One of People’s Best Books to Read in February

A dangerous alliance between a Vampyre bride and an Alpha Werewolf becomes a love deep enough to sink your teeth into in this new paranormal romance from the #1
New York Times bestselling author of Love, Theoretically and The Love Hypothesis.

Misery Lark, the only daughter of the most powerful Vampyre councilman of the Southwest, is an outcast—again. Her days of living in anonymity among the Humans are over: she has been called upon to uphold a historic peacekeeping alliance between the Vampyres and their mortal enemies, the Weres, and she sees little choice but to surrender herself in the exchange—again...

Weres are ruthless and unpredictable, and their Alpha, Lowe Moreland, is no exception. He rules his pack with absolute authority, but not without justice. And, unlike the Vampyre Council, not without feeling. It’s clear from the way he tracks Misery’s every movement that he doesn’t trust her. If only he knew how right he was….

Because Misery has her own reasons to agree to this marriage of convenience, reasons that have nothing to do with politics or alliances, and everything to do with the only thing she's ever cared about. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get back what’s hers, even if it means a life alone in Were territory…alone with the wolf.

Originally from Italy, she lived in Germany and Japan before moving to the U.S. to pursue a Ph.D. in neuroscience. She recently became a professor, which absolutely terrifies her. This book made me go buy every Ali hazelwood book
I FLIPPING LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH

its just so different from my usual style of reading and did it make me go and buy almost every Ali hazelwood book? Yes it did lmaoHer writing is absolutely unbelievableMisery, the FMC in this book, the emotionless vamprye, WAS SO FUNNY LOL I cant tell you how many times her personality and sarcasm literally made me laugh out loud. I related so much to her character. Her finding where she belongs (which is totally not where she SHOULD belong) had me so invested. It was so cute man.LOWE - ugh omg. I just love him to pieces. Did he make some questionable decisions sometimes? Yep. Did I want to punch him on occasion? Also yep. But did you absolutely know how much he loved misery? YOU DID, and IT WAS A LOT.This is fantasy romance but SO romcom vibes as well. Such a good mix and I enjoyed it so much I absolutely know you guys will too.

📙 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: This is a standalone, although the ending may hint to a new book, based on the MFC’s best friend, Serena. We’ll see, so stay tuned…
📘 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗲: Paranormal (inter-species) romance
📔 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: Arranged marriage, enemies-to-lovers (sort of), fated mates, found family, slow-burn romance, he falls first, and PEANUT BUTTER.
S𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹: 3/5 🌶🌶🌶
My overall rate: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Why? Excellent pacing, unexpected plot twists, funny bantering, crisp narrative, awesome romance.
Pet peeve:🙃dialogue tags. Hazelwood, at times, generates long dialogues without them, and it’s hard to follow who is talking. It doesn’t happen often but it threw me out of the story, having to go back and piece out who was saying what.

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Misery, daughter of the Vampire lord, has spent her life serving as collateral in the human world. A vampire child is sent to the human world while a human child is sent to the vampire world. In this fashion, no one attacks no one. However, Misery did this for two decades. When she returns, she belongs nowhere: not human enough, not vampire enough. The only one who understands her is her best friend since childhood, Serena, the orphan child who accompanied her so Misery wouldn’t be lonely. Well, until Serena mysteriously disappears and Misery uses her computer savvy to locate her…to no avail until a clue emerges that throws her into an arranged marriage with the Alpha of a powerful werewolf pack. So, Misery goes from being a collateral to the human to becoming a collateral for the werewolves.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I loved Bride and read it in three days. Misery reminded me of Celeana in Throne of Glass or Ava in Frost: fearless, opinionated, and strong (but hiding their emotional scars behind a mask of bravado). Misery’s internal dialogue is so funny. Same for Lowe’s. Great character growth as she goes from being an uncaring, unfeeling vampire to a kind, affectionate one. The Alpha, Lowe, goes from being a biased werewolf to understanding that everything he’d learned about vampires is, well, wrong. I loved the social commentary connected to being open to diversity and new experiences. Both Misery and Lowe embark on a journey to understand themselves and others, and it is precious to see them grow as individuals and see them slowly fall in love.

As someone who has been reading exclusively romantasy for the past year, I bought this book on a whim, knowing that I don’t particularly care for contemporary settings, but with the hype this book was getting on Instagram, I thought “a good book is a good book”. Coming from reading all of Sarah J Maas’ ACOTAR books, and Jennifer Armentrout, both writers who tend to be very descriptive even overly so, both in describing the environment and the characters’ internal monologue/thought process, the more “lean” style of writing in this book was different for me. The first third of the book was a bit boring for me, because I found the world building to be not enough, and that the writer chose to speed through or “skip forward” interactions that I would have liked to read through instead of being left to my own imagination. I would describe the beginning half as low stakes, chick lit. I am someone who likes to read a detailed interaction between the main characters in a romance novel because I feel like that helps the emotions and tensions culminate to that sweet moment when they express their feelings for each other. In this book, I found myself having to “fill in the blanks” or use my own imagination a lot on how emotions were displayed. The writer says things like “I know he was happy”, and I found myself asking “how does she just know that? How exactly is he “radiating happiness” ? However, the last third to fourth of the book did come with lots of twists and high emotions which pleasantly surprised me and kept me hooked so that I ended up binge reading to finish it. And at the end, I could say I wanted more, and would buy a sequel if Ali Hazelwood decided to write one! I did appreciate how the main character was more even keeled than some other female main characters in romance novels who tend to come off as impulsive, stubborn to the point of being defiant just for the sake of being so and almost inconsiderate (immediately saying no when they are told or asked to do something by the love interest simply because “nobody tells me what to do” without thinking about why the person might be asking that of them). I found Misery to be mature in her emotional reactions and not impulsive or insecure. She can be quite flippant and casual in her dialogue even during serious moments, but this generally works in the book as part of her character as someone who isn’t afraid and doesn’t sweat the small or medium stuff. She does come off a bit as a “know it all” but her intelligence is supposed to be one of her strengths and she actually shows it with her dialogue, rather than us simply being told that the main character is intelligent even though she doesn’t exactly seem clever by any of her words or actions in the book.

Overall, this was a pleasant quick read, and though the beginning required some dedication to plow through, the ending left me wishing for more! I thought the plot itself was fantastic and the conflicts were generally mature and not cliche and frustrating where two people could simply actually have a purposeful conversation and avoid a whole lot of drama (one of my major pet peeves but tends to be like a land mine in romance novel land). This book would have been a 5 for me if the world building was a bit more descriptive and emotions and perceptions were also described more thoroughly.

I was beyond excited when the end of this book indicated there would be another one in this world (different couples, this book was complete/no cliffhangers), because I am absolutely here for it. This would be classified as a paranormal romance, and the author did a fabulous job of world building on a way that in no way distracted from the phenomenal story. This world has long-term adversarial relationships between Humans, Vampires, and Weres (werewolf shifters). To help broker a truce, the vampires and humans have had a "hostage exchange" program where each sends the child relative of a high-up government official of each side for 10 years. The daughter of the head of the vampire council "graduated" from that about 7 years ago, and now works quietly (and disguised) as a penetration tester for a human computer company. Her quiet life is upended when her father's guard disrupts her at work to make her "home" to convince her to act in another "hostage exchange", this time as a marriage-in-name-only to facilitate a truce with the Weres. She agrees because her only friend recently disappeared, and the only clue she finds is a partial name that is remarkably similar to the name of the new Alpha she is being forced to marry. I would classify this as slow burn, with elements of fated mates, but Ibgeel that undersells how glorious this book is. There is a lovely self-deprecating humor throughout, plot twists that do NOT feel contrived, subtle and natural both world and emotional building, and well-developed and nuanced main and side characters. And it may have been slow burn, but when it gets there, it is 🔥 🔥 🔥 . It will be a painful wait for the book on the next couple!

I loved it. Really enjoyed the unique world. The characters and overall story. I'm happy to see there will be another story for another set of characters. It was the perfect amount of world building and politics. I smiled and laughed and the tension was written so well.

My only complaint and I guess I can rationalize it was that he was so wishy washy with her almost bordering on dishonest. Had he not been written so well with his good guy stamp fully intact I would've deducted a star because it would have bordered on toxic but thankfully it all came around in this end.

I was litteraly giggling every 5 minutes, I had way too much fun reading this.

I can already see why some people won't like this book but honestly it just gave me everything Twilight never gave (while it being absolutely nothing like it but if you grew up with Twilight you'll understand).
Also, Misery (the fmc yes that's her name) is EVERYTHING !!
