A Nutcracker Nightmare (A Killer Chocolate Mystery) Hardcover – October 17, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Hanna and Alex, owners of the Murder and Mayhem book and chocolate shop, are busy preparing for the Harriston High School’s reunion weekend. Neighbors will connect with old friends and perhaps try to avoid old foes. One person no one can avoid is Kyle, the former star quarterback, who is busy using his entire playbook to try and score with Hanna, even threatening her if she doesn’t play nice. At the reunion, Alex glimpses more drama than nostalgia as insults are flung around like a football at a Friday night game. The party is put on hold when Alex finds the dead body of none other than Kyle himself, bludgeoned to death by a nutcracker that the sisters admired earlier in the night.
Hanna quickly becomes the prime suspect—someone saw her slap Kyle in the face at the reunion dance. She’ll need her sister, their sleuthing canine, Watson, and their old friends and colleagues to help break this case wide open. While looking through old yearbooks and taking a stroll down memory lane, Alex uncovers a few secrets about Kyle, now, it seems like everyone had a motive to kill him.
But when the suspects start becoming the victims, Alex and Hanna know that they can’t melt under the pressure—they must find the killer before they become just another yearbook memory.

I did think it was pretty neat that the names of their chocolates go with the theme of their shop. Some of the names of the chocolates include True North Nicotine Caramel, recipe included and Gingerbread Gelsemine Truffle, recipe included. In real life would these names of chocolates be off putting or draw people in? I'd say both.
With high school reunion weekend coming up, some of the former students are looking forward to it and some just want to try to avoid their foes. When an arrogant former student shows up everyone tries to avoid him. They know how rotten he still is. One of the sisters is accused of murder because of an action that was said to have happened. Will this candy maker still be able to stir the chocolate pot, or will the cooking fires be growing cold? The victim was very unlikable so many had a reason to want him out of the picture.
Loved the Christmas theme, it was there but not overwhelming. I enjoyed this mystery set around the holidays and it kept me reading to see how it was solved.

I enjoyed this cozy mystery. It had interesting characters and an intriguing storyline with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I do wish I had read the first book for a little more background on who everyone was, but I think I did ok.
Love the recipes at the end of the book. And the cover is so fun!
Many thanks to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
I love this series but wasn't crazy about this installment, because of the book being centered around a class reunion. I had a hard time getting into the story and keeping all the new characters strait. That said I do look forward to reading book 3 when it comes out.
Half of the twin sister chocolate mystery fan team, Alex seems to have a knack for solving murders at Christmas. Her twin Hanna is the magic behind their chocolates, and I was definitely drooling a bit during the scenes where she’s whipping up another batch. I really enjoy these two together. Their bond is strong, they’re comfortable around each other, and they truly are a team. Their employee Maggie is a treasure, and I still adore Maggie’s brother Pastor Tom and her son Duncan even though their brewing romances with Alex and Hanna, respectively, are tenuous in this book. Alex & Hanna’s adorable dog Miss Watson also steals the show – I love her!
It’s high school reunion weekend in Harriston, and an eclectic blend of characters are making appearances. From the truly loathsome victim Kyle to a bevy of people who had reason to hate him, Alex has her work cut out for her in solving the crime to clear Hanna’s name. In the midst of the investigation, a pesky town gossip blogger seems to always be at least one step ahead and has Alex in his or her sights. Is Kyle’s death related to lingering animosity from high school days or his more recent behavior? Is the culprit someone Alex knows from town or someone who’s returned for the reunion? I had as much trouble as Alex did in narrowing down the suspects – it seemed like just about the time we’d at least partially ruled one out we ended up adding a couple more people to the list. I thought for sure I knew who it was, and then a stunning twist obliterated my guesses.
Bottom Line: Tis the season for Alex to find another body – or two – and the next Killer Chocolate Mystery arrives just in time! Her mystery-bookstore-slash-mystery-chocolate-shop that she runs with her twin sister Hanna is just as delightful as it was during our first visit, and I once again loved the quaint Montana setting and the engaging characters. I thought the mystery itself was perfectly paced and nicely layered, with nearly an entire town’s worth of suspects. I had my suspicions as to who did it… and I was completely wrong LOL. But I had lots of fun guessing and watching to see how it would play out! The dashes of romance are a nice touch for this KissingBooks fan, but they definitely don’t dominate the story so don’t worry if you prefer mostly mystery. A sweet (in more ways than one) read and an entertaining mystery that will have you hunting for a stash of chocolate in your pantry! Also, three cheers for the endearing Miss Watson!
