Razor-sharp and spellbindingly told, Bluff takes us deep inside the fraught and fascinating world of a modern magician who becomes obsessed with magic's dark twinthe underworld of the cardsharp.

"Hopelessly addictive." ―Megan Abbott, Edgar Award-winning author of
You Will Know Me

"If you haven't read Kardos yet, Bluff is the perfect place to start!" ―Lisa Scottoline, bestselling author of Exposed

At twenty-seven, magician Natalie Webb is already a has-been. A card-trick prodigy, she took first place at the World of Magic competition at eighteen and has never again reached such heights. Shunned by the magic world after a disastrous liaison with an older magician, she now lives alone in a New Jersey apartment with her pigeons and a pile of overdue bills. In a desperate ploy for extra cash, she follows up on an old offer to write for a glossy magazine and pitches the editor a seductive topic: the art of cheating at cards.

But when Natalie meets the perfect subject for her piece―a poker cheat who dazzles at sleight of hand―what begins as a journalistic gamble soon becomes a test of everything she thinks she knows about her talent, and herself. Natalie soon finds herself facing a dangerous proposition that could radically alter her fortune―to help pull off a $1.5 million magic trick that, if done successfully, no one will ever suspect happened. With Kardos raising the stakes chapter after chapter,
Bluff is a breathtaking work of suspense from a writer at the top of his game.

Mysterious Book Report No. 346 - John Dwaine McKenna
Mysterious Book Report No. 346by John Dwaine McKennaBluff is a novel about the practice of sleight of hand, or magic, and magic is done by practicing the art of misdirection. The conjurer talks the audience into looking over there while at the exact same time doing something over here and presto . . . a deck of fifty-two cards thrown against the wall falls to the floor . . . except for one. That’s the one a volunteer picked from the deck and showed the audience a few moments earlier then inserted back in the deck. That particular card is thumb tacked to the wall. Face out. The mind won’t accept—can’t believe—what the eyes have seen. That’s magic. It’s fun and entertaining. It takes tens of thousands of repetitions to become an adept . . . before the hand can fool the eye and the brain. But magic has a sinister side too, an evil twin called card manipulation. It’s used to cheat at games of chance.Bluff, (Mysterious Press/Grove Atlantic, $26.00, 272 pages, ISBN 978-0-8021-2804-1) by Michael Kardos features a down on her luck, broke magician named Natalie Webb. She’s twenty-seven years old, a card-trick prodigy, and a has-been who was used and thrown away by an unscrupulous older magician. He slept with her, stole her best trick and claimed it as his own . . . then revealed to her: “It’s common knowledge that I’m married.” Natalie was just eighteen at the time, attending her first World of Magic Convention . . . and she’s been shunned by the community of professional magicians ever since. As she struggles to make a subsistence living at her craft, a card trick ends in disaster, injuring and possibly blinding an aggressive personal injury lawyer. He’s described as a “Professional A--hole,” nicknamed Lucifer by his peers because of his willingness to resort to any tactic, no matter how low or vile, in order to win his case. Faced with thousands of dollars in legal fees, and the potential of many more in settlement costs, the beleaguered young woman takes on a writing project for a national magazine in which she will reveal some magic tricks, (A serious infraction amongst the fraternity of magicians), and compare them to an adept card cheat at the poker table. First however, Natalie has to find a poker-playing cheater . . . which leads her to Atlantic City . . . which in turn introduces her . . . Sorry folks. You’ll have to read this killer of a thriller to get the answer to that, and other questions, such as what is a classic pass, a Greek deal, or a Charlie Miller table pass. Bluff combines the elements of revenge, street justice, and gut-wrenching suspense to create a racy spellbinder of a novel that you can’t put down, can’t stop reading, and just can’t figure out until the very twisted end. And hey! Don’t forget that the art of magic is the practice of misdirection!

This book would be great for anyone interested in magicians, poker playing, or crime caper stories. I found it very original, certainly a refreshing change. Well written.

Very good book. Liked the explanations of the gambling techniques. The ending was unexpected. Would highly recommend this book and author

I enjoyed this book immensely. It has terrific pacing and a depth to the writing that is lacking in many "thriller" style books. I cared about the characters, especially Natalie. When I got to Part Three I thought, "Ok, here we go." I read with sweaty palms and a racing heart. Truly thrilling, and SO much fun! I hope for a Netflix series, which would be a guaranteed hit!!!!

In many ways, this book is like a magic trick, in that the payoff and conclusion relies on a big lie. The problem, however, is in the manner which this lie is implemented.
I have a real issue when the author takes liberties with how honest the protagonist's thoughts are. Let me explain what I mean. As a reader, I can only assume that the protagonist's thoughts, as laid out in text, is an accurate and honest representation of the actual thoughts of said protagonist. If, as the author, I write in the guise of the protagonist "I loves apples" for an entire chapter, it is awfully disingenuous if the final chapter, the protagonist claims "I never liked apples." I've seen this ploy used a lot in books that rely on a "con" or a "twist" at the end, however it's just not satisfying, because the reader has to assume that the thoughts of the protagonist are not false.
The twist, which I will not spoil, also relies on a plot hole which is never explained.
The readability of this book is top notch, it's a thrill-ride, but the payoff feels cheap.

I purchased this book with some skepticism. I was doubtful that magic and cards, two related and very visual skills, could be made interesting in print. Sometimes Mr. Kardos's attempts to explain illusions without giving away secrets are more technical than interesting, but he drove home a couple of points to me. Magic is not just a matter of "knowing the secret trick" It takes a lot of work, and some of the skills are almost athletic. Also, anyone who plays poker with anyone they don't know, is only asking for it.
I was also interested in seeing how a man writes from a woman's point of view. In writing a book this way I've learned a lot from women critics who have shown me I have no idea how a woman thinks. I see Kardos has been criticized for this and I feel good about noticing things like: Women would not say to each other "Because you are a woman too," They wouldn't feel they have to remind themselves. Women would not describe appearances, clothes, hairstyles, the way Kardos does . But only women will notice these things.
Oops, did I say "only women?"

I hadn’t heard of this author, and it’s my loss. Heist and con thrillers are my favorite genres. Bluff is the most tightly-plotted con I’ve read in decades. The characters feel real and the action is brutally plausible. This book demands to be a major motion picture. Pure delight!

I loved this book. I admit I was skeptical about a man writing from a woman's point of view, but I think Michael Kardos got it spot on. The characters are well rounded, so you truly care about them, and the plot never slows down, with twists you won't see coming right to the very end. Also, a big must for me, the prose are beautiful, with paragraphs that make me stop and read again just for the joy of a well rounded phrase and perfectly chosen word. I can't wait to see this made into a movie!

Another great story...a must read for amateur magicians as well as poker players...slowly but surely the tension mounts as the misdirections lead to a shocking final trick on the reader.

I thought about whether to give this 4 stars or 5, but overall, this was a very enjoyable book. I was afraid the ending would be too predictable or not satisfying. But although there were a few twists that you could see coming, it was still exciting enough.
