- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2014a great accumulation of Irish legend and myth; great for the modern era!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2022I purchased "Gods and Fighting Men" by Lady Gregory, published by an unknown publisher via CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (March 12, 2013). This paperback edition is 270 pages, and its ISBN-13 is 978-1482758986. I feel it's important to specify this, because Amazon likes to confuse the matter by combining reviews for very different editions with similar titles.
Thanks to a library loan, I can confirm that this edition is the complete text of Lady Augusta Gregory's erudite translation and compilation originally titled "Gods and Fighting Men: The Story of the Tuatha de Danaan and the Fianna of Ireland, Arranged and Put Into English by Lady Gregory," originally published in 1910 by John Murray of London, UK.
I made a side-by-side, chapter by chapter comparison, and can confirm that this edition includes the complete text of Lady Gregory's invaluable work: from "Part 1: The Gods" divided into 5 "books" beginning with "The Coming of the Tuatha de Danaan," through "Part 2: The Fianna" in 11 "books," the last of which is "Oisin and Patrick."
This edition omits Lady Gregory's Dedication page and the Table of Contents, which originally appeared before Yeats' Introduction.
This edition includes Yeats' Introduction; and it also includes Lady Gregory's "Apology" and her notes on "The Age and Origin of the Stories of the Fianna" at the end.
Unfortunately, this edition does not include Lady Gregory's notes on "The Authorities," "The Pronunciation," or "The Place Names" from the Notes at the end, which is why I assigned this edition 4 stars.
Given the great price, and the fact that the original and the "Courage Books" reprint are both out of print, this edition is an excellent value for the student of Irish mythology.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2014Fabulous source of legends and myths of the Celts.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2022I purchased a copy of "Gods and Fighting Men", published by First Rate Publishers of Coppell Texas. The type face is small and there are wide, empty margins on each page. I can't help but think they could have increased the font size by one or two points and still maintained the same page count.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2023the font size is super small and the margins make no sense. really unreadable.
