A jaded spy and a shell-shocked country doctor team up to solve a murder in postwar England.James Sommers returned from the war with his nerves in tatters. All he wants is to retreat to the quiet village of his childhood and enjoy the boring, predictable life of a country doctor. The last thing in the world he needs is a handsome stranger who seems to be mixed up with the first violent death the village has seen in years. It certainly doesn't help that this stranger is the first person James has wanted to touch since before the war.The war may be over for the rest of the world, but Leo Page is still busy doing the dirty work for one of the more disreputable branches of the intelligence service. When his boss orders him to cover up a murder, Leo isn't expecting to be sent to a sleepy village. After a week of helping old ladies wind balls of yarn and flirting with a handsome doctor, Leo is in danger of forgetting what he really is and why he's there. He's in danger of feeling things he has no business feeling. A person who burns his identity after every job can't set down roots. As he starts to untangle the mess of secrets and lies that lurk behind the lace curtains of even the most peaceful-seeming of villages, Leo realizes that the truths he's about to uncover will affect his future and those of the man he's growing to care about.

I read Cat Sebastian for her gentle, honest take on mental bugbears, her characters who are drawn to each other despite/because of those bugbears (sometimes with a dash of "oh god it's you isn't it, well this is inconvenient", which is one of my favorite ways to recognize love), and especially for her beautiful language. She writes sentences that make me gasp, or laugh, or nod. I become a person that gestures and pleads with her ereader in public, and that is on Sebastian, how very dare she.

And those things are all present in Hither, Page. I see it as a mystery with a strong romantic subplot, peppered with sometimes-struggling characters who are trying to do their best within the context of their current lives, which are almost ludicrously different than they were two years before. I mean, trying to figure out who you are when you aren't spying or tending to wounded soldiers during war is probably challenge enough, let alone trying to solve murders in your sanctuary village that you’d hoped would be murder-free.

I appreciated how strongly she grounded the book in the era. England still had rationing, and some peoples' loyalties were as yet uncertain; if there’s a thread running through the book, I think it’s that as much as everyone might want to put the war behind them, its ramifications would never actually ease for everybody.

And that is where the romance was just right, to me: to be able to turn to each other and be honest about what parts of you may have broken during the war, and to trust the other person to carry that information with love.

And then to solve some damn murders together.

If D.E. Stevenson and Agatha Christie collaborated to make a cozy village murder mystery with a light romance, this would be close to that. The romantic component, of course, for those two authors would be M/F and this one is M/M, but that's a minor point for me. Love is love, attraction is attraction, whatever one's orientation. All I ask for in a relationship is that it be caring and respectful.

This appears to be the first in an intended series, since HITHER PAGE is Page and Sommers, Book 1. So who are Page and Sommers? Page is Leo Page, a spy working for one of the "more disreputable branches of the intelligence services." Leo, an orphan of unknown heritage, was recruited years ago by British intelligence and has been doing their dirty work since. Now he has been sent to the sleepy village of Wychcomb St. Mary, a village which, apparently, isn't as sleepy as it seems.

A certain Mildred Hoggett has been murdered and Leo is sent to investigate. Mildred had worked as charwoman in the home of Colonel Bertram Armstrong, a man under observation by the agency because of his suspected collusion with the Germans. So Leo is to find out the why and who of the murder. While he is there, another murder, obviously related to this, takes place to complicate things.

And Sommers? Well, that's Dr. James Sommers, PTSD-suffering veteran of the war who is haunted by the carnage he witnessed while doing his best to save lives of soldiers of that war. He has moved back to his home village to serve as doctor there and try to recover some semblance of normalcy, rather unsuccessfully so far. So we have a rather innocent, honorable and good village doctor and a world-weary, jaded spy who end up collaborating in solving the mystery and who also end up in each other's arms.

The mystery is interesting but not as compelling as the characters, both main and secondary, populating the village. Everyone is well drawn, many are colorful and quirky, almost all have been affected in some way or other by the war. I have read a few of this author's historical romances and enjoyed them, but this one appealed to me more, probably because I was in the mood for a quiet, character-driven little mystery. The writing is well above average and cozily done. I'll be looking out for #2 in this series.

It's December 1946, the war is over but still very much present in the everyday life of the residents of the English village of Wychcomb St. Mary. The men came back from the war bearing the scars of what they'd seen and done, and Dr. James Sommers is one of them. He had hoped to find peace and quiet, but it didn't last very long. One suspicious death then an obvious murder rattle James' peaceful existence, but not nearly as much as the appearance of the mysterious Leo Page...

Dame Agatha Christie, wherever she is, must be smiling. Cat Sebastian is one of my favourite historical authors, and with HITHER, PAGE she leaves Regency England for the twentieth century and cozy mysteries, and it is a literary triumph! It is like having a brand new Agatha Christie novel with a dash of queer romance; Cat Sebastian was born to write this type of story. Ms. Sebastian captures the very essence of the genre, has the vernacular down pat, a perfect grasp of the era; the execution is absolutely flawless. You have a vicarage, a gameskeeper, a nosy housekeeper, a country doctor, two marvellous spinsters - the delightful Misses Pickering and Delacourt - and many wonderful characters, some who naturally have a few secrets. Leo is a cynical covert operative, he's also quite flirtatious, while James is affable and sweet, but very much affected by his war experience. Leo and the good doctor see what they are quickly - that they both like men - but the times being what they are, they must be careful and discreet. The romance is a glorious slow burn, as both Leo and James have work to do, mysteries to solve, and a mutual attraction to deal with.

HITHER, PAGE is so very English, feels so genuine, it's a tribute to Agatha Christie's oeuvre without being a pastiche or a copy; there's even a tiny wink to the illustrious Mrs. Christie. I find it hard to believe, but I think this is Ms. Sebastian's best writing ever. There was just a tiny little thing I bothered me: early on, when our two heroes are referred to as James and Page. I can't explain why it confused me, but it did. I would have preferred James-Leo and Sommers-Page. And literally that is the only microscopic flaw I could find in this outstanding book. The prose is literate, sophisticated, and the tone and vocabulary astonishingly accurate, as is every period detail. HITHER, PAGE is a quick read that left me with a smile on my face and joy in my heart. I can't wait for the future installments because Page & Summers promises to be fabulous!

5.0 out of 5 stars Empolgante e bem escrito

Amei o livro!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved the setting and the whole atmosphere

This book can best be described as cozy - it's exactly the kind of read that would be perfect to have with a cup of tea on a lazy, rainy afternoon. I loved the characterization of the main characters as well as of the background characters, and I was so sad when I finished reading it because I just wanted to live in that world a little longer!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty close to unputdownable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 21, 2019
A sleepy country village should be a picturesque, gentle place for, James Sommers, a war-scarred doctor to recover from his invisible wounds. But the war has left its mark everywhere and the village is full of damaged people struggling with their own demons. Murder in the wrong place at the wrong time brings in Leo Page, a shady secret service agent, to unravel their tangled secrets. He is drawn to the vulnerable, innocent doctor, so different from the cynical, jaded spy and yet they are both adrift and rootless after the war. Leo is more used to dangerous missions in brutal places. Village life, and his growing affection for the doctor, soon have him questioning his mission.
In the best tradition of these books, there is a twisted country house murder to solve, lots of skeletons in cupboards and dark secrets waiting to be uncovered.
This is a slow slow burn – there is no quick romantic pay off at 33%. The attraction between the two main characters sparks along for most of the book and it is a really good mystery too. There are a host of very likeable characters, I just really enjoyed being in the drab but cosy post-war world that Cat Sebastian has created for this story. I have enjoyed other books by this author before but this one is a real class act, a pretty much perfect romance and very well written, it is pretty close to unputdownable. Why else would I be googling 'three hare windows' at two in the morning?

Anyway...
Hey! Author! Write quicker! I know this book as only just come out, but we need more, like, right now...
(I don't imagine that authors read their Amazon reviews (or that it would be wise to do so), or that they are not writing as quickly as they can already, it being their livelihood and all, but who knows, worth a try.)

5.0 out of 5 stars 1950年代のコッツウォルズで起きた事件の真相を巡る謎解き。イギリスの古典的ミステリの趣きもあるMMロマンスです
Reviewed in Japan on February 6, 2023
