Demented Hardcover – January 1, 2004
by
Jacky Fleming
(Author)
Have the inevitable signs of aging taken you completely by surprise? Do emails from grade school acquaintances precipitate an instant mid-life crisis? Has your computer introduced levels of frustration into your life that you never dreamed were possible? Does the sound of orchestrated easy-listening music while you're on hold for half an hour drive you to despair? Then this demented cartoon narrative may help slightly, although how I can't imagine. This is an absolute must for the middle-aged but immature woman and her bewildered partner—or anyone obsessed with looking on the Internet at properties for sale in sunny countries.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Wasted on the young but a real pearl for the rest of us!

Bought this as a birthday present for someone who is, like me, no longer in the first flush of youth. I had a read myself (natch!) and loved it. It's well-observed humour and reminds me of the work of Claire Bretécher. It's one of those books that showcases things that you do and feel but that you didn't realise were also experienced by other people. My friend's birthday isn't until August but I don't know if I can hold off giving it to her before then.

イギリス版「負け犬」?
Reviewed in Japan on February 21, 2005

Jackie Fleming is a brilliant cartoonist and does some wonderful jokes. She uses very few lines but the images are instantly perfect. There are some pictures which have hardly any ink on the page but the expression of the person is absolutely correct. Some of the jokes are quite verbal and again there is enormous economy with not a wasted or ill-chosen word. I think I have everything she has published but if I hear of another collection I will buy it immediately.

The funniest yet!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 5, 2004
I have always been a great fan of Jacky Fleming's books.
This is the funniest one yet, exploring many of the puzzles and irritations of 21st century life. A middle-aged woman [is that you Jacky?] contemplates the world through newly-prescribed glasses and doesn't like what she sees, whether it be supermarkets or Friends Reunited.
Supported by partner Kenny, and almost upstaged by an ever present, and mostly snoozing, white cat, our cartoon heroine delights us with her wry take on her life [and ours].
Don't read this book while drinking tea or coffee. It'll come down your nose.
