Mighty Millie Novak Paperback – August 20, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
Social anxiety, her parents’ divorce, and messy friendships won’t stop Millie’s pursuit of what she wants—in roller derby or in love. But her own lies might . . .
Sixteen-year-old Millie Novak is stuck in an “if only” rut. If only she were stronger and faster, maybe her roller derby teammates would take her seriously. If only she had the guts to go back to in-person learning, maybe she’d have a social life. If only she weren't such an awkward mess, maybe she could get the attention of that cute girl on the all-star derby team. And don’t get her started on her family!
After the one-two punch of her beloved older brother’s departure for college and her parents’ overdue split, Millie decides it’s time to reinvent herself. With the help of her new friend Pumpkin and a little bit of deceit, Millie crafts a plan to cement her status on the team and get her crush to fall for her.
But reinvention isn’t easy. Millie’s constantly shown up by show-off teammate Stork, and the only way she can get her crush’s attention is through increasingly elaborate lies. Worse, she begins to suspect Pumpkin is not the supportive friend she’d imagined. Toughest to handle? Realizing the person she’s in love with might not be her longtime crush, after all.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“While the story involves serious topics like divorce, identity, and bullying, the tone is lightened by the derby girls’ names, like Ann Archy and Impaylor Swift. Millie is relatable in her anxiety and confusion, and readers will enjoy the ride.” —Booklist
“This coming-of-age debut featuring a beautifully flawed queer-identifying protagonist endeavoring to succeed in a largely underrepresented sport will likely be enjoyed by readers beginning their roller derby journey or those who can’t get enough of it, as well as those curious to know more about derby culture.” —School Library Journal
"An original, deftly crafted, and fun read from start to finish, Mighty Millie Novak by Elizabeth Holden will hold special appeal for young readers with an interest in romance and coming of age fiction stories. . . . [E]specially and unreservedly recommended for middle school, highschool, and community librar[ies]." —Midwest Book Review
“This is a coming-of-age story that speaks to the heart of many young girls who are trying to find their way in the world.” —Story Monsters Ink

About the author
Like Millie, the protagonist of her debut YA novel, Elizabeth is an avid roller derby player, a blocker with Madison Roller Derby since 2015. Liz’s league-mates know her as Auntie Matter; her derby name is a reference to her job teaching college physics. (And, yes, she is also an aunt. Hi William and Hugo!) When not busy writing, playing derby, or teaching, Liz is most likely leading international trips with her company, Leaping Hound Travel. Liz also co-hosts an X-Files podcast, We Want to Believe, with her sister. Liz’s tattoos are vibrant and numerous, her laugh is loud, and her heart belongs to her pet greyhounds. - Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2024Mighty Millie Novak tells the story of a young girl on the cusp of adulthood. Her brother has gone away to college, while Millie goes to school online. Her parents are going through a divorce, and her dad has moved out. This is a difficult time for Millie, so Roller Derby becomes a lifeline of sorts for her. Before I read this novel I knew next to nothing about Roller Derby. I learned a lot! I won't ruin it, but I highly recommend it for you, or a young reader in your life, boy or girl.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2024I’m not a huge fan of YA contemporary. (Or girl + girl romances.) But this book still made me cry.
It’s funny, smart, relatable, and poignant. I’ll be looking for more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2024Mighty Millie Novak by Elizabeth Holden is a sweet YA novel following a queer teen girl trying to find her place both in the world at large and on her roller derby team, and maybe finding some love along the way.
Millie has been home schooled since middle school, her parents are going through an overdue split, and her beloved older brother *just* went off to college so it's totally understandable that she feels a bit adrift at the start of this book.
I saw myself in her a lot; we're both solidly built, we both have anxiety, and we're both queer. And gosh, I feel like everyone feels out of place when they're an adolescent. She's totally relatable.
Mille's roller derby teammates are great! There's a lot of diversity on the squad, which is always great to see. Derby names are some of the best parts of the sport, in my opinion, and we have gems here such as Ann Archy and Impaylor Swift.
I was rooting for Millie the whole way through this book. It's hard growing up and figuring out self-confidence! Especially if you weren't really socialized due to being homeschooled. This is a wonderful coming-of-age story with a diverse cast of quirky characters and a steady plot.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2024Easily a 5 star read! Holden's book is fun, lighthearted, and carries a great message about being true to yourself and finding strength in challenges. I loved it!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2024I not only learned about roller derby but appreciated the relationships that were so REAL! Real emotions, real lessons in friendship and forgiveness, and real growth of values for authentic teens. A good read for teens and those that care about them...
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2024This book is more than fine!! I loved Millie, aka Mighty! As a retired skater, the roller derby life was spot-on, and brought back fun memories from my own first days on eight wheels. It found the storyline enjoyable, relatable, and sweet. A perfect YA read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2024I don't know where to begin other than, I loved this!
Mighty Millie Novak is a contemporary YA fiction book with a little something for everyone. Athletics, friendship, queerness, family dynamics - the list goes on.
Elizabeth Holden gives readers a front row seat to the world of roller derby. I don't have a lot of knowledge of roller derby, other than Whip It, but I found myself cheering for these fictional characters and their accomplishments, getting excited when the team scored. I can only imagine how exciting this sport must be in real life!
Mighty is a flawed protagonist, but at her core, still likeable and I couldn't help rooting for her. She isn't perfect and that's part of what allows her to "grow" on the reader as the story progresses.
I read an ARC copy of this book and I loved it so much, I'm buying a copy for my son.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2024This was a fun coming-of-age story, perfect for anyone who loved Whip It but wished it had been sapphic. Millie (aka Mighty) was flawed, believable, and relatable. And while she made several poor decisions (like lying about her age), she did get called out for them. She had a lot of growth over the course of the story, both as an athlete and in learning to be less self centered and consider others more.
Stork was my favorite character. I loved her dedication to roller derby, and how true she was to herself. I was rooting for Millie to wake up and smell the hottie and give Stork a chance.
