular goddess within, we gain powerful insights.
Depending on which goddess is more active within, one woman might be more committed to achieving professional success, while another more fulfilled as a wife and mother. From the autonomous Artemis and the cool Athena to the nurturing Demeter and the creative Aphrodite, she teaches women how to decide which to cultivate and which to overcome, and how to tap the power of these enduring archetypes to become a better “heroine” in their own life story.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Every woman will find herself in one or more of the Greek heroines, and no woman . . . will find herself criticized. Godesses in Everywoman supplies powerful concrete images that can be used effectively to produce self-understanding and change. Highly recommeneded.” — ALA Booklist
“The highest value of Goddesses in Everywoman lies in the moments of recognition it provides. The author labels them as moments of “Aha!’: that insightful second when we understand and internalize; when we recognize what we ourselves have experienced, feel trust because of that truth, and then are taken one step further to an understanding of ‘Yes, that’s why.’” — Gloria Steinem
“A glorious book. Jean Shinoda Bolen’s weaving of myth, science and keen observation makes this an outstanding contribution to the humanities.” — Rita Mae Brown

Praise for Goddesses in Older Women “Wow! This is an empowering book. It helped me to better understand the energy of my mature years, how to use it with compassion and humor, and where to get it when it seems to fail.” — Isabel Allende
“Goddesses in Older Women offers a brilliant and exhilarating perspective that will revolutionize every woman’s thinking about aging and free her to see the face in her mirror in a completely different way.” — Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., author of Kitchen Table Wisdom

Through her years of clinical work, Bolen presents compelling portraits of these goddesses, allowing readers to have moments of recognition and self-discovery. By framing these behavioral patterns as goddesses, the author empowers women and highlights their inherent strength and wisdom. This book is a testament to the optimism, courage, and hope that can be found within every woman.
The author's writing style is engaging and accessible, making it easy for readers to grasp the concepts and insights presented. Each chapter delves into the mythology, attributes, and ways to cultivate or activate each goddess archetype. Additionally, the book explores the influence of these archetypes in different stages of a woman's life, including childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
While the book is not without its flaws, such as subjective theories and occasional lack of support, it remains a valuable resource for self-reflection and personal growth. The author's exploration of the goddess Persephone as the Maiden could have been further expanded to include her role as Queen of the Underworld. However, these minor shortcomings do not diminish the overall impact and value of the book.
In conclusion, "Goddesses in Everywoman" is a classic that continues to resonate with readers. It offers a deep understanding of the archetypes of feminine consciousness and encourages women to embrace and embody these goddesses within themselves. This book is highly recommended for anyone seeking self-knowledge and a greater understanding of the women in their lives. It provides invaluable insights into the universal female archetypes that shape and characterize the experiences of most women.
Jean Shinoda has written a classic book that looks into the archetypes of feminine consciousness through the stories of the ancient Goddesses and encourages us all to find these Goddesses within.
I would add that as we evolve and life gives us lessons, challenges and various experiences, we shift from one Goddess consciousness to another. In the end, they all blend into a Goddess-oneness and that experience is delightful. Of course it is not all win and roses. Many Goddesses, Persephone for example, do have their neuroses and so we do need to evaluate the whole package. However, there is definitely gold in this wisdom and so I heartily endorse this book and encourage women to read it cover to cover!
Being two thirds of the way through the Everyman book, though, I find myself wishing there was just one book called The Gods and Goddesses in Everyone. For example, none of the goddesses seem to have a truly sensual relationship to the world but in the Everyman book, Dionysus does. Conversely I know men that seem more like Athena in their cool rational intellect. They aren't really a Zeus or an Apollo.
In the end it seems a well-rounded person brings to life the positive characteristics of many archetypes, both male and female.
