Why is Tim Jacobus R.L. Stine's favorite illustrator? Maybe because they've done so many scary books together. Tim did the cover paintings for more than 80 Goosebumps books, as well as the six amazing Amazon books. Recently, the two of them got together and asked the questions they've always wanted to ask each other...

~~~~
TIM (the illustrator) asks R.L. STINE (the author):
TIM: When I illustrate, I can "see" the image in my head before I start to draw. Do you "hear" a story when you write?
R.L.: I hear kids when I write. I try to hear the voice of the boy or girl who is telling the story. I visit schools a lot and talk with kids so I can keep up with what they are saying these days and what real kids sound like. Then I try to hear their voices tell the story as I write it.
~
TIM: You've written so many books I can't do the math, but I bet you've used millions of words. What's you favorite word?
R.L.: Someone once got in an elevator with a very witty author named Noel Coward and said, "Say something funny." And Coward said, "Kangaroo." Kangaroo has been a favorite word of mine ever since I heard that story. But as a horror writer, I guess my favorite word is SCREAM!
~
TIM: Where is the strangest place you have come up with an idea for a story?
R.L.: An empty movie theater. My wife and I went to see a scary movie in a big, old movie house-- and we were the only ones in the theater. It was kind of creepy. Then about halfway through the movie, I turned around and saw that the back row was filled with people sitting straight and still. Suddenly, I thought-- They are zombies! I'm trapped in a dark zombie theater! And that's where the idea for the book Zombie Town came from.
~
TIM: If you couldn't write-- and you possessed all skills-- what would you like to do for a living?
R.L.: I drew comic strips from the time I was in 4th grade, and I always dreamed of being a cartoonist. You can imagine my shock when the other kids told me how bad my art was. They were right. I stunk! I got over my extreme disappointment by starting to write. But if I had the skill, I would love to do what you do, Tim.
**********
R.L. STINE (the author)asks TIM (the illustrator):
R.L.: If you couldn't be an artist what would you like to be?
TIM: I would like to be a "Snowmaker" at one of the big ski resorts, out west, like Mammoth Mountain in California. You work at night when everyone goes home. Set up the snow guns, cover the slopes, and groom them with the Sno-Cat track machine. It's kinda like a snow tank! Then, you get to ski for free! I love that snow!
~
R.L.: When we were kids, my brother and I used to go to a horror movie every Saturday. We loved them all. The covers on our six Amazon books look like movie posters to me. Were you also influenced by horror movies? If so, which ones?
TIM: I was a complete "chicken" as a kid. I couldn't sit through any horror movie. The first scary movie I saw was on TV. It isn't really a horror movie. It was the Hunchback of Notre Dame-- the black-and-white version with Charles Laughton. That movie freaked me out! The mutant, Quasimodo, was something that REALLY could exist. Black-and-white movies, black-and-white photos—they all seem more "real" than full color to me.
~
R.L.: You have painted so many great covers. I think your scariest Goosebumps cover was for The Barking Ghost. And the black cat on The 13th Warning is really creepy. Do you have a favorite cover? Is it a scary one or a funny one?
TIM: It's hard to pick a favorite. But you gotta love the blue bathroom blobs in Monster Blood IV. That one is a little creepy and WAY funny. For just outright scary, I love the ticket taker in Zombie Town!
~
R.L.: What was the weirdest thing someone ever asked you to draw?
TIM: Oh, I have drawn a lot of weird stuff. One time, I had to paint a pimple! You know... acne! It was a medical illustration. Gross. When I first started illustrating, I painted pictures of food. My food illustrations were used in the Sunday newspaper for the local supermarket. I painted every food you can imagine. I can draw a pretty mean potato!
The Haunted Mask by R. L. Stine is Goosebumps books number 11 in the original season order. This book was good sort a revenge plot gone bad. Carley Beth is scaredy cat, tired of everyone picking on her because she gets scared buys a mask that scares people but the mask is haunted and can't be removed. This one is actually pretty scary for a Goosebumps book. The monster voice that the mask puts out and the personality attached is kind of terrifying. " I'll eat you up!" was one of the lines. This is the first book in the series so far and I like how Halloween was incorporated and the old out dated costumes mentioned, Freddy Kruger and Indiana Jones are still popular, but I haven't seen an E.T. in some time. The Haunted Mask did bring the dreaded fake scare back, but there was only two and they were used in a way that helped the story along.
The Plot: Carley Beth is a scaredy cat, who her so-called friends prank on a daily basis. They prank her into eating a worm and that a tarantula escaped. These pranks would get almost anybody but carley will scream at the top of her lungs every time. She decides she's going to get revenge this Halloween and get a scary mask this year. She rejects the costume her mom already bought her, a duck. She gets her life savings, 30 dollars, determined to buy a scary mask on Halloween, the store is closed but the own opens back up. She finds what she wants through a door in the back. The store owner said he took the mask off the market because they were deemed to scary. She's persistent and she buys the mask. The mask gives her a cool evil voice and serious anger issues. She scares her friends but when the fun ends, she finds the mask won't come off. I she doomed to have the mask be her new face forever?
What I Liked: The revenge storyline is great Steve and Chuck are jerk and had it coming. I loved the some of the lines where she yells, "I'll eat you up!" to kids, then the mom of the kids says something and she says, "I'll eat you up too!" Carley Beth gets demented and starts scaring everyone and stealing their candy. The tarantula prank was pretty good and well thought out. The horror of the mask attached to Carley Beth's mask is good. I almost want a backstory to how the unloved were created, which were briefly discussed. The final scene was great even though it was predictable it was still pretty perfect. The Classic cover for this book is one of the best in all of Goosebumps covers.
What I Disliked: Her costume was only a mask, and regular clothes, the mask was described as scary but the regular clothes would have counter balanced that on Halloween.
Recommendations: This is one of the better Goosebumps books from the series. There is some good laughs and good scares. This book ranks high in my ranking. This book also has one of the better tv episodes that is a two parter, and one of the first stand alone episodes to get released on VHS when that was a thing. I rated Goosebumps the Haunted Mask by R. L. Stine 5 out of 5 stars. Here's my full ranking of the 11 Goosebumps books that I have read in order to my favorite to least favorite Stay Out of the Basement, The Haunted Mask, Night of the Living Dummy, Welcome to Camp Nightmare, The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, Say Cheese and Die, Let's Get Invisible, Welcome to Dead House, The Girl who Cried Monster, The Ghost Next Door, and Monster Blood.
During virtual school this year, I looked for chapter books that would please a boy who was above grade level in reading. This fit the bill.
***I am rating this book moderate, and not advanced, because my grandson was already reading at a 3rd grade level. He also does not get scared at things purposely mysterious or a bit scary. However, Goosebump books may not be appropriate for a child who scares easily and is unsettled by the type of stories found in this series.***
I have read the first 4 in this series. They are all good, but I would rate them in the order of: #3, #4, #1, #2 - Not that it matters, but just my opinion. They're all fun with good twists.
I read this for nostalgia sake, and it remains a fun read. However, I wish the book had more scenes and did less explaining and more showing - I rather learn for myself that it is scary, rather than be told!
I already loved this book, but this new 'redone' cover and behind the scenes makes it even better. The behind the scenes is awesome, it includes a sort of 'bio' on the Haunted Mask, a Q and A with R.L Stine, and a preview to Horrorland The Scream of the Haunted mask. Still a great read after all these years
Of all the goosebumps books I've read, this one is my favorite. It was even my fave as the tv show.
Part of it regarding the scientist doesn't make much sense (don't worry, no spoilers), but overall I really enjoyed it.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Nightmare !
This story is very unique and it is one of the most original and scary Goosebumps stories I have ever read. The episode was fantastically scary because of the mask alone.
The story starts a bit slow but it builds as it moves along. The atmosphere set up is errie and sad at the same time. The ending is the best of all and my personal favourite. Its pretty scary for the kids. I had nightmares after watching a show of this.
