If you’ve ever felt a tug to get more connected to the people around you, but don’t know where to start: this is the book for you.
If you’ve internalized messages from a churchy space that “hospitality” has to look or sound a certain way for it to “count” or for it to be virtuous: this is the book for you.
If you know there’s more you could do to bridge the racial, economic, and experiential divides that currently separate you from your neighbors, but you aren’t sure how to take any of that on: this is the book for you.
Shannan is relatable and friendly, honest and pragmatic. This isn’t a list of fussy or showy steps to curate a picture-perfect, social-media-darling, award-winning arrangement. It is more like a thought- and reflection-provoking conversation to help you make small changes or take small actions that will make a difference in how you cultivate relationships in your real, lived neighborhood.
(I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher. My review is my own opinion.)

If you find yourself longing to know your neighbors more, to be connected to those you find yourself next to but not CLOSE to, this is the book for you. Come for the shared love of tacos, stay for the heart hitting truths: "I am convinced our path forward is paved in concrete and asphalt. It is the sidewalks, the back roads, the drive-thru lines, and the grocery aisles that will help us course-correct. Welcoming nuance with a soft heart and open arms is a skill on the decline. But we are up for the challenge because we refuse to believe that a healthier, kinder world is only a false hope or fantasy." Amen.
I love to host, but don't often do it. I need control, I need details, etc. Here's how this book encouraged me to let go a bit- I texted some random neighbors that I would be serving chili and they should come by if they could. And they replied things like "cool!" or "that's so nice!" but didn't actually say if they were coming or not. So now I have to wait and see. Will we have enough? Will anyone show up? Somebody did ask if they could bring something and I wanted to say no, but instead I remembered that Shannan encouraged us to ask for help, so I said "paper bowls please!" This exercise in social anxiety is brought to you by "Start with Hello" :) But seriously- this book is one I will be thinking over for months to come.
“We don’t pursue connection because we know it will be easy. We pursue connection because we believe it multiplies our possibilities for wholeness.”

“We don’t pursue connection because we know it will be easy. We pursue connection because we believe it multiplies our possibilities for wholeness.”
"We awaken and awaken and awaken ourselves because the world outside is not scary or separate. It's what holds us together. We face it with arms linked and eyes wide because we are the electricity we don't want to miss."
This is a book I will return to again and again...and already am buying additional copies to give as gifts!
