1) most seller books of this volume are NOT the same as the image -- THIS IS ALMOST ALWAYS TRUE

2) Sometimes VOLUME ONE of Angelique is int TWO Volumes -- and you must ask -- the vendor likely doesn't know either -- so ask specifically (a) title exactly as on inside cover (b) number of pages (c) year printed -- even then, you may not get a full volume one

3) going price varies from $50 to as much as $300 -- I always shop about 3 to 6 months for Volume ONE

And after finding it this time?? NOT SELLING IT AGAIN

It is in ebook form in the FRENCH (2019) but not in English. Hopefully they publisher will do that.... the demand is there I think internationally for English edition.

******
NOW ABOUT THE BOOK. This is HISTORICAL FICTION. So in Dewey Decimal system at a public library - that is where it is shelved if they even HAVE a copy. NOT with Romance novels. (I'm a retired librarian. LOL) It is passionate and can have violence in it. This is during church witchcraft inquisitions, French Revolution, poverty in the streets, fighting for survival during a revolution. You may find her behavior shocking but she took care of her family as best as she could.

*** WHEN I REREAD BOOK WILL TRY TO UPDATE. It's been over 3 years so.... even though I've read it many times a fresh review is due.

*** OUT OF PRINT IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ***

**** Expect condition to be yellowed pages and with foxing -- you'll be LUCKY to get a clean tight copy -- there just are not that many of them out there *** Most from 1980 or so. Some from 1960-1970.***

ASK THE SELLER FOR DETAILS.... :)

I first read this when I was perhaps 13 years old. I proceeded to read the entire series. Looking back, not merely were these enthralling books to read, but they actually influenced me in many of the choices I made in my life by convincing me that a woman could do anything, survive anything, experience everything. I do not believe that a better historical romance has -- or will -- ever be written and I mourn that these are now all out of print.

I too grew up with Angelique - and have reread the books many times, including just lately - just got back from a trip to France to visit my daughter. I am privileged to own the complete translated in English set, and multiple copies of some - snapped up with joy at a library sale, etc.
Upon actually googling Angelique when I came back, I found out that, contrary to my belief, this set of books was actually very well thought of in its day, being on the best seller lists in France and Britian as well as the New York Times for quite a while. It's not till a decade or so after its heyday that it was relegated to Barbara Cartland Land, and lost respect. Several movies were made of it, and according to the reviews, French people think of it the same way we might think of the African Queen - a classic to watch. However, the plot deviated more and more from the story line as the movies went on. I'm not sure I would have liked to see how Joffrey was played, and by whom. Would anybody have really done him correctly according to the picture in my head?
So, I have been rereading the books since I've come home, and, in the first book especially, have been remembering Paris. Of course, Angelique never lived, but the authors did their homework. I stood on the square in front of Notre Dame and, along with enjoying the scenery (wow) and pigeons (not), held in mind's eye the picture of the Comte of Toulouse singing there as he was brought to confess. Right across from there is the Hotel Dieu, where she had Cantor. And we knocked around on the Pont Neuf, the banks of the Seine, and the Ile de le Cite and Ile de Louis, where Hortense lived, as well as walking in the corridors of the Louvre and the Tulleries. Did not make it to Versailles or La Rochelle, even though I was pretty close to there. A lot of the suburbs in Paris still have the same names: St. Denis, etc.
The one thing I wish is that I had mentioned how much I had enjoyed the books to our French hosts, who would have evidently remembered them in their heyday, in the same way that you'd have to be in a cave not to have heard of the Twilight series. I was still thinking of them in their Harlequin Romance costume, before I came home and did the research. We might have had some interesting discussions!
I love the stories, but I think that sometimes the language is a bit stilted, which I am assuming is because of the translation.

Great book! It was great when I read it the first time in the 70s and it's still a great story.

As we follow thw heroine from childhood to mid twenties, we learn a great deal about 17th century France. There is enough intrigue, adventure, romance and even violence here to make this novel'un- put- downable'!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable

Romance, adventures, head-strong and beautiful heroine that has both the charm and substance, tantalizing love and a life full of twists and turns. Set in 17th century France during Louis King the Sun's reign. The authors have done a very good historical research to provide intricate details of the life and events of the era, so it makes sense more believable. Although, of course, the fact that men just fall in love with Angelique at first sight and can never forget her for the rest of their lives is just a bit unrealistic. Regardless of how beautiful she is. Well, I guess it's called fiction for a reason. :) Very enjoyable read and one of the best in the series about Angelique - a starting point of her adventures and unpredictable life, grand setting for her long journey and character development through many books to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Angelique began
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 31, 2013
A story set in the lawlessness and intrigue rife in 17th century France, Angeliqe is married to a rich and powerful Comte. He ends up being imprisioned by the Inquisition and sentenced ..... With her beauty and courage she vows revenge. An unputdownable book that keeps you spellbound. Still good today as it was in the past. Thoroughly recommend this for a good read.
