Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

When Brother Bear gets a brand-new bike, he's all set to ride it-that is, after Papa Bear shows him the rules of the road.

About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.  After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt.  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears."

Stan and Jan planned all of their books together. They both wrote the stories and created the pictures.  They continued to live outside of Philadelphia in the country.  There are now over 300 Berenstain Bears books.

This book was one if my son’s favorites. I just bought it for a great niece. Fifty years later it’s still a great book.

"The Bike Lesson" is one of my favorite Berenstain Bears stories from my childhood. Not to say that some of the more modern stories from the 1980s to the present aren't good. They are, but the stories that were written & illustrated from the 1960s and 1970s were (are still are) the best & funniest. Always like the morals & life lessons in these books. My family and I still laugh at their antics (especially with Papa Bear). LOL.

We use to read this book to our own kids and of course got rid of things like that many years ago. While reading other things to the grandkids I remembered one line from this book and started saying it to them which they have since memorized..."Not yet not yet not yet my son. First come the lessons, then the fun. How to get on is lesson one" I then went in search of it and found it on Amazon. It's my favorite book to read to them and they all know that and ask for it every time they are at my house and go down for naps or nighttime. It's just fun!

This is a good story about a son who just wants to ride his bike, but the father wants to give him about 7 lessons that all go terribly wrong. Finally the battered father gives in, and the son rides them both home on the bike to the welcoming and knowing smile of his mother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Classic Story!

My mom used to read this book to me and I wanted it for my daughter. Turns out this is the UK version and they drive on the left hand side of the road in the one section. It was comical to see they made this change from the North American version.

Possibly too much. At one point he wanted us to read the story several times a day and I warned him he was ruining my childhood. Thankfully he likes a little more variety now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dad gets it wrong again
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 28, 2014
My children loved Papa bear getting it all so wrong and now they are grown up "see - this is what you should not do!" is a catch phrase at home. My young nephew and granddaughter are now enjoying the story. Easy for adults to read many times, (necessary as children like the same story over & over), as the books are amusing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious reading; don't miss it; it will remind you of someone you know

This book reminds me so much of my late father and me when I was a little kid, although I did not know the book until I was an adult. I remember my father somehow thought I couldn't do anything right and had to be shown or explained to at great length. Then he would break something in the process but never ever admit that he had made a mistake. Nowadays when I read this aloud to children I can hardly keep a straight face; it's hilarious!
