Uncover a world of dark magic, forbidden adventures and family secrets when a spooky fairground returns to Victorian London.

Adopted by a family of bakers, 12-year-old orphan Nancy Crumpet's life is a delightful mix of flour, salt, and love, yet her mind is brimming with questions no one can answer. Where are her birth parents? Why must she keep her mysterious birthmark hidden? And why are all the adults terrified of the fairground?

Faced with an opportunity to enter the Scareground, Nancy and her best friend discover a place of dark magic, where rides come to life and there's a mystery around every corner. When she meets the fair's sinister owner, Skelter, Nancy faces secrets more horrifying than she could ever have imagined.

Book source ~ TWR Tour

When 12-yr-old Nancy was a baby she was adopted by the Crumpets. They are bakers and they live above their bakery. Nancy loves them, but wonders where she came from, who her parents are, and why the Sky talks to her. When the Scareground returns to Greenwich, Nancy pieces together a bunch of clues and decides she needs to go to it even if the Crumpets have forbidden it. With her best friend, Arthur Green, at her side, she can do anything. But is the Scareground going to prove their undoing?

Ooooh! Spooky, mysterious, and just a bit dangerous makes this a perfect tale for a reader with a sense of adventure, whimsy, and imagination. Nancy and Arthur are great characters inhabiting a creative world I’m glad I entered. I love that Nancy talks with the Sky and the Sky “talks” back. That Arthur is smart and supportive yet has things he is dealing with though that doesn’t stop him from enjoying time with his best friend. The kids could be obnoxious in their actions, but they aren’t.

Scareground leans toward horror without actually being horrifying and in trying to find her origins, Nancy learns more than she bargained for, but that’s what makes this a compelling read. Live, learn, and grow. We should all take a page from Nancy’s book.

What is it about fairgrounds, carnivals and circuses that makes them so alluring, magical, and perfect for horror stories? Skelter Tombola and his Scareground ticked all the boxes for creepy rides, sinister showmen, and magic tricks. It’s the perfect blend of wonder and fear that would keep me reading about the Scareground forever.

I utterly loved this book! The imagery is a delight, taking the reader into such a creepy Victorian steam-punk fair. Can't wait to read more Nancy Crumpet adventures.

A brilliant read, I read it with my daughter in one day! Thoughtfully written, a great story line and wonderful characters. And lots of spookiness that my daughter loved! I would really recommend this book.

I really hope there will be a second book so I can see what more adventures Nancy will get up to!
