Well, how good was that! I’ve always been a fan of Bob’s work and always had an impression of the kind of person he was behind the performer: funny, tough, clever, down-to-earth. And Away brings out another side of the man: vulnerable, shy, caring and very human. He also writes with brilliant clarity, warmth and an extraordinary ear for not only the comic (no surprise there), but also an eye for a telling vignette on life.

At once hilarious, enlightening and touching.

And just the right amount of pocket meats.

If you love Bob Mortimer...

This audiobook memoir is excellent, it's basically Bob telling you stories for hours! There are some 'extended versions' of the wild tales you've heard on WILTY, and lots more of his (somewhat less hilarious) life experiences. Good stuff!

Let me start by telling you that I'm an American fan of Bob's who had come to know him through WILTY, Gone Fishing and subsequently explored his work with Moire (Reeves). I've loved Bob's stories on Would I Lie To You and enjoyed the sweet and silly moments of Gone Fishing but I do not really appreciate his other TV work (Bang Bang, Smell of..., House of Fools). It's just not my kind of goofy. I was excited for this book but had tempered my expectations realizing it couldn't possibly be one WILTY-style story after another. While it's nice to hear Bob speak and I experienced a few laugh out loud moments (Bob's Buddy Hackett sounding magician and the tale of the lucky carpet) there was a lot that felt flat and uninteresting. I cannot imagine having read this even though I would done so with Bob's voice in my mind. I'm happy I did the audiobook version. At first listening to Bob breathe/wheeze was almost enough to put me off but it either got better or I just got over it.

In summary, enjoyable moments with some great Mortimer style silly but not as exciting or funny as I would have hoped. Don't hate me Bob. I love you. I will follow you anywhere and you never fail to make me smile. The best moments are just too good to not wish there were more of them.
