“Kraus gets under your skin with brutal, elegant efficiency. Necessarily horrifying, devastatingly timely.”―Kiersten White, New York Times-bestselling author of The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein and Slayer

From New York Times-bestselling author Daniel Kraus comes a breakneck, genre-defying YA thriller perfect for fans of Kiersten White, Neal Shusterman, and M. T. Anderson.

Liv Fleming’s father went missing more than two years ago, not long after he claimed to have been abducted by aliens. Liv has long accepted that he’s dead, though that doesn’t mean she has given up their traditions. Every Sunday, she and her lifelong friend Doug Monk trudge through the woods to check the traps Lee left behind, traps he set to catch the aliens he so desperately believed were after him.

But Liv is done with childhood fantasies. Done pretending she believes her father’s absurd theories. Done going through the motions for Doug’s sake. However, on the very day she chooses to destroy the traps, she discovers in one of them a creature so inhuman it can only be one thing. In that moment, she’s faced with a painful realization: her dad was telling the truth. And no one believed him.

Now, she and Doug have a choice to make. They can turn the alien over to the authorities…or they can take matters into their own hands.

On the heels of the worldwide success of
The Shape of Water, Daniel Kraus returns with a horrifying and heartbreaking thriller about the lengths people go to find justice and the painful reality of grief.

I will state right off that I am a Daniel Kraus fan. I always look forward to his new releases, as I admire his thoughtful, brooding style. He is a master of the creepy with an uncanny ability to bring the terror and make you think at the same time. This book examines issues of family, grief, torture, friendship and remaining true to who you are and will keep you up late turning the pages. Be warned though! There are also aliens, mysteries, corruption and brutality in this finely written tale. It's a great story and a good choice for older teen and adult readers. The sheer amount of brutal violence makes it a no go for young teens. Horror fans will love this one.

Pre-ordered this on a whim, after an advance review in GrimDark Magazine sparked my interest. I confess it took me a few chapters to decide whether or not I liked it/wanted to stay on board, but I must say, I'm glad I stuck with it, because once things ramp up, it sucked me in and held my interest nicely. Things go VERY dark (including one initially sympathetic character's startlingly bleak, tragic arc), though I didn't find the horror-violence to be nearly as extreme or pervasive as some of the other reviews I read made it sound. There were some stellarly executed surprise twists and reversals, some of which totally caught me off guard, others I somewhat pieced together in advance, though even with the latter, I still found the unfolding of the revelations highly satisfying (especially one late scene that plays out at an old abandoned farm, where the atmosphere and nightmarish perversity gets cranked to 11 to pitch-perfect effect). I wasn't a fan of the abrupt ending or the unresolved threads it left hanging, and while I'm glad we got a slight ray of hope, after the intense downward-spiral everyone's lives have taken, the delivery strained the credibility of the story's otherwise sound internal logic. These minor complaints aside, this is a fine read if you're in the mood for some small-town horror, reminiscent of a much darker, more adult STRANGER THINGS.

My Review- Thank you Henry Holt Books For Young Readers for gifting me an E-ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I rate this book 3.5 out of 5 Stars. It is out today to buy at your favorite retailers!

I was so excited to see something new and fresh in the YA world! I love Alien stories, and I really enjoyed this one. Don’t let the fact that this is YA fool you though. It is pretty damn intense, and dark. I am not an avid horror reader, but this was the perfect book to open my eyes to the genre.

Parts of this book do get pretty gruesome, there is some body mangling/gore so if you are weak stomached or triggered but such things, proceed with caution. For me, the writing was dark and delish, and it had me sitting on the edge of my seat, with my heart racing, and the urge to look over my shoulder. Not to mention the Alien Abduction dreams that this book induced!

I haven’t read any other books by Daniel Kraus, but I am ready for more!

This is one of those books that I think you should read without knowing much about it beforehand. I wasn’t expecting to feel this emotional when I finished but, here I am. I know this is the vaguest review ever but, trust me if you come across Bent Heavens do yourself a favor and clear your schedule and read it, you won’t be disappointed.

After reading other reviews, I was preparing for a terrifyingly gruesome story, but that's not what this is. The story is definitely engaging, the twists are not that far out of left field, and the final scenes are pretty tense. It's also weird that this is referred to as a YA book, but I can only assume that's because the protagonist is a teen. This is as much YA as Carrie. Overall, it's a good read that delves into some pretty dark issues, but it's not particularly scary.

[Snack-Size Review] Bent Heavens, by Daniel Kraus

What It’s About: When Liv Fleming’s father Lee disappears after spending months ranting about aliens, hoarding weapons, and building terrible traps around their property, Liv and everyone else chalks it up to some kind of psychotic break. But two years after he vanishes, Liv and her friend Doug find an inhuman creature caught in one of the traps.Sure, they could turn the thing over to the authorities. Or they could keep it and try to use it to figure out what happened to Lee.

A Word From The Nerd: I’m genuinely not OK right now. I’ve seen a lot of reviewers say that a book left them wrecked, and I may have even said that a time or two myself, but duckies, I think this might be the most utterly destroyed my soul has ever been by a work of fiction. It’s not the body horror (although there’s plenty) or the number of times I found myself going “no no NO NONONO” when I saw things taking a certain direction (happened multiple times) or the absolutely breathtaking, heartbreaking, horrifying twists (oh so very many of those). It’s that I understood every awful decision, and might have made the same ones. This book is going to live in my mind for a very, very long time.

The Nerd’s Rating: FIVE HAPPY NEURONS (and a few bottles of chardonnay, I could use some oblivion.)

Well written, but soul sapping read of torturing an alien... Scenes so distasteful that I found it difficult to continue reading at times. The denouement was also very disappointing, and I find I come away with nothing from this book except a finer appreciation of interrogation methods. Gave four stars because author DOES pull you into the story very effectively
