In the United States and the West, many capable, intelligent, bighearted, resource-rich individuals and institutions are passionate about helping those in need. We give our time, talent, and resources to those in Haiti, Ethiopia, Mexico, and our own inner cities. We bring food, water, education, healthcare, security, technology, organization, hope, and faith.

What happens when it doesn't seem to work, or blows up? Sometimes we keep going. Often we start over, rinse and repeat. Tragically, it's easy to become disillusioned and quit.

Are we asking the right questions? Can we learn a better way? How can we make a lasting difference?

If these questions resonate with you like they do with me, read this book. Dr. Andrea Nelson Trice conducted research using personal interviews of those on the front lines throughout the world. She attacked the problem like Brené Brown, using subjective research techniques, while drawing on her personal experience, intuition, and passion to weave a path forward. Whatever you do, don't quit. And if you want your time, talent, and resources to make a lasting impact, read this book.

Dr. Andrea Trice's background, research, and thoughtful approach to the complexities involved make Stronger Together a helpful guide to building partnerships that last and to showcasing the idea that American and Majority World individuals each have something valuable to offer when they are willing to come together.

Over the years, Westerners have learned that helping vulnerable people around the world is more complex than it first seems. Using interviews with local leaders from numerous Global South countries, Trice gives practical insights about the kind of help that is truly valued. Worth the read!

What an incredible field guide for social entrepreneurs. A disciplined researcher, Dr. Trice conducted 90+ interviews with American and Majority World leaders to thoroughly develop and test her recommendations on how to create mutually beneficial cross-cultural partnerships. She doesn’t guess, blame or pick winners and losers among global stakeholders in development work; rather, she acknowledges that all partners bring unique assets and liabilities to the relationship, and that understanding these differences (including our shortcomings) can help us find a better balance in sharing power, showing honor, and in achieving short term goals vs. long-term human flourishing. Her many examples, data-driven observations, and first-person interviews (and her own life experiences) gave me confidence in her analysis, practical ways to engage, and ultimately, gave me hope. This should be required reading for all marketplace leaders and social entrepreneurs serious about working cross-culturally to create healthy, lasting change.

"Strong Together" by Andrea Nelson Trice is a compelling guidebook that explores the power of collaboration and partnership in achieving social impact. Trice delves into the principles and practices of effective collaboration, drawing on real-world examples and case studies to illustrate the transformative potential of collective action. The book emphasizes the importance of building trust, fostering inclusivity, and leveraging diverse perspectives to tackle complex social challenges.

What resonated with me most was Trice's emphasis on the role of empathy and humility in fostering meaningful partnerships, as well as her practical insights on navigating challenges and conflicts that arise in collaborative efforts. I would recommend "Strong Together" to anyone involved in social change initiatives, from nonprofit leaders and community organizers to policymakers and philanthropists, seeking to maximize their impact through strategic collaboration and collective action.

Authored by an insightful commentator on development work, this book delves into the intricate dynamics of cross-cultural engagement in the realm of social entrepreneurship. As a seasoned Development Practitioner, I found the text highly relevant, addressing the nuanced challenges and potential pitfalls often encountered in the pursuit of international development.

The book's exploration of the evolving landscape of American contributions to Majority World countries, transitioning from traditional philanthropy to social enterprise, resonated deeply with my professional experiences. It skillfully dissects the equation for success in social entrepreneurship, emphasizing the importance of not just innovation and technical skills but also a profound understanding of local cultures and power dynamics. The inclusion of real-world examples, especially the case study illustrating both strengths and failures, adds a practical dimension to the theoretical discussions.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to fellow Development Practitioners, policymakers, and anyone involved in or interested in the evolving dynamics of international development. It provides valuable insights into the need for a holistic approach that integrates cultural understanding and human dynamics into the fabric of social enterprise initiatives. The thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter further enrich the reader's engagement, making it a must-read for those seeking a deeper understanding of effective and sustainable global development practices.
