Discover what it’s really like to live and work on the road in a camper van full time from eco-vanlifer and founder of the Diversify Vanlife movement, Noami Grevemberg.

Feeling dissatisfied with her office job and her “stationary home,” in 2016 Noami Grevemberg took a bold step. She quit her job, sold her belongings, and set out in her 1985 VW Vanagon to pursue a life of simplicity and travel with her husband and German Shepherd by her side.

In her years living fulltime on the road, Noami has become an expert in the many aspects of vanlife. In her book
Living the Vanlife, she digs into all aspects of the lifestyle, from getting over the uncomfortable feeling of uncertainty, to creating a sustainable, thriving life of adventure and a captivating path of choosing whatever it is you truly want for yourself. Through personal stories and actionable advice, Noami candidly and compassionately demonstrates for readers that challenging the "status quo” means taking bold steps, venturing out of your comfort zone, taking risks, and living intentionally. As a Trinidadian immigrant, Noami also takes a practical look at life on the road as a BIPOC navigating many intersections and speaks to topics like converting a van to fit your specific needs, budgeting for vanlife, finding employment, staying safe, and building a supportive community on the road.

Featuring evocative full-color photographs of Noami’s journey,
Living the Vanlife is an inclusive and celebratory look at an increasingly popular way of life.

Review

“With lush, full-color photos and a conversational, friendly tone, Living the Vanlife will undoubtedly appeal to anyone considering opting out of the traditional work-life model.” —Shelf Awarness

"This spirited guide is animated by Grevemberg’s passion for a nomadic life. . . The restless are sure to catch the travel bug. " -
Publisher's Weekly

“Brimming with honesty, heartful stories, and captivating photographs, Noami Grevemberg’s
Living the Vanlife is a stunning celebration of the joys and meaning that can be found in embracing this alternative, sustainable lifestyle. This book is a must-read for anyone looking to slow down and embrace the beauty that comes with living with intention by hitting the road.” – Christine Platt, author of The Afrominimalist’s Guide to Living With Less

“Wild and adventurous in all the best ways, Noami’s story will inspire every reader to step outside their comfort zone, hit the road, and live intentionally.” -
Shelby Stanger, host of REI Co-Op's Wild Ideas Worth Living and author of Will to Wild

As a vanlifer myself, I loved reading about Naomi's joys and hardships while living in her Volkswagen campervan. Vanlife is growing in popularity, and while wonderful in the freedom and adventure it allows, it also has it's fair share of challenges. Naomi doesn't gloss over these challenges in her book and instead, brings you with her on her journey to make van life sustainable and pleasurable for her and her husband. I loved her tips and advice, plus, the beautiful color photographs immerse you within Naomi's story. A great read for anyone thinking of living the van life or curious about how others do it.
-Kristin Hanes, publisher of The Wayward Home

"Noami’s long been a leader in the world of vanlife. She’s a gifted educator and community builder who, in everything she does, strives to make the lifestyle more accessible for anyone who wants to partake. And this beautiful book is no exception. Part memoir, part how-to guide, in Living the Vanlife Noami subverts expectations by giving us more than a dreamy veneer of what it means to hit the road. Instead, she shares the nitty gritty of their travels with candor, grace, and humor. And by including sidebars and information for individuals who have long been marginalized in vanlife, Noami makes sure everyone is taken along for the ride."
— Gale Straub, author of She Explores: Adventures on the Road and in the Wild

About the Author

Noami J. Grevemberg is a vanlife OG (since 2016), remote entrepreneur, and dog mom, living on the road in her classic Volkswagen Vanagon. Born and raised in a remote village on the island of Trinidad, she believes in nature’s ability to heal and inspire. As a child, her favorite pastime was weekly poetry recitals by oil lantern in her grandmother’s living room, which invoked a passion for storytelling. After leaving behind the corporate grind to live in a van full-time, Noami rekindled her love for storytelling—a gift she now uses as a tool to break down barriers and cultivate intentionally inclusive spaces. Noami is the proud founder of the Diversify Vanlife community organization, a self-taught photographer, avid outdoorist, and she considers herself an accidental minimalist. When she’s not hunting for WiFi or exploring the backroads of America with her partner and German Shepherd pup, you can find Noami in her tiny van-kitchen cooking up fiery cultural dishes inspired by her Afro-Indo Caribbean roots.

I thought it was an amazing story. Classic rags to riches, but vanlife. I also learned a lot about this burgeoning lifestyle.

Reading this book brings a smile. The writing is good and the thoughts well developed. I'm a 4-year, full-time urban car dweller; based first in Florida and then California with a year on the highways back and forth and back again. Noami's book reminds me of why I am still in this lifestyle - love of the simple things, intentional living, and being close to nature. I loved when she spoke of not having a bucket list because this life allows one to achieve goals and indulge desires today, not waiting for a distant tomorrow. For the newcomer to vanlife, all the things in the book are for you. For the not quite sure, there is the unveiling of the dream into a clear picture for you. For the seasoned vanlifer, you will see yourself in the pages of her story and remember your own reasons for living so intentionally. Soak a little within the pages of the book or dive in from beginning to end. I'm doing both, enjoying the story and how it makes me feel, while focus reading different chapters or reread my highlighted passages. The lessons are deep. I definitely enjoyed the work. It's a book that has a place on the shelf for rereading.

I love how descriptive this book is! On every page, I can hear, see, smell, taste, and feel what Noami is writing about. She makes me want to explore more of the world, connect with nature and people more, and get to know myself even more. She speaks on things that I have felt and never put into words, and she exposes me to parts of myself that I hadn’t realized. This is a great book for van dwellers and those curious about the lifestyle, but it is a book that anyone can find value in.

Reading 'Living the Vanlife' was an experience that moved me deeply, far beyond what I expected from a book. Noami Grevemberg doesn't just share her journey of embracing vanlife; she invites us into her soul, showing us the raw beauty and genuine challenges of this unconventional path. Her story resonated with me on a personal level, painting a vivid picture of a life filled with courage, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of happiness. Noami's transition from a routine life to one of freedom and adventure on the road is narrated with such passion and honesty, it felt like I was right there with her, experiencing every triumph and setback.

What truly sets this book apart is Noami's ability to connect with the reader through her experiences as a Black-identifying queer immigrant womxn, adding a rich, diverse perspective to the narrative of vanlife. Her words are a blend of inspiration and practical wisdom, accompanied by stunning photographs that capture the essence of her journey. This book is not just a guide to vanlife; it's a heartfelt invitation to explore what it means to live life on your own terms. It left me inspired, reflective, and filled with a sense of joy and wonder at the possibilities life holds when we dare to follow our dreams.

Absolutely loved 'Living the Vanlife' by Noami Grevemberg! It's like taking a road trip with a friend who's seen it all. Noami’s leap from a regular job to van life is super inspiring. She doesn't just show the Instagram-worthy parts; she gets real about the challenges and how to overcome them. Her stories as a Trinidadian immigrant add a unique twist, making it more than just a travel log. And the photos? Gorgeous! Whether you're thinking about van life or just love a good adventure story, this book's a must-read. It's honest, down-to-earth, and really makes you think about what living intentionally means.

I love love love this book. I read all genres and for me, it was the perfect mix of a couple. I took notes, tabbed paged, and reflected on my past experiences traveling within the US. It was refreshing to hear of similar experiences and my feelings in those moments validated. I will absolutely utilize all the resources provided while traveling or/ and everyday life in general.

Noami has the gift of connecting stories through words. Through her journey into and through vanlife, she offers insights into a powerful origin story and guidance on embarking on one's own. As someone who just started living on the road again after a 3-year break, this book couldn't come at a better time. I'm grateful to find a friend in this book, a friend with whom I can share this journey.

Naomi does such a wonderful job of engaging readers with her descriptive writing and relatable spirit. Readers receive the gift of being transported into the world of vanlife with every page while having their heart tugged in ways that challenge us to be more curious, more conscious, and more careful about the way we life. As someone who spent quite some time on the road, I love how this book is as welcoming to aspiring vanlifers as it is a valuable read for those who have lived the experience themselves. It is a beautiful book and would make a brilliant gift for a curious spirit or an aspiring adventurer. I highly recommend this book for folks from all walks of life - even if road travel isn't your thing, you will not be disappointed.
