The scope of criminal justice surveillance has expanded rapidly in recent decades. At the same time, the use of big data has spread across a range of fields, including finance, politics, healthcare, and marketing. While law enforcement's use of big data is hotly contested, very little is known about how the police actually use it in daily operations and with what consequences.

About the Author

Sarah Brayne is Assistant Professor of Sociology at The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining the faculty at UT-Austin, Brayne was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Microsoft Research. Brayne is the founder and director of the Texas Prison Education Initiative, a group of faculty and students who volunteer to teach college classes in prisons throughout Texas.

This book is fascinating. The author conducted rigorous research and provides a detailed account of how the police use big data. It's analytically incisive and some of the takeaways about the social consequences of police use of big data are scary. Also, despite it being an academic book, it was actually a pleasure to read.

Not quite finished yet but this book provides a first-hand account of how the LAPD especially, as well as other departments mentioned, typically use the huge amounts of data that are now accessible to them, from the custom-built Machine Learning systems designed to help the military and police to "predict" when and where adverse events are likely to occur, to things you might not expect like commercial entities selling huge private data pools to the police, courtesy of those toxic "Terms of Service" that are a mile long and which none of us read and likely would not understand without a law degree in any case.

This book was so inexpensive, it's worth it just for the initial chapters, to wake people up to just how much of our data the police have access too, even though it's typically not publicly disclosed in any formal or community-wide manner. Looking forward to the rest. The author pays a lot of attention to detail and is a good writer besides. Good book to add to any collection of works focused on policing and/or AI and how it's used (or abused).

This is typical American sociology: cloistered, siloed, boring. It safely repeats what we already know and makes no theoretical or methodological contributions. If you want to original, innovative and critical research on predictive or big data policing read "Digitize and Punish" by Brian Jordan Jefferson or "Pacifying the Homeland" by Brendan McQuade.
