Poetic meditations about Olson’s cabin and his life there.

Poetic meditations about Olson’s cabin and his life there, now available in paper for the first time.

Many people have a special place where they go to experience nature. Perhaps it is a cabin, or a campsite, or a favorite hiking trail. For Sigurd Olson it was a bare glaciated spit of rock in the magnificent Quetico-Superior country of northern Minnesota. He called it his Listening Point, and it is at the center of his book of the same name.

Listening Point is Olson’s second book, with over 40,000 copies sold in hardcover. Strikingly illustrated with drawings by Francis Lee Jaques, this book tells the story of Olson’s Listening Point from his first night sleeping there under the stars to the eventual building of a cabin. “From this one place I would explore the entire north and all life, including my own,” he writes. “For me it would be a listening-post from which I might even hear the music of the spheres.”

Through deeply personal stories, Olson brings life in the woods alive. He traces the history of a fallen leaf, explains the power of a canoe paddle cutting through the water, and the magic of listening to the rain pour on his tent flaps.

“Listening Point is dedicated to recapturing this almost forgotten sense of wonder and learning from rocks and trees and all the life that is found there, truths that can encompass all,” he writes. “Through a vein of rose quartz at its tip can be read the geological history of the planet, from an old pine stump the ecological succession of the plant kingdom, from an Indian legend the story of the dreams of all mankind.”

Considered by some to contain Olson’s most vivid and moving passages, Listening Point is the nature lover’s companion for hearing the depth and beauty of the great outdoors.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Listening Point is about the spiritual human connection to the environment. "Each time I have gone there I have found something new which has opened up great realms of thought and interest", Sigurd F. Olson writes. "For me it has been a point of discovery and, like all such places of departure, has assumed meaning far beyond the ordinary". Considered by some to contain Olson's most vivid and moving passages, Listening Point is the nature lover's companion for hearing the depth and beauty of the great outdoors.

This is a great collection of short stories/remembrances by a legendary environmentalist and one of the founders of the Boundary Waters and Alaskan Nation Wildlife. Great for solo reading or reading out loud around a camp fire with family or friends. If you like the wilderness get it.

What vivid, inspiring, and often allegorical writing by Olson of this now lost, quiet place in North America. One of Olson’s best, and not to be missed by any true woodsman & voyager.

Sigurd Olson made an incredible impact on the preservation of our natural resources. His love of wild places, river ways and lakes, the land, flora and fauna inspired him to write about his passion and strive to protect and preserve those very places he loved. "Listening Point" introduced me to Sigurd Olson and my life as a naturalist/preservationist and conservationist. Olson stated it best in this inspiring book:
“Though the point was only a small point of the vastness reaching far to the arctic from it I could survey the whole. While it would be mine for only a short time this glaciated shore with its twisted trees and caribou moss would grow into my life and into the lives of all who shared it with me...
I named this place Listening Point because only when one comes to listen, only when one is aware and still, can things be seen and heard.
Everyone has a listening point somewhere. It does not have to be in the north or close to wilderness, but some place of quiet where the universe can be contemplated in awe… The adventures that have been mine can be known by anyone.”
Sigurd Olson is a voice from the past, but his voice is an integral part of the future. This book will not only help anyone who reads it "to listen". but also to see and hear and understand why taking care of our wild and beautiful country anywhere is important.

I will be returning to purchase more Sigurd Olson books. They are outstanding.
Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2019
In this second book, Olsen accurately explains the greater roles of various natural elements within the shared ecosystem. It seems he has done more research for this than in Singing Wilderness, which is displayed in richer chapters, but lost in the organic feeling that was so well captured in his first book. For this reason some parts feel contrived but Olsen still rocks and I love the peacefulness of his writing.
