Strange things begin to happen the minute young Kay Harker boards the train to go home for Christmas and finds himself under observation by two very shifty-looking characters. Arriving at his destination, the boy is immediately accosted by a bright-eyed old man with a mysterious message: “The wolves are running.” Soon danger is everywhere, as a gang of criminals headed by the notorious wizard Abner Brown and his witch wife Sylvia Daisy Pouncer gets to work. What does Abner Brown want? The magic box that the old man has entrusted to Kay, which allows him to travel freely not only in space but in time, too. The gang will stop at nothing to carry out their plan, even kidnapping Kay’s friend, the tough little Maria Jones, and threatening to cancel Christmas celebrations altogether. But with the help of his allies, including an intrepid mouse, a squadron of Roman soldiers, the legendary Herne the Hunter, and the inventor of the Box of Delights himself, Kay just may be able rescue his friend, foil Abner Brown’s plot, and save Christmas, too.

At once a thriller, a romp, and a spellbinding fantasy,
The Box of Delights is a great English children’s book and a perfect Christmas treat.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A wintry fantasy classic." —Michael Dirda, Washington Post, List of 66 Favorite Books

“This witty and wonderful children’s novel by the onetime Poet Laureate of the UK is widely beloved on the other side of the pond, but lesser known here. A travesty, that, since it’s a magic box in itself: a magical adventure that begins with a boy on his way home for Christmas, stopped by a man who implores him, 'And now, Master Harker, of Seekings, now that the Wolves are Running, as you will have seen, perhaps you would do something to stop their Bite?' Enter wizards and witches, mice, Roman soldiers, the toughest little girl you’ll ever meet, and Christmas just might be saved after all.” —
Flavorwire

“The book that always had the magic of a snowy English Christmas…. It’s still a lovely book, magical and funny, to be read by anybody of any age.” —The Horn Book

"This classic of English children's literature, sadly overlooked by most on this side of the Atlantic, has just been reissued in a beautiful edition by the New York Review Children's Collection...Although "The Box of Delights" was first published in 1935, Masefield's intoxicating prose has lost none of its pull...in this wonderful tale of bravery and intrigue that deserves to become another staple of the holidays." --
The San Francisco Chronicle

"First published in 1935, The Box of Delights by John Masefield is newly available. In the adventure-laden Christmas story, Kay Harker (also the protagonist of Masefield's The Midnight Folk) returns from boarding school for the holidays and becomes involved in a struggle with a wizard and witch who wish to possess the eponymous box." --Publishers Weekly

"This uniquely imaginative tale would be a delight for fans of old-fashioned, English Literature and could be compared to the likes of A Christmas Carol and the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe." --CLEAR Reviews

“[Masefield’s] most popular children’s book…Original and remarkable.” –The New York Review of Books

“Masefield's novel, a plum pudding of strange adventures, English legend, and spiritual feeling, should be more widely appreciated” –The Washington Post

The Box of Delights' is based on a 1935 story by famous English poet John Masefield, and it's crammed full of fantasy and adventures, almost as if every known children's story had been combined in one. There's space travel and time travel and evil villains and holiday sentiments and adventures, adventures, adventures.” –The Seattle Times

“Every chapter in this book is marvelous, but the real delight derives from Masefield’s style and the idiosyncratic, colorful speech of his various characters…Lovely stuff.” –The Washington Post

“This book is a writer’s oft-raided treasure trove…the world’s best ‘crossover book’…It does time-travel better than Narnia…The story floats on brilliant, eccentric dialogue and…never loses its snowy-Christmas, Nutcracker enchantment…” –The Independent (UK)

“Masefield the children’s writers is unbeatable.” –The Daily Telegraph (UK)

If you want something unique to read, this is for you. Better yet read to your child and keep their imagination going.

The Box of Delights (1935) by John Masefield is a miracle and a masterpiece of magical literature. I admit to getting lost in the narrative. I was complete absorbed in Kay Harker’s adventures. The actual box of delights allows the holder to travel quick or small or both – the depiction of magical and enchanted journeys held me enthralled. We encounter Herne the Hunter, the Lady of the Oak Tree, lions, unicorns and talking animals. There are kidnappings, chases, robberies and great escapes. I set the book aside reluctantly and came back to it with great anticipation. The evil Abner Brown and his henchmen were indeed creepy and sinister – really quite scary. The final chapter had me in tears – I just wanted to be there literally experiencing the joy and wonder. Now I must read The Midnight Folk by the same author.

Very much a product of its time - the world of social deference and comic policemen can have you yearning for something very painful to happen to Master Kay but that's the nature of the genre. Brilliant imagination and no grasp of real time at all. Ultimately it's a vehicle for poetic imagination at a fairly superficial level. I greatly prefer it's more mature predecessor The Midnight Folk.

What a delightful fantasy adventure, often quite funny as well as wonderfully dramatic. It’s a real gem from the past.

I have been looking for an unabridged copy of this that I could afford for ages.
Why on earth anyone would abridge it in the first place is beyond me. I was very happy to find this copy, big plus that it is a hardback.
The book was used, but clearly never opened. Very sad that this great children's book was given to three children who never so much as turned a page in it. All of my children and grandchildren and a fair few friends of both have read this now.

Much more descriptive and adventurous in spirit, than "Railway Children". Can't wait to get another of his books. Reminiscent of a time now gone in England. After reading I felt like I could go outside and find that I had been transported back in time.
Good to snuggle into a hoodie on a rainy day for a read with a Hot Chocolate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recapture the magic!
Reviewed in Canada on June 18, 2023
For me, this story takes me back many years to when a superb radio version was produced on "Children's Hour", the old BBC children's radio program, heard daily from 5 -6 P.M in the 1940's. If a recording is available (?), hear it first, for the atmosphere generated by the brilliantly skilful radio-handling of the tale. Otherwise----read on, and enjoy the fantasy! I would rate it suitable for children of all ages!
