#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Wrecker needs to deal with smugglers, grave robbers, and pooping iguanas—just as soon as he finishes Zoom school. Welcome to another wild adventure in Carl Hiaasen's Florida!

Valdez Jones VIII calls himself Wrecker because his great-great-great-great-great-grandfather salvaged shipwrecks for a living.

So is it destiny, irony, or just bad luck when Wrecker comes across a speedboat that has run hard aground on a sand flat? The men in the boat don't want Wrecker to call for help—in fact, they'll pay him to forget he ever saw them.

Wrecker would be happy to forget, but he keeps seeing these men all over Key West—at the marina, in the cemetery, even right outside his own door. And now they want more than his silence—they want a lookout.

He'll have to dive deep into their shady dealings to figure out a way to escape
this tangled net. . . .

Love the characters. They are so believable. Even for teenagers. The skill sets are totally probable based on where they live. The history lessons are good for all of us.

I love Carl! I've read all his adult books and when I ran out of those (WRITE MORE) -- I went to the YA novels. Which were good. Only this one, well, not as good as the others. I think he's running on fumes. It's an okay story but at no point do you ever feel it's anything but a story. It's a bit too "out there" to feel right.

As usual, Carl Hiassen hits the mark with colorful and quirky characters...and oh, so hilariously funny in many spots...I DO laugh out loud when reading so many of Hiassen's books...!

Have read all of Carl’s books. The earlier ones are so much better. This one was really meh. Characters are interesting and dialog good but story wasn’t great and Covid already feels like a dated topic. Bummer. Wanted to like it more.

I love me some Carl Hiaasen, and ordered this book as soon as I saw that it was available. I'm guessing that it's meant to be a young adult book (it doesn't seem to be marketed that way, but the main characters are high-school age). For that audience it would be fine.

I’ve been searching for entertaining young adult books not based on magic or werewolves- sick of those. Of course! Carl Hiaasen! Loved his adult books, and now I love these.

I enjoy all of this authors books. He can mix the absurdity of life with the mundane and create a story that’s engaging, exciting, and nerve wracking. He has a way with words, creates visual imagery that is easy to see, and he includes humor.
I know he intended this book for young readers but this 67 year old really enjoyed the adventure and twists.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant as usual
Reviewed in Canada on October 4, 2023
Incredibly funny. As well written as Fanny and Zoey. Less the earlier sarcasm and political satire. Less slapstick. All of which was great. Sick puppy an all time favourite. But this is a more maturely written adolescent novel like Vonnegut or Hesse. Less journalist Hemingway but humor and more authoring like Harlan. Genius. Really. A perfectly concocted story with terrific plot but deep coming of age characters. Kids and young love. You know Jimmy Buffet would love it. You can feel the tropics. Thank you for a terrific read. Kept me up at night. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent and certainly not childish
Reviewed in the Netherlands on October 2, 2023
It is rather pleasant to read a good guy bad guy story that was probably aimed at younger readers, but grips adults likewise.

There’s some far off violence, but non of that bloody stuff most books need to keep you reading. Here, the storytelling is the important mental glue that keeps you in your seat from page one.

Well done indeed.

Entertaining read, however I wish that the publishers would let us know which of his books are for young readers, and which are classic Hiassen for adults.

An ok plot with the usual Hiassen natural history and fishing bits for added colour.
Ok but he has much better books on the whole a little disappointing
