Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–4—In this debut from the cocreator of Dora the Explorer, carefree socialite Freddie Parrott attempts to solve mysteries and go on silly adventures, and luckily his faithful butler Peccary is there to save the day. Those looking for a more traditional mystery might be disappointed, as the cases don't usually have any clues to lead the reader to a deduction—the conclusion of the mystery is often just a joke. Who stole the waffle batter in "The Case of the Missing Waffle Batter?" Well…they tell you right away. And those looking for something funny might be equally disappointed; there's humor here, but it often gets weighed down by the prose, so younger readers might miss the joke entirely. There's certainly some wit and charm, which is enhanced by the pencil-heavy artwork, although there seems to be less artwork than in contemporary early chapter books. VERDICT For larger collections.—Peter Blenski

All 4 delightfully funny stories of Freddie and Peccary left me eager for more!

All 4 delightfully funny stories of Freddie and Peccary left me eager for more!
In THE FAMOUSLY FUNNY PARROT, four stories build on one another to root the reader in a world similar to Richard Scarry’s town of animals wheeling about in cars. But in these LOL stories we watch Freddie and his trusted butler, Peccary, knock into things causing a mess (mostly Freddie) that they then both have to fix (mostly Peccary). Together they solve the mystery of stolen waffle batter, why a door would knock too much, and try to avoid police officers who love to write Freddie up for everything his does. This dynamic duo will make a reader feel like they are wrapped up in a pair of snuggly slippers, tucked in, and ready to giggle over some silly bedtime stories.

I absolutely loved this book! My kids constantly ask me to read them a chapter, and I’m happy to oblige. So well written, so funny, and enriching for my kids. Can’t recommend it more

This is one of the funniest books for children in years. Very entertaining for an adult to read to a younger child, and for pre-teens to read on their own. Much of the humor comes from the relationship between a parrot name Freddie Parrott and his butler Peccary, who always finds a way out of every scrape that the parrot can devise. As he tells his own story, Freddie uses some unusual but useful words that some children might not know yet -- so it's a great vocabulary builder. As the reviews said, The Famously Funny Parrott calls to mind elements of The Window in the Willows and P.G. Wodehouse. But it's got a fresh style of its own. The whimsical storytelling and illustrations make a very fun read.

Children love a bumbling fool (think, for example, of Amelia Bedelia or Juny B. Jones, both always stumbling into trouble because they don't know as much as they think they do.) What could be better than a character in need of knowledge you possess? Not much, as is made clear in this story of a super-rich, bird-brained bird who can't figure anything out without the assistance of his long-suffering butler. Zany antics ensue. Leave time for giggles.

The author, a co-creator of Dora the Explorer, knows what kids like. There are four stories, each with lots of words, few pictures and a vintage feel A new one each night at bedtime might be just the thing to send your youngster to bed smiling.

I was provided with a free copy of this delightful book by Netgalley and the publisher. My honest opinions are my own.

It's shades of Jeeves and Wooster in these four silly tales of a bird-brained parrot and his wise butler, Peccary. There's a quaint old-fashioned feel to these stories that's reminiscent of slapstick silent movies.

Here we meet a door that tells knock-knock jokes, go for an eventful motor trip, and taste the world's worst waffle batter. This appears to be a chapter book for kids, though the stories are long, with some pretty advanced vocab words.

And, there are some wonderful illustrations by Brian Biggs.

I'm not sure of the intended age group, but I hope it gets read by many so that there will be plenty of famously funny further adventures.

Thanks to NetGalley and Delacorte Press for sharing.

I read one story to my kids (3-8) each night and they absolutely loved it. They were so entertained and each story has a great message. Did one story a night and finished in a week and now they want more... Will be rereading this until there are more more Freddie stories to share
